Jem frowned as he rolled over and cracked one eye open. It was still dark and Church was standing on the bed, in front of his face, swatting at him. “What do you want?” He asked, knowing that the cat wasn’t going to be able to tell him, but as he woke further he began to hear the sounds coming from the other room. From the front door. It sounded like someone was trying to get in. Glancing at Church, Jem slid out of bed and quickly moved towards where he kept the cane and seraph blades he’d gotten from the dreams. Grabbing one of the blades as well as the cane, he crept, silently out of his room, listening to what was going on at the front door. He could hear voices that did not belong to Will or Tessa or anyone else that he knew, which meant only one thing. Someone was trying to break in.
Moving towards Will’s room, he pushed the door open and entered, transferring his cane to his other hand so that he was holding it and the blade in one hand then reached out to shake Will’s shoulder, “Will, wake up. Someone is trying to break in.” He had a feeling that this had to do with the sudden spike in criminal behavior in the OC and he knew that Will would be upset if he didn’t wake him up for this.
Will had been having a rather nice dream involving Jem and Tessa when he was woken up by Jem, who looked far more concerned than he had in the dream. “What?” Will said, becoming alert immediately when Jem’s words sunk in. He grabbed a blade from under his pillow and then sat up. “They picked the wrong place” he said with a grin, “Let’s make them regret it”
Any other time Jem would have smirked at the sight of Will having just woken up, but this wasn’t any other time. He would admire the other man later, once they’d driven off the would be intruders. “Come on.” Moving towards the bedroom door, Jem listened to see if the people trying to get in had made any progress and when he heard the door open, he glanced back at Will and gestured towards the living room, not wanting to alert the intruders that anyone was awake.
Will would happily be admired later once these guys had been taught a lesson, he had no problem with that at all. Moving from the bed he followed Jem, grabbing another blade from the side to carry with him. Listening too he nodded in response to Jem, he understood.
"Quick, grab anything that looks like we can make some money off it." Jem heard one of the guys say as he listened for footsteps, trying to figure out how many people were in the apartment. A year ago he never would have thought to stand up to intruders like this, but that was before he became a Shadowhunter. The Runes on his body gave him abilities that he hadn't had before. Abilities to fight off people like the ones who were in the apartment.
Taking a deep breath, Jem stepped out of Will's room as he heard someone enter the hallway. The man at the other end of the hall seemed to stop head in his tracks as he spotted Jem then the dagger and blade in Jem's hands and for a moment it was as if they were having a stand off.
Will probably would have stood up to intruders, though it wouldn’t have ended well he was sure. But he was hot headed at times and this kind of thing outraged him. How dare people think they have a right to enter others’ homes?
A moment after Jem, Will stepped out behind him and saw the guy too. It seemed to be the catalyst to make the intruder move and he backed up calling for his friend.
When the guy called out to his partner Jem glanced back at Will briefly before going after the guy. So long as neither of them had guns, they should be able to take care of them easily enough. The guy had just turned around to actually look for his partner, when Jem caught up to him and kicked out at his shin. If it had been a demon, Jem could have actually used the blade or dagger, but he had to remind himself that this was a human. Sure, a human who had broke into their condo, but a human none the less.
Will meanwhile, after making sure Jem was alright, entered the living room just as the second intruder was coming to respond to the call of his mate. “Surprise” Will said before landing a well aimed kick to his stomach followed by a punch to the back of his head when he bent over. “You know it’s not nice to try and steal from nice people”
The intruder that Jem had kicked in the shin tried to throw a punch at Jem only to have Jem block it, “I don’t know what has gotten into people these days, but this was not the smartest thing you could have done.” Jem heard Will in the living room and smirked a little, recalling various fights they’d taken part in in the dreams. “Now, is it just the two of you?” Whether or not the guy would answer, that was completely up to him, but Jem figured he’d ask regardless.
Will was now standing behind his intruder, his guys arms behind his back with Will applying pressure. “Now, how about you be a good little thief and tell me who you are and how many places you’ve robbed lately?” he suggested.
While Will interrogated his intruder, Jem managed to drag his into the living room to join them, “I doubt they’re going to tell us anything, Will. However, they’ll probably tell the cops.” He dropped his intruder onto the floor, groaning, “I’ll give them a call.”
“If the cops arrest us then they’ll arrest you too for assault.” Will’s intruder managed to get out through the pain of his arm being twisted back behind him by Will.
“Assault?” Will said looking thoughtful, “No, no that’s not right. Self defence I think you’ll find, self defence against a man who tried to attack me in my own home while he was robbing it. It was all such a shock, adrenaline must have kicked in” he said with a wink over at Jem.
Jem nodded, "We were simply protecting our home, which you have broken in to." As Jem spoke, Church sauntered into the room and upon seeing the two intruders, he hissed at the one still on the floor and swatted at his face, "Church clearly feels the same way." He reached for the phone, "I think I'll be calling the police now."
“If the cat hates you then you’re screwed” Will told him cheerfully and nodded to Jem to call the police. The scumbags needed picking up before Will taught them a lesson of his own devising. Something they wouldn’t forget in a hurry.
Jem couldn’t help but chuckle slightly at Will’s comment about Church as he dialed 911. “Keep an eye on them,” He said to Will as he waited for the operator to pick up. Sure, he could multitask, but if one of them tried something, Will was the most likely to be able to go after them while Jem was on the phone. Once he was connected, Jem told the women what had happened and gave her their address.
“Of course” Will said as Jem made the call, considering how busy they must be it sounded like someone would be with them soon to take them into custody, they must have added extra staff during this crimewave. The two Will and Jem had caught became quiet once they realised the police were coming and they tried nothing further.
Surprisingly, it didn’t take long for the police to get there, considering the higher crime rate currently. Once the intruders were taken away and the police left, Jem was standing by the door, inspecting it, “We should be able to lock this tonight, but we’ll have to have someone come in and fix it.” Anyone else would probably look for a 24 hour locksmith or something to come fix it right away, but Will and Jem had already demonstrated that they were more than capable to defending themselves if someone tried to break in again.
Will nodded, “That sounds good. You should come and stay in my room, I don’t want you being alone in yours. Just in case” he said reaching for Jem’s hand with a smile. “And you know if this crimewave is going to carry on I was thinking maybe we should invite Tessa to stay with us? At least until things settle down again” he suggested.
Jem hadn’t expected the offer to spend the remainder of the night in Will’s room, but he wasn’t going to turn it down, “Alright.” He squeezed Will’s hand and allowed the other Shadowhunter to lead him to his bedroom once everything was locked and the lights were out, “And that’s probably a good idea about Tessa. Better she was here than alone.”
“Exactly” Will said, “I’d feel better if she was here where we could protect her. She could have one of our rooms and we can share or I can take the couch” In case he was presuming too much.
“I think that sounds doable.” There was the extra bedroom, but since there were currently only two of them living there, there wasn’t actually a bed in the third bedroom and making Tessa sleep on the floor was out of the question. “We can text her in the morning.”
