Who: Martha & Rose What: Hang Out! When: Dec 27th Where: Rose & John's Flat Rating: Low Status: Complete upon posting!
Rose was excited to have her first friend over to her new place. John was out at the university, per usual, so it left her at home, grounded. She had gone in for a few more training sat the airport but there wasn't much more she could do. They were hoping the snow would let up enough in the next couple days so they could begin training up in the skies; it was enough to make Rose hope for it and turn her stomach at the same time.
For now, she was fine around the house, keeping up with the tree and playing with Wolf. The little kitten had so much energy that Rose loved to watch him explore the flat, trying to the climb the tree or get up somewhere else that was equally as high. She still couldn't believe that John had gotten her the kitten for the holidays. She knew it didn't cost him much m, but the sentiment seemed like a lot. Then again, she had gotten him an annual Disneyland pass, but Gwen had helped out with that as well.
Rose set the kettle on to boil, placing a few different sandwiches on a plate and placing Martha's gift next to them. She smiled at her arrangement and sat down at the table, waiting for her friend to arrive.
Martha had known about Rose for a long time now. She’d known about her practically since her first dream when The Doctor would talk about her and it was obvious that he had wished she was there instead of Martha, but that had never deterred her; at least not too much. Sure, she’d left because she had fallen for him and knew that he would never be over Rose, but that didn’t change what she thought about Rose in real life. When Martha thought about it, Rose had actually had most things first. She’d dated Mickey first. Had traveled with The Doctor first, but those things happened all the time and the way Martha liked to think about, they could share.
With Mickey away on another job, right now, the thing they had to share was The Doctor. Martha had no idea if Rose had started dreaming yet, but even if she had, she likely wouldn’t have realized that John was their Doctor unless she’d dreamt about his regeneration into their Doctor. That was one thing Martha was planning on asking Rose when they got together that afternoon.
Roses’ gift was in her bag as she made her way up to the apartment and upon finding the right name, she pressed the buzzer.
Rose hurried over to the door, pressing the button to let Martha in. She opened the door and glanced out, smiling when she saw her friend come up the stairs. “Martha! Hi!” She hadn’t seen her in so long that it was good to see her face. “I’m so happy to see you! How have you been?” She embraced her friend, before ushering her inside to the warm flat. “Hope you’re hungry! Can I get you some tea?”
Upon hearing the buzzer, Martha pushed the door open and headed inside then up to Rose’s apartment, a smile spreading across her lips as she saw the blond in the hallway, “Couldn’t wait till I got to the door, huh? I’ve been good. How about you?” She asked, returning the hug. “And I’m definitely hungry. Tea sounds great.” She might not have actually been British in real life, but Martha had always enjoyed tea and now with her dream accent pretty much sticking, she thought it would just be strange if she denied tea.
“Course not! It’s been forever since I’ve seen you!” She closed the door behind them, practically bouncing into the kitchen to get them some tea. “I’ve been great! A little put out by the snow, but it seems that’s most of Orange County at the moment!” She pulled the kettle off the stove and filled her teapot with hot water. “How about you? Things been crazy at the hospital?” She brought everything out on a tray and set it down, pouring her guest a cup first. There was milk and sugar on the tray as well.
“When aren’t things crazy at the hospital?” Martha asked, smirking as she followed Rose into the kitchen and set her bag down on one of the chairs, “This looks great, Rose.” She said, referring to the lunch spread that the blond had set out on the table. “And if this is anything like last year, the snow should go away soon.” Martha still didn’t understand how it could snow in Orange County, but she wasn’t asking questions any longer.
“Please, have whatever you want!” Rose sat opposite of her friend, pouring milk and a little bit of sugar into her tea and mixing it. “A fair question though, but I’m guessing a little crazier than usual because we have some extra snow to add to the mix!” She could only imagine the extra intake of patients due to motor accidents, frostbite when people didn’t know better...It was enough to make Rose feel for her friend.
“How was your holiday? How’s the old Mickster?” She grinned, thinking how she hadn’t heard from him awhile.
Martha nodded in response to that, “Oh yeah. Between the car accidents and just, people who aren’t quite used to walking on ice or even holiday decorating accidents, we’ve definitely had more patients than usual.” Considering this was the third year in a row where they had randomly gotten snow in December, Martha would have thought that people would be used to this by now, but apparently now. “It was good. Low key since my family is in Boston and Mickey’s isn’t here either, but it was nice. And he’s good. Just left on another job, which sucks cause it feels like he just came back, but he’s gotta pay the bills.” Part of Martha hoped that Mickey would get another job that would keep him in Orange County so that he would start dreaming as well. “How was your holiday?”
“Yeah, enough to keep you busy!” Rose’s eyes grew large and she gave Martha a look over her teacup. “I’ll have to have a word with all these people! They’re the ones keeping you from hanging out with me.” She grinned, knowing how much work was more important than slagging off to be with friends, but she missed her; between her hospital routines and Mickey traveling, she didn’t see them all too often and she considered them her closest friends here! She made a mental note to stay in touch with them a little more.
“Sorry to hear! You know you can alway come around here when he’s gone and John and I can try to distract ya!” She grinned. “Just a thought.” She shrugged her shoulders, leaning back in her chair. “It was nice! John and I just stayed in and had a comfy Christmas. He tried to show me how to cook, but it didn’t end up so well.” She made a face. “But the flat is still standing and…” She heard a little meow at her feet and looked down to see Wolf. “And here’s the newest addition to the family!” She picked him up, setting him on the table. “Wolf, this is Martha! Martha, Wolf.” She beamed at him, an obvious proud mom.
