Rose was beyond excited to meet Gwen face to face. They had had a few interactions online, and from what she could tell, Gwen seemed awesome. Not only did John talk highly of her, Rose seemed to get along with her fairly well too. They had finally found a time when the two of them could meet and Rose was eager to meet John’s old roommate. She wondered if it was weird, but pushed the thought aside as she strolled into the coffee shoppe they had agreed on. She couldn’t find any shoppe that offered Italian coffee, so she went with one she preferred above all the others. Not quite the same, but it would work for now.
She sat by the window, glancing out for the familiar face she had only seen on her computer screen. She hadn’t gotten her coffee yet, waiting to order when Gwen arrived. She noticed that she had begun bouncing her leg up and down and wondered why she suddenly felt so nervous. Nervous? Or anxious? She couldn’t actually tell but tried to think of something else. In truth, she was hoping to make friends with Gwen and make a good impression since John held her in such high regard.
She sighed and rested her forehead against the glass, telling herself to calm down. It was just a casual meeting like she had been prone to do these past few weeks. It was another person she finally got to meet face to face, hopefully the beginning of a new friendship!
Hey, Gwen was awesome. She was super excited to meet Rose, too. Rose’s internet presence was awesome, too, and Gwen was curious about this girl who she’d heard about from John. John didn’t often go chatting about girls and the like. So Gwen knew that something was up. It might have been slightly weird? But Gwen was used to weird. She’d lived in Orange County long enough that weird was normal.
Gwen stepped through the doorway and dusted the snow from her hat and sleeves. She was getting sick of this snow. It’d been cute at first, almost novel, but now it was getting a bit irritating. Though, it didn’t phase her too much, she had a new friend to meet. Her eyes moved around the cafe until she saw the other blonde. “...Rose?”
Rose turned at the sound of her name and smiled, standing up to greet Gwen. “Gwen! Hi!!” She eagerly opened her arms for a hug, pulling her in. It may have been their first visit face to face, but she already felt rather close to the girl; if it wasn’t due to their constant conversation online then it was definitely with all the talking John did about her.
“I’m so happy we could finally meet face to face! I almost feel wrong meeting you without John here...I think he’s your biggest fan!” She gave her a wink. “I’m sorry I didn’t know what to get you, but I’m happy to wait in line with ya!” Lucky for them it seemed to actually be a slower day at the cafe. Rose attributed it to the snowy weather outside; she knew she always felt a little lazier when she had to think about walking about in the powder.
Gwen laughed, but was more than willing to come on in for a hug. She felt like she knew Rose already, both from their interactions on Valarnet, and because of all she’d heard of the other blonde from John. Truth was, if Rose made John happy, Gwen was her number one fan.
“Me, too!” Gwen responded, grinning brightly. “Well, we’ll invite John next time. First time’s girl talk, so I hear.” Gwen was pretty protective of her friend, and she wanted to be absolutely positive about Rose. (Just slightly more positive than she was now.) “That’s okay! I’ll just… I’ll go for the mocha today. Fend off the cold. So, tell me… did you find new employment? I saw you were looking for work on Valarnet.”
Rose couldn’t help but grin at the thought of girl talk without John. To be honest, John was probably the one person she talked to the most! She told him everything, from what she did every day to her worries about what she was doing with her life. That seemed pretty girlie, but he never seemed to mind. Still, they would have to all get together another time. Rose wanted to meet the other girl that captured John’s attention and, hopefully begin a good friendship with her too!
“Yes! The network has been so amazing! I’ve been training to be an airline flight attendant with Baer airlines! With the recent snow we haven’t been able to do anything, so it’s mostly getting ready with practice and constant role play.” She put on what she now called her ‘flight attendant smile’ and recited some of the lines they were taught. “I’m sorry sir, I’ll need to ask you to turn your cell off until we’re at the proper altitude. What may I get you to drink today?” She laughed, shaking her head. “It will definitely be interesting to see what it’s really like once we’re up in the air!” She took a sip of her coffee and nodded her head at Gwen. “What about you? You work at Stark Industries, yeah?”
“That’s awesome. I’ve always wondered what it’d be like to fly around the world. You’ll have to take a ton of pictures wherever you go, and make sure to post them to social networks and stuff. So I can live vicariously through you.” Gwen said, beaming. She lifted her coffee for a sip.
“Yes, I work at Stark Industries. I worked for Mr. Jarvis before he left to head up the New York branch of the company. So I’ve sort of stepped into his shoes. I’m not sure exactly what my official title is, though.” Gwen would have to sort that out. “As far as daily operations go, I’m probably fifth in line after Tony and Pepper.”
“I’ll make sure to send you a lot of pictures along the way,” she said with a grin. “Although I don’t think any will be international. It work for Baer, a domestic airline. Still, I think it’ll be neat to travel around the U.S.! Kind of gives me a chance to check all states out as a tourist! Plus I’ll be, like, the exotic stewardess when we go to the south or something.” She giggled, copying Gwen and taking a sip of her own drink.
“Wow, that’s so cool Gwen! Nice that you worked hard enough to follow in your predecessor’s shoes! And it seems that you’re pretty high on top of that list! What is it that you do there?”
