The yelling could be heard outside the hall, and surprisingly it was Asami who was louder. Things went deathly quiet for a moment, then she stormed out of her father’s study, slamming the door behind her.
She was just so angry that she was shaking. Her make-up was running, and she was so uncomposed that it just made her feel more vulnerable. She didn’t want Korra to see her like this. She rushed for her room.
Unfortunately for Asami, Korra was home and not the kind of person to ignore it when shouting was going down. She couldn't exactly make out their words, but it didn't sound friendly at all. So when Asami quit the room and rushed down the hallway, Korra chased after her.
In her dream world, they were currently inseparable. It was a nice change, there, and she was getting used to it here, too. Asami had seen her at some of her worst, and she didn't care what her girlfriend looked like. She caught Asami's elbow and pulled her into a hug, "Hey... it's okay. Whatever it is."
At first Asami resisted, but that lasted all of two seconds before she wrapped her arms around Korra and glomped into her with an audible foomp. Korra's presence was comforting, protective and safe, and all three were things that Asami really liked. Not that she talked about it much. She was supposed to be independent and strong.
But safe. She liked safe.
Gradually, she stopped shaking, and her tears dried. "Dad thinks you should leave."
"WHAT!?" Korra shouted. Her voice echoed down the hallway and her eye twitched a bit. This wasn't the time to make a scene, though her gut instinct was to do just that. She stomped one of her feet against the floor, and for a moment the ground shook underneath them, "Sorry. Sorry. OKay. I'm not going to earthbend your house apart, I promise. But is it because of the... bending?"
“I don’t think so.” Asami hugged onto Korra more tightly. “Honestly, running into your arms like this probably just confirms his suspicions.” She lifted her head to look at Korra. She knew she looked messed up, which she hated. Even Korra seeing her like this was a pretty bad day.
“He thinks I should find a nice man to settle down with, and stop this fling.” Asami stuck her tongue out. “If I wasn’t sure he’s been embezzling I’d have yelled louder.”
Even with mascara running down her cheeks, Asami was gorgeous. Korra would never think otherwise; Seeing her like this hurt only because Asami was obviously in a lot of emotional distress.
She was counting to ten in her head to calm herself down, which was probably a good thing because she almost set the hallway carpet on fire with her feet as Asami kept talking. But she needed to be the rock right now, it was Asami that needed someone to lean on, and she continued to force herself to remain calm. Her hands rubbed at Asami's back, "It's not a fling. He's going to have to deal with that eventually... but come on. Let's go talk in your room. And then I guess I'll have to go start packing."
Normally she'd fight. But this wasn't the time. She didn't want to make a bad situation worse.
“I don’t want you to go.” Asami let Korra lead her to her room. The thought of having the Avatar out of reach distressed her in ways she didn’t understand. “But maybe for a little while. A few weeks maybe while I sort this out.” She decided not to tell Korra about some of her father’s threats, not unless Korra pried enough anyway. Asami had problems where she couldn’t quite keep things from her girlfriend.
"I know you don't, and I don't want to. But like... your dad, he's just going to keep being a dick." Korra replied, with a sigh. She lead Asami off to her bedroom, and shut the door. Then she metalbent the lock so that it couldn't be opened from the other side. That would give them some time to talk, at least.
Hugging her arms, Asami leaned against the wall. “We’ll fix this, I guess. It’s just going to be hard.” Korra was managing to reassure her without even trying. Hell, if she’d been Mako he’d probably have broken up with her over this. The thought made her snort. “Maybe I’ll just get my own place.”
"Hey, we've lived through worse. Right? Somewhere. The civil war stuff was hard, but it got better. And the stuff with your dad, that sucked the first time around, too. I thought you and Mako were never going to forgive me." Korra was trying her best to sound encouraging. That was actually something she was pretty decent at. Being the brige and the mediator helped, she supposed.
"You could get your own place, sure! I can... ask Astrid if Naga can stay with Stormfly and Toothless for a while until we get it all settled, and go back to Tenzin. he's KIND of been missing me, so it might be okay. We'll make it work, Asami."
"I forgave you pretty early on," Asami admitted. She ran her fingers through her hair, messing up the usually perfect strands and waves. That seemed like a good idea, though. Astrid was a friend of Korra's and Asami honestly needed to get out and make more friends too. Naga would enjoy making friends with dragons.
