Where: Beach
When: New Years Eve

Jem had never really done much for New Year’s Eve before. It was usually just another day since he’d never had anyone to kiss at midnight or anything, but this year was different. This year he had Will and Tessa and while he would have been content with staying in like they had on Christmas, the other two had expressed an interest in going out, so Jem had agreed. They had looked up various events going on in the area and had found that someone was having a bonfire on one of the beaches and since the snow had vanished and the temperature had gone back to what was normal for Orange County at the end of December, they had decided to check it out.
Will definitely thought they should go out for New Year, it was fun and they had been in a lot over the holidays. Not that it was a bad thing but New Year was the best time to go out. Not having anybody to kiss at midnight had never stopped him before, there was always somebody around. But this year he had two very special people to share it with. The bonfire had been a great find and as they walked along the sand the party already looked to be in full swing, music and laughter coming from around the fire. “This is going to be great” he said, squeezing both Tessa and Jem as they walked, he was in the middle of them with an arm around their waists.
Tessa’s previous New Years had always been quite subdued. She’d never been out to celebrate the changing of the year as her aunt had either had people come around for a low-key...recognition of the changing of the year. She wouldn’t have called it a celebration because it wasn’t a particularly joyful experience. Tessa’s aunt would have a few guests over and they would talk, eat and see in the New Year before parting ways and heading to bed after a brief toast. A beach party sounded incredibly unlike her and she liked the idea of that.
As Will squeezed her, she turned and smiled up at him. Wills enthusiasm and vigour was so contagious and she couldn’t help but be filled with confidence that tonight as going to be alright. “Have either of you ever done anything like this before?” she asked, looking across at Jem after looking at Will.
Jem shook his head in response to Tessa’s question, “I mean, I’ve been to a bonfire once or twice, but never on New Year’s Eve and I’ve never really enjoyed it.” It wasn’t that Jem hadn’t had any friends or anything to do things with back in England, but doing things like this had never really been his thing. Now though, it was a little different. Tessa and Will weren’t just his friends; they were more than that and it was different doing things with them than when he’d done them before, “Should we get something to drink or find a spot by the fire?” There was so much going on around them, that Jem wasn’t quite sure what to do first.
“Me either” Will replied, “I mean bonfires yes but not on the beach on New Year. Too bloody cold on the beaches in Wales” he grinned. He’d been to a lot of house parties though, Will had always been popular though he had never had anybody special to be with. “Why don’t you two get us a good spot and I go get us drinks?” he suggested.
Tessa laughed at Will’s comment on Wales, Great Britain’s reputation for cold weather was apparently not exaggerated all that much. “All right, but first umm, are we drinking drinking tonight? Or just drinking?” she asked. “Because if it’s the former then I’d like one of those alcho-pops but if the latter then I’d like a diet Coke,” she said, a hint of blush colouring her cheeks because she knew it wasn’t something they were supposed to be doing but it was quite tantalizing all the same.
“I don’t think a few drinks will hurt.” Jem said, surprising even himself a little bit. Sure, he’d drank a few times back home, but since moving to America he’d really only drank with his cousin on the nights that she’d convinced him to come out with her, “But we should definitely stop at a certain time to sober up enough to drive home. Or at least one of us should.” That person would probably be him, because Jem couldn’t see himself drinking to excess. "Alright. Tessa and I will find a good place for us to sit." He said in response to Will's offer to get drinks.
“Drinks are a necessity on New Years” Will declared, because being underage in the US sucked and if he could break the rules and get away with it then he would. He actually thought the rules shouldn’t count for him since he’d been born in the UK, he should have to follow their rules instead. “Great, I’ll come find you soon. Get a good spot, not too close and not too far” he instructed kissing them each before heading off.
Tessa smiled after he kissed her. “Ok,” she smiled as he kissed Jem then headed off. Taking Jem’s hand in hers, she started them heading off towards the bonfire. “Where should we go then? It looks like there’s a space over there by the fire,” she pointed with her other hand to a space big enough for the three of them. There was a picnic blanket in her bag for them and a couple of snacks, but she hadn’t thought to bring any drinks.
Jem was still getting used to being kissed by Will and he felt his cheeks flush slightly as he kissed him in front of so many other people although no one really seemed to be paying any attention to them. Once Will had gone off to get their drinks, Jem turned his attention to Tessa and squeezed her hand as they started scouting a location, "That seems like a good spot. I'll help you set out the blanket."
Will was trying to get them both used to kisses and hugs and all that kind of stuff. Will himself was very comfortable with it and wanted them all to reach the same level, especially if they were to move further at some point. He grabbed a selection of alcopops for them, smiling and nodding at others already gathered around before turning to find Jem and Tessa.