“I do a little bit of everything. Mostly I clean up after Tony, but.” Gwen grinned. “I’m still interested in where you’re going! You’ll have to take pictures in all of those cool landmarks across the United States. Like, the world’s largest ball of twine, and stuff like that.”
Rose laughed, shaking her head. “I really have no idea! Being grounded hasn’t been very fun, but I’m excited for when we can finally fly! I mean...I’ve thought of the precautions of flying, but I like the idea of being able to travel around, even if there aren’t many international flights! I’ll be sure to sign up for those though.” She grinned, thinking about it. “You will be the first person I send those pictures to! We could start a collection or something!” She was sure John would share in Gwen’s passion for strange and unusual things and made a mental note to be on the lookout at all times. “I feel like airports are the best places to find things like that too. Stuck at the airport? Here’s a giant ball of yarn!”
She moved her hands to be on either side of her drink, warming them. “Have you done a lot of travel? I wish I could do some more, more for pleasure than business now!”
“Good! You should do like… have you seen that film, Amelie? You should take pictures with a garden gnome or something. In front of all the amazing buildings and landmarks that you’ll get to see. There’s plenty of amazing things to see in this country. Mount Rushmore? Niagara Falls--well, half of it, anyway. The Golden Gate Bridge? The Saint Louis Arch? You can come up with all kinds of cool Americana pictures.” Gwen said, beaming. Then she laughed. “That would make airports so much more interesting, that’s for sure!”
Gwen shook her head. “Well, I grew up in New York, and I went to college in Palo Alto. Then back to Massachusetts for grad school, and here after that.”
Rose laughed with Gwen as she came up with the idea. “That’s brilliant! I wonder what I could use…” She thought for a moment and looked at Gwen to help come up with some ideas. “Not a garden gnome since that has been done then! I’ll just have to find a cute little stuffed animal or something, yeah?” She grinned, really liking the idea that she had come up with. “I can start a scrap book or something! I’ll need to start a list of all these places to visit!” The more Rose thought about it, the more she liked it.
“A lot of back and forth for you! Even amount of west coast and east coast too! Do you have preference after all that?”
“Maybe something to do with a rose?” Gwen suggested. Since the other’s name was Rose. “Maybe a stuffed animal holding a rose? And it’ll fit better in your suitcase than a gnome would, anyway. No chance of it getting broken or anything.” She beamed at the idea.
“I don’t know. Something keeps me here. Not just the excellent job--Mr. Jarvis offered to bring me with him to New York for pretty much the same pay as I’m getting here now--nor the boyfriend. I think Michael would follow me if I left. No, something makes me feel like I’m an Orange County resident now, and I don’t want to leave.” Gwen responded.
Rose laughed, nodding her head. “Something with a rose...I like it! Not too cliche?” She grinned, rather liking the idea more and more. Thankfully she didn’t think she would be going anywhere with big landmarks for her first flight so she had time to think of what to bring with her.
Rose tilted her head slightly at what Gwen said, thinking about it a bit. “You’ve grown roots here! You have friends which are like family, yeah?” She smiled, hoping she could make it to be considered a close friend of Gwen’s. She liked her energy and natural good humor. “And speaking of Michael, I’d still love to meet him! Whenever you guys are free that is.”
“Nah, not at all.” Gwen said, grinning. “I think you’ll find something perfect. Just keep an open eye and an open mind.”
And then Gwen nodded. “Yes. I have friends which are like family here, too.” She beamed brightly. “I’ve been here long enough. It even says California on my Driver’s License.” Which was a true sign that she’d taken up roots here in Orange County. “Sometime soon! I’ll let you know.”
“I’m beginning to know what you mean about having friends out here that are like family. It took me awhile to find a good connection, but the network is so great for meeting people! Have you been on there for some time?” Rose had never had a hard time making friends, but she never had a close friend that she would consider her best. Well, other than her cousin, but she was all the way back across the way. She was beginning to build and develop friendships over here that she had been hoping for ever since she had moved to California, all thanks to the Valarnet.
“A couple years now,” Gwen responded. She thought back to her first Dream, on Valentine’s Day two years ago. Had it really been two years? God. She laughed softly. “I’m becoming such the Californian now. Left my New England roots behind. I was in the Silicon Valley for Undergrad, and I got used to it. Grad School at MIT was impossible. The snow! Though I didn’t exactly escape it coming here, did I?”
Rose laughed, shaking her head. “That’s what I said as well when it started to snow! It was like a little bit of home came back with the winters here.” She grinned, hugging her cup close. “It’s nice enough though. It hasn’t gotten to the point where I’m completely sick of it. But I also haven’t slipped on my bum!” She grinned, giving Gwen a wink and taking a sip.
“Well, to us California girls!” she said, holding her cup out for a cheers. “I can’t wait for summer though! Trips to the beach and picnics!” She sighed, thinking about it. “And trips to Disneyland!”
Gwen laughed. She loved that Rose and John both talked somewhat the same. She’d missed things like ‘bum.’ She lifted her cup to clink against Rose’s. “Here’s to trips to Disneyland!”
