There were strange sounds coming from the back lot when Tink pulled into the garage for work in the morning. Strange sounds like the crashing and tinkling of glass, muffled men’s voices, chuckling. She could hear footsteps on the gravelly parking lot. It sounded, in a couple words, not good.
Tink set down her helmet and backpack next to her bike, then came around the side of the building and let herself in through the fence, using her key to unlock it. “Hello? You’re not supposed to be here,” she called out.
Two thugs were breaking into the cars parked in the back lot and stealing whatever they could get their hands on. They had big packs filled with random things; car stereos, pocket change, clothes, odds and ends that people left in their cars.
The closest thug turned to Tink and drew a knife. “And who are you to stop us, Girly Girl?”
“I’m the mechanic opening the shop this morning, who just called the police.” Tink said, going quite red around her cheeks as she did her best to glare. Of course, only one of those things was true. Why didn’t she just call the police? Why’d she have to play the hero?
“You should leave now, Girly, before you get hurt.” The second Thug said, shouldering his bag.
“How about you two leave that stuff and get out before the cops get here?” Tink’s heart was thundering, but she was doing her best to turn her fear into anger. So far it was working. As her bright red cheeks would attest to.
The closer Thug came two steps over and grabbed Tink’s arm with his free hand. “How about you let us into the shop and open the cash register, hmm?”
Tink gave a yelp of shock and fear, and her wings popped out. She hadn’t meant to release them, it must have been fight or flight kicking in. Flight was going to win.
The closer Thug released her arm, gasping in surprise, then swung his arm up as if to block himself from an attack. The knife sliced through Tink’s wing like tissue paper, nearly severing the top half of her left wing.
Tink cried out, falling to the ground.
Both Thugs looked at each other in confusion. The second Thug called out to his friend, “What the actual fuck?”
Tink climbed back up and tried to flutter up into the air. Flight was trying to win. She was trying to get away now, though she knew she couldn’t fly like this. Not with all the pixie dust in the world. Panic was filling her as the Thugs turned their attention back to the fairy.
Haymitch hadn’t planned on visiting the garage that day but halfway to the office it had started making some strange noises so he had decided to call in at the first one he came to. He thought it a little strange that nobody seemed to have opened up yet, slowing down he turned off the engine and got out of the car. He was heading towards the front when he heard a woman’s voice cry out from the back and he went round quickly to see what was happening.
“Hey” he said as he saw two guys standing over a girl on the floor, he grabbed an iron bar lying on the ground and moved closer. “Back away from the girl”
Tink felt a deep gush of air escape her. Relief. There was someone here to save her. And, coincidentally, a siren started up not far from the garage. She knew it couldn’t be the cops--no one called them--but the arrival of Haymitch and the sound of the siren was definitely enough to spook the two thugs.
“Hey, man, we’re outta here,” one said. The two shouldered their bags, then took off across the parking lot and climbed back over the fence the way they came in. One of them snagged his pants on the top of the chain link, and there was a horrible ripping sound as he fell to the ground. But then a curse, and retreating footsteps.
Tink was breathing hard, shaking with fear and shock. She swallowed. Then she swallowed again. “..thank you, I… oh, God.” She turned to look over her shoulder at her wing. It was sliced near the top, with the top quarter hanging on by a thread.
Haymitch put the bar down and moved towards the young woman, “Are you alright? Did they hurt you?” he asked, eyes widening as he noticed the wings. Broken wings by the looks of it. The poor thing. “Can you stand? I think we should get you to a hospital” he told her softly as he knelt down beside her.
“No, I… I mean, he did, but… it’s not… it doesn’t hurt that bad…” Tink was so worried about never being able to fly again that everything else didn’t matter. Nothing mattered, really. She was starting to feel empty inside.
“Yeah.” She climbed to her feet feeling shakey and off-balance. A hospital? Sure. She felt a dull ache inside of her. Maybe they could fix it. Or maybe they’d put her in a lab and poke and prod at her wings for the rest of her life. “...They’re not going to lock me up Area 51 style, are they?”
Haymitch watched her carefully, offering his arm when she stood shakily. “I promise I won’t let them do that. We’ll find a nice doctor who won’t be phased by anything okay? And I’ll stay with you as long as you want me to” he added because he didn’t want her to think he would just abandon her at the hospital.
He helped her to his car and hoped it would make it to the hospital without breaking down.
He was very kind. Tink was grateful. Now she was just trying not to pass out from shock. Together they made their way to the car and she sat gingerly, very carefully pulling on her seatbelt. The closest hospital was only a ten minute drive away.
“Thanks, Haymitch.” She said, once they were on the road. Her voice was quivering and her face was pale. She remembered him from bringing his car into the shop. Actually, Tink remembered pretty much everyone who came in.
He smiled over at her, “You remember me” he said, “I’m impressed. Unless I made a bad impression and then I apologise” he said trying to get a smile from her. He drove carefully but quickly, noticing how pale she was. He thought she was probably in shock and hospital as soon as possible was the best place for her.
“No, you were nice. I was awkward.” Tink was being honest in her shock. The corner of her mouth twitched a little, as if wanting to smile. But she was still fighting to stay conscious. “I’m always awkward. It’s okay, I’ve grown used to it by now.”