She sighed, and nodded. "Okay. You're right. It'll be fine. I'll try to navigate this minefield and do some condo shopping. I need to..." She trailed off and shook her head. "It's stupid but I'm scared my father will... block my access to money or something. I know it's just money but I don't know what I'd do with myself if I didn't have the research division or something. So I have to be careful.”
“I don’t think that’s stupid! It’s not like you’re just some spoiled rich girl who can’t make it out in the world. Your company is everything to you, and you’ve worked so hard to get it where it is. You’d go crazy without being able to keep working, and that’s… it’s basically your livelihood. I don’t think you’d know what to do with yourself if you didn’t have that.” Korra put a hand on Asami’s shoulder and squeezed it.
“So here’s the plan. I’ll go quietly, alright? If I leave quietly it’ll make you look better. Then you can toe the line for a little while, maybe while you work with that lawyer. And it’ll… work itself out.”
"It's just a company. You're my friend. You're the Avatar." And both things were important to her. But Korra was right, the company was important to her. She just felt like there was something out of balance with the company and how it approached the world.
"Do you really think I can handle it? If I do a hostile take-over or prove my dad is doing something illegal?" She really hoped it wasn't the latter. It had nearly destroyed the company and destroyed her. There was a lot behind the scenes she'd only told Korra the surface details about. Nearly losing the company, the mess with Varrick, dragging Future Industries and her own reputation out of the gutter...She didn't look forward to doing the same thing in this world.
"I'm more than your friend, and sure I'm the Avatar. But being the Avatar means... nothing, really, right now. And you have to have that other stuff. I'm not the center of your universe and you wouldn't want me to be! I'm pretty sure you'd kill me if you didn't have anything else to distract you." Korra laughed at that last bit, but it was true. She was a handful, and she knew it.
As for Asami's ability to handle things, Korra just squeezed her shoulder again and nodded, "Hey, you're Asami Sato. You can handle it. You're a PRO at handling things. Way more than I am even!"
“I probably would throttle you,” Asami agreed. She lifted her hands to Korra’s waist and held them there. “I can handle it.” She breathed the words. “I can handle it. I’m terrified, but I can handle it. Just tell me I’m wrong, Korra? About my dad? What if I’m wrong??”
"Well..." Korra wasn't sure she could say that. She didn't really know Hiroshi very well, not in either place, "I don't know if you're wrong. I don't know if you're right. I mean, we've only known each other a few months now, Asami. But... this is what I do know. We love each other, and your father doesn't like that idea at all. So even if that's all we have to deal with - and I wish it was, I really do - then we still have to at least handle that."
She put her arms around Asami and hugged her, "And I hope you're wrong about the rest. Maybe it's all just a huge misunderstanding."
Suddenly, Asami wondered if they’d moved too fast. Korra was everything she’d ever wanted in a partner. They got along so well, boys hadn’t gotten between them, Korra made her feel safe. She spent a long time not feeling safe. Ever since she watched her mother die. No matter how much she fought or how well she did, she couldn’t ever shake that nagging feeling that she wasn’t actually safe.
“Maybe it is. I hope it is. But if it isn’t, I’ll be prepared.” She kissed Korra, just a quick peck. “What would I do without you?”
"You'd actually... probably be a lot more sane." Korra said, jokingly. The moment was far too intense, otherwise. Just like in their dream world, she felt like some of the things the world had just thrown at them were a little too heavy for people their age. Sure, they were just hitting adulthood, but it wasn't like either of them had their lives completely figured out yet.
Asami was running her own company in that other place, but that was stressful. It hadn't escaped her notice. And now it looked like things were heading that way, here. Korra couldn't even say she was dealing with anything nearly as important. Her own responsibilities hadn't exactly transferred over.
"Asami... I want you to know. You can count on me, alright? I'm here for you. You don't have to do any of this alone. Even if we're not in the same bed, or the same house or whatever."
Asami smiled at Korra. She was terrified of taking control of the company, but she was sure that she was going to have to. She barely kept Future Industries afloat how was she going to handle the much more complicated business world of the modern United States?
She squeezed Korra’s shoulders. “Thank you. That… means a lot to me.”
"I love you, you know." Korra reached up and cupped Asami's cheeks with her hands, "This might be our last night together for a while. They aren't going to break in here anytime soon. Let's just... curl up. We'll cuddle together for a little while and forget about everything else."