“Yes, please talk to the masses and tell them the proper way to drive in snow,” Martha teased as she took a sip of her drink. When Rose mentioned John, Martha’s brow rose slightly, “Wait, who’s John?” Martha appeared to be very much out of the loop. Yes, she’d met The Doctor under the name John Smith, but since she mostly thought of him as The Doctor, she had a tendency to forget his name in the waking world despite the fact that he’d used the name in the dreams before.
When Rose lifted the cat up, Martha couldn’t help but smile as she reached her hand out towards the creature, “He’s adorable. I’ve thought about getting a pet too, but I spend so much time at the hospital that I don’t think it’d be fair to a cat.”
Rose laughed and nodded her head. “For you Martha, no problem! I’ll type up a flyer and pass it around town, yeah? I think that should solve the problem very nicely!” Rose took a drink of her tea and glanced at Martha when she asked about her flatmate. “John? Oh sorry! That’s my flatmate! This is actually his place and he had an extra bedroom! Lucky ‘cause I hated my old roommate. Did I ever tell you about him?” She rolled her eyes, not wanting to think about Edward. “Anyway, yeah, John’s my new flatmate and he’s brilliant! You’d really like him.” Rose was sure anyone who met John would instantly like him! She always convinced herself that was why the two of them got along so splendidly.
“Aw, you could definitely get a cat! Better a cat than a dog. Cats kind of just do their own thing while a dog needs a friend.” She scratched Wolf’s ears and watched as he tried to jump off the table. “We should go pet shopping for you sometime!” The thought made Rose grin at her friend. “C’mon, whattya say?”
“And post it on Valarnet. Seems like everyone is on there,” Martha laughed as she continued petting the cat until he decided he’d had enough and jumped down onto the floor, “Yeah, if I were going to get a pet it’d probably be a cat cause I just wouldn’t be home enough to properly take care of a dog.” Cat’s were a little more independant and didn’t need to be let out or walked like a dog. “Maybe. Maybe we could go by a shelter and get some info or look.” It would be nice to have a pet when Mickey wasn’t around; that was for sure.
“So, where did you meet this John? You’re sure he isn’t some wacko, right? And what’s his last name or is it just John, like Cher or Madonna?” Martha smirked and took a sip of her drink, “I think you may have mentioned your old roommate once or twice.”
Rose nodded her head in agreement. “Tell me about it! I feel like I’ve met and reconnected with so many people on there!” Ever since she had joined, she found herself with a much better life here in California, more so than she had before. She was finally living the life she had wanted with good friends and a good job.
“We’ll go sometime, just to take a peek,” she said, giving her friend a wink with another sip of tea. “You never know, something could just jump out at you and you’ll have to have it!” Rose knew that Martha probably got lonely while Mickey was away from home. She wanted to try and be there for her friend a little more than she had before and made a mental note to be in touch with her more often.
She smiled at her questions, knowing she was just being a good friend and looking out for her. “I met him on the network and he actually came to visit me at work! We really clicked and we’ve kind of just been together ever since.” She shrugged her shoulders as if it was no big deal. “Well, he’s a little off his rocker sometimes, but he’s a good guy. I think you’d like him! Oh, it’s Smith. John Smith.”
“That sounds like a good idea. I wouldn’t mind going to look,” Martha laughed at the thought of a cat just choosing her by jumping out at her.
At the mention of Rose’s roommates full name, Martha’s eyes widened slightly, “John Smith?” Martha knew only one John Smith, “From the network? Does he have hair that kind of…” She used her hands above her own head to demonstrate how the Doctor’s hair was, “And is he a teacher?” What would be the odds that Rose’s roommate was The Doctor. Not just the Doctor, but their Doctor.
Rose raised her eyebrows, surprised at the enthusiastic response Martha had to John. She couldn’t help but laugh when she moved her hands about to describe his hair. “Yeah, that’s him,” she said, setting down her cup. “You know him then? Isn’t he brilliant?” There may have been a dreamy sort of tone to her voice when she talked about him, but she barely noticed now. She knew what a great guy John was and wasn’t afraid to share it!
“How do you know him?”
Martha nodded, “Yeah, we met on Valarnet then a few weeks ago we ran into each other at a coffee shop near the hospital when I was on my way home.” Martha almost couldn’t believe that Rose and The Doctor were roommates. What were the odds of that happening? She supposed it was the same odds that had brought her and Mickey together. Either way, it was pretty crazy to think about, “So how long have you known him for?”
Rose couldn’t help but smile. “Seems he meets everyone in coffee places! Not that it surprises me, I think he always has a cup full!” Rose thought about how long she had actually known the Doctor and realized...was it really only that short of a time?” She looked at Martha, the surprise evident on her face. “Well...since the beginning of this month?” She made a face, wondering if Martha would judge her moving in with someone for knowing them such a short amount of time. She hadn’t actually realized how short it was; it just felt like they had known each other for a longer time! “Really, it feels much longer!”
“He definitely seems the type to constantly have a cup of tea or coffee.” Were it anyone else that Rose was living with, Martha might have said something about her moving in with them after such a short amount of time, but The Doctor wasn’t just anyone and even when he wasn’t exactly like he was in the dreams, he was close enough that she was sure that Rose was safe, “I know what you mean actually. I’ve only known him for a little while too, but it does feel like I’ve known him a lot longer.”
Rose smiled, happy to have gotten the blessing from one of her closest friends. “Right? It might just be his personality because he’s so friendly and outgoing, but I was just instantly drawn to him!” Rose couldn’t help but give her friend a dreamy smile, before shaking herself from it and standing up. “Right! I think it’s time for presents!” She grinned, walking into the kitchen. “I say we top off our tea and head into the living room to open them! You have to do it by the tree, don’t ya think?” She grinned. “You grab the presents, I’ll grab the tea.”