“I wouldn’t worry, a lot of people feel awkward. If it’s any reassurance I didn’t think you were, I thought you knew your stuff” he told her, glancing over, “Try and stay with me okay?”
Tink actually chuckled at that though the edges of her vision were darkening. “I do know my stuff,” she said, as defiantly as a woman could in her current position. But she was teetering. “...I’m trying.” Hopefully she could hang on for the last couple blocks to the emergency room.
“No judgement here, I only just about know where to put water in my car” he told her, switching the air conditioning on a little more in an attempt to keep her awake. “Nearly there sweetheart” he told her and it was only a few minutes later that they were pulling into the hospital.
Tink’s eyes fluttered a little bit, and her head lolled. But the Hospital was in sight. She shifted, cleared her throat, and nodded. “I didn’t… I wasn’t expecting…” Finally they parked, and Tink reached to open her door. She climbed out of the car. “...I should have called the police.”
“It’s okay. I’ll look after everything, we just need to get you taken care of” he assured her, coming around to offer his support. Worried she wouldn’t make it into the hospital under her own steam. Once they got inside he looked around for someone and tapped the arm of the first nurse looking person he found.
“Can I help?” Nina asked, before her eyes widened when they fell on the young girl barely keeping herself upright. “Oh my goodness, bring her through here”
One of Tink’s wings was folded down and out of the way, but the other stuck out awkwardly. The top quarter was folded over, dangling, barely attached. She was leaning heavily on Haymitch as he moved her into the hospital, and then turned to look at Nina with something between fear and detachment. It was obvious she might pass out at any second.
“Thank you,” she said, and moved through the doorway into an examination room. Her hand clenched Haymitch’s arm. “...please don’t let them send me to a lab.” Now she was starting to babble. “I don’t want to be a government test. Please.”
Nina had noticed the wing straight away which was why she’d led her immediately to a private area. Haymitch practically carried her in, reassuring her as much as he could. “I’ll look after you I promise” he told her before helping her onto the bed.
“I need to examine you, is that okay? I’m going to give you a little injection to help take away some of the pain which might help clear your head a bit” Nina said as she prepared the painkiller.
Tink nodded, though she was still clinging to Haymitch’s arm so tightly that her knuckles were white. She relaxed a little after the shot, then a little more. She felt like she could sleep now, though she forced herself to stay away while the nurse examined her. Blood pressure, temperature, vitals, etc.
Then came the business about the wing. Tink lifted it a bit, and stretched out the other one so the could see how bad it was. “...I’m never going to fly again.” She finally said, one tear rolling down her cheek.
Haymitch didn’t mind, as long as it helped the small blond woman cope then he’d grin and bear it. In truth she wasn’t too strong really so it wasn’t too bad.
Nina worked quickly and efficiently keeping her patient and friend updated all the time about what she was doing. When it came to the wing she rested her hand on Tink’s shoulder. “Don’t you be too sure, this place is full of people who can do all kinds of things” she said reassuringly, “But in the meantime what we can do is strap it up securely so that no more damage comes to it. Is that okay?” she asked kindly.
Tink nodded. Though she was positive that it was hopeless. The only thing she’d ever heard of that would fix a broken wing was… Peri. Peri’s wings and Tink’s wings together would heal it. But Peri didn’t have her wings, and after the weirdness of Peri finding out she was actually Tink’s biological sister (omg, that sounded so much like All My Children or As the World Turns) she wasn’t sure where she and Peri stood, anyway.
She tucked her arms in her sleeves and very carefully, very gingerly, took her sweatshirt off. Then tucked her wings in as close as she could against her body so they could wrap her up. She’d have to try tape or glue or something. Stitches? Maybe she could find something that would work in this world.
“I’d be very careful, keep restrapping it for a while. When it isn’t so raw we can have you back in to assess it and see if there is anything we can do. I’ll set you up an appointment for a week or so” Nina told her, not willing to give up completely. “Now you can sleep when you get home if you have someone to watch you, but if not I’d like you to stay in with us. You’ve had a shock after all” Nina spoke slowly and clearly.
"No, there's no one at my place." Tink said. She pulled her cell phone out of her pocket and showed it to the both of them. "I might be able to find someone to take me home though. If I do, can I go?" Not that she didn’t like hospitals, but she just wanted to go home to her own bed to sleep. She felt so incredibly thankful for Haymitch, but didn't want to keep him any longer than was necessary.
“I can take you home” Haymitch told her with a shrug, “If you have a couch I can sit on I can stay and look out for you too. If you want” he added because he was practically a stranger, “I’ve got my laptop in the car and it doesn’t matter where I work from”
“You don’t have to do that,” Tink said to him, though she was smiling softly. She felt honored. “But thank you. I’ll send out some messages and find someone to relieve you.” Then Tink turned back to Nurse Nina. “Do I need to sign something to be released?”
Haymitch nodded, it made sense she’d rather a friend than him but he’d offered. He was an old fashioned guy at the end of the day.
“Yep, let’s get that taken care of” Nina said.
It didn’t take that long and before they knew it a wrapped up Tink and Haymitch were on their way to Tink’s house.