“Thanks,” Tessa smiled at Jem as they set to work laying out the blanket. It was a nice, big red tartan one that she had seen on sale and liked a lot, but she never thought she’d have reason to use. Until of course tonight was suggested. As she and Jem settled on the blanket, she looked around at the fellow partygoers and wondered if they might see anyone they would know. She glanced over at Jem as he made himself comfortable. She would love to be able to cuddle up to him or Will and lay her head on their chest, but she still felt quite reserved when it came to showing affection. Looking up, she saw Will heading back towards them with alcopops in his arms. He seemed to have adapted to their new situation far more easily than she or Jem had, but then she imagined he had more experience than either of them when it came to intimacy. Shuffling back, she made room for him at the front of the blanket near the fire. “So what did you manage to find for us then?” she asked him.
Jem had never been one for much physical contact either, but at some point on Christmas Eve, he'd fallen asleep with his head on Will's lap and when he'd woken later on, the feeling of Will's fingers in his hair, he'd found that he very much enjoyed the feeling of being close to another person and the fact that it was Will made it even better.
Once the blanket was set up, Jem sat, watching Tessa and was about to reach out and wrap his arm around her when Will returned with their refreshments, "I'm sure he got the very strongest there was, because his secret plan is to get us both drunk."
Joining them he flopped down on the rug in front of them both, handing over opened bottles and placing the closed ones behind the blanket, furthest from the fire so they wouldn’t overheat. “How dare you besmirch my good name with such insinuations?” he declared to Jem, “It is no secret that I plan on getting you both drunk, I admit it freely. I simply want to have my wicked way with you” he winked at them, “Or at least relax you enough to cuddle”
Tessa blushed furiously at the banter between the two of them. Dropping her chin, she tried to hide her embarrassment as she picked at bits on the blanket whilst they bantered. The boys seemed much more at ease with the idea of intimacy and teasing each other about it, but Tessa had always been a creature of control. The idea of letting herself be so...liberal whilst under the influence was almost frightening.
It wasn’t so much that Jem was comfortable with the idea of intimacy, because that still freaked him out just a little, but he was comfortable with teasing Will. It came so naturally to him that he couldn’t just waste it. Noticing what Tessa was doing, Jem reached out and placed a hand on her upper arm, gently, “Are you alright?”
Banter came as naturally to Will as breathing, especially so with Jem. He’d never do anything they were uncomfortable with and especially not if they were drunk, he did hope they knew him well enough to know that. Noticing Tessa’s quietness when Jem did he looked at her, waiting for a response to Jem’s question.
“Oh, I’m fine,” Tessa smiled at them both. “I just...this is my first real New Year’s party,” she admitted with a little smile. “And I’ve never been out with two boys before, I’m not really sure what to expect is all,” she gave a little nervous laugh and tucked some hair behind her ears.
Jem rubbed Tessa’s arm reassuringly, “This situation is new to all three of us, Tessa.” Will may have been more experienced than the both of them, but he doubted that the other Shadowhunter had ever been in a relationship with two people at the same time, “We’re all still learning how to act around each other now that we’ve moved past the friends spot.” He watched Tessa, hoping that what he was saying was helping her to relax a little.
Will nodded, “Jem’s right. Just relax, neither of us are going to make you do anything you know that right? We all need to just go with the flow since none of us have done this before” Because Jem was right in his assumption that Will had never dated two people at once, not like this.
“I know, I know,” Tessa replied with a smile, then took a deep breath and sighed, looking up at her two favourite boys. “I want you both to know something, come, sit closer,” she reached out and touched Will’s arm, encouraging him to scoot closer. She picked up the bottle that Will had brought for her and took a little swig. “Do you remember before when I told you that I’ve never made a resolution before?” she asked Will.
Jem slid closer to Tessa, his hand still on her arm as he watched her, wondering what she had to tell them, “Yes. I remember.” He held his own drink in his other hand, but had yet to take a sip, more interested in Tessa at the moment.
Will came closer too, the three of them huddled together. “I remember” he nodded, “Have you changed your mind?” he asked, watching her closely.
“Well it wasn’t so much as me changing my mind, more someone else who changed my outlook on the whole,” Tessa grinned at both of them. “I have decided this year to make a resolution,” she told them. “I resolve to love you both. Fiercely, sweetly and passionately. In all the ways written about in the books we love,” she looked at Will with a smile and then to Jem. “And the music we share.”
As Tessa spoke, a smile spread across Jem’s lips and he slid his hand down her arm until he could lace their fingers together, “I like the sound of that. I think that’s a resolution that I could certainly get behind.” Jem might have been new to being in a relationship with one person, let alone two, but with Will and Tessa, he had a feeling that they wouldn’t have too hard a time getting used to it.
Will linked his hand with Tessa and the other with Jem and nodded, “Count me in for that” he said with a grin at both of them.
