Tink knew that she was coming over to Peri’s house to help her go through some boxes that she got from her mother. Tink also knew that Peri had some wine for them to drink. She brought a spare set of clothes and a sleeping bag, just in case she got too tipsy to head home. It was a huge backpack on her back. She was looking forward to getting it off so she could let her wings loose.
She knocked on the front door and waited, grinning softly, for her sister to answer the door. They could talk about the dreams now! Finally!
There were a lot more boxes that Peri had gone through when the move was actually happening. It just went by so quickly that there wasn't enough time for anything else. She couldn't talk her mother out of moving in a day. A little more warning would have been nice. Still it didn't stop her mother from moving out of the Orange County home. She wasn't even sure that her father was on the same page about the move.
With the limited time table to get through the boxes she was fine with bring a few of them home with her. Just to make sure that nothing important was lost to the trash.
There was about four boxes that she thought would have some importance in them. They were sitting along side the coffee table that was already ready with a bottle of wine and two wine glasses on it.
As soon as the door knocked she walked over. "Hey Tink," she said with a smile. "Come on in."
Tink came into the apartment and shed her backpack. “Hey.” She responded, wearing a bright grin. Then she reached forward for a quick hug. The girls had grown close since the time they hung out near Halloween, even though Tink hadn’t been able to tell her about the Dreams or anything until now.
Once she was safely inside the apartment, she gave her shoulder a little shake and her wings popped out from slits in the back of her clothes. It felt good to let them out. “Ready to get to work?”
The younger blonde returned the embrace from the other. It was nice to have someone over. She didn't really have many. It was mostly because she didn't want too many people finding out that she still didn't have an apartment. It had only been a couple of months since she just returned to Orange County.
At the sight of the wings the younger woman's eyes beamed. It was so nice to see them in the real world. She missed them from the dreams and wondered when/if she would get them here.
"More like ready to drink," she said with a laugh.
Tink laughed, too. “Pour up, then. Let’s get this party started.” Tink didn’t really care about where Peri lived or what she was up to. Just that she was here. And she was Tink’s sister. Okay, not really. But they were Dream siblings, so they had that? At least, it was a start.
Or, had Peri dreamed that far? Now they had to talk about that. Well, not now, but at some point tonight. Wine first.
There was a thought of the dreams as Tink spoke. Peri wondered if she should mention anything about the dreams. Especially since she had dreamt that they were twin sisters. She just wasn't sure if Tink had similar dreams.
Oh yes, it was definitely time to drink.
She walked over to the coffee table and sat on the floor. "Yeah, let's," she said with a little bit of a laugh in her voice.
Without a second thought she opened the first wine bottle and started to pour. Of course it was Tink’s glass first and then her own. “Everything is basically old pictures and letters. My mom said I could keep anything if I wanted.” She was hoping to find some of her old baby pictures. They weren’t in any of the photo albums that she had taken home. It was mostly one’s that were done by her grandmother when her mom was growing up. She just figured there was never time for their own because of their careers.
Tink sort of fluttered over to sit down next to her sister on the floor. Then she accepted the wine glass and sipped. “Well, let’s start then?” Tink suggested. “I’ll just sort by official looking documents, letters, and photos. You can go through them all and know what you’re getting yourself into.” She sipped again, then set the glass aside.
"It sounds like a plan," she said with a smile. "Also if you find anything naughty please don't show me." It was a little joke she added at the end. She was pretty sure that there were no naughty photos in the boxes.
She took a sip of the wine she had poured herself.
After setting down the glass she reached for one of the boxes and pulled it close to them. "I think this one is mostly letters," she couldn't remember what she had stuffed in there was she was getting the boxes to take to her house.
Tink laughed out loud, then clapped a hand over her mouth. “Sorry.” She said, sheepishly. “Okay, I promise. If I find anything naughty, I’ll keep it to myself.” She reached for one box, and started to pull paperwork and photos out of it. She could sort through. It was all people she didn’kt now, though, so the novelty wore off pretty quick.
That reaction caused the younger blonde to laugh out as well. "Good," she said with a shake as she wasn't wanting to visualize that. Even though she was the one that had brought it up.
"So wings," she said as she was flipping through a sack of letters. She was excited to know when she would get some wings.
“Wings!” Tink said, and gave hers a little flutter. A few specks of pixie dust fell down off of them as they moved through the air. She was grinning brightly. A very Tinkerbell grin. “I’ve had mine for a few months. Gosh, a little longer than that. Just woke up one morning and they were there. They’re really easy to hide under clothes, though.” She spoke as she sorted, putting photos onto the photo pile.
That didn't exactly tell her when she was going to get wings. "So no warning?" she said sounding a little disappointed. She was hoping that she would get a feeling or something that way she could prepare.
She wanted to reach out and touch them. That might be a little too personal.
"She really kept a lot of old letters," and not nearly enough pictures.
Tink sighed softly. “I’m sorry. I wish I could tell you. But I can’t imagine that you’ll wait too long for yours.” Tink was confident that Peri was going to get hers.
“Yeah, I see. Some of these photos are really really old.” Tink said. “Actually, look. Here’s a big batch from… the year I was born.” She held up some photos. There was a little baby in some of them. It was cute.
"I always miss them when I wake," she said actually talking about the dreams. It was like she was missing a part of her. Even after just the first dream which hasn't made it easy to be without them.
She leaned in when she got a flash of baby pictures. "Look, it's me," she said as she reached for one of the pictures. "I'm so cute."
“You are! Look at your eyes. Very sweet.” Tink held out that picture and a couple more. She flipped one over. “See? There’s the date on the back.” Then she turned back to her stack. “Lots of letters here. These look official.” Why would Peri’s mother have kept those for so long?
Peri gently took the photo from Tink to look more closely at the picture. She was looking at the baby in the picture and the other people in the picture. She couldn't remember ever seeing this photo. That was kind of the point of the whole thing. "I'm keeping this," she said as she looked over to the papers that Tink had.
"What are those?"
Tink nodded. She loved all the pictures. She held out the papers she’d just been unfolding. “I dunno. They’re probably about as old as the pictures, though.” She said. Once Peri took hold of them, she started on the next pile.
Peri set down the picture on the coffee table. With one hand she picked up the wine glass and with the other she took the letter from Tink.
It was a letter from a fertility clinic. She could see it on the the envelope but she couldn't see why her mother would keep it. Maybe it was just junk mail like a billing statement that ended up getting kept through the years. With two fingers she slipped the letter out of the envelope and flipped it open.
"What the...," she said almost under her breath. "Oh my god." She continued to read the letter. "Oh my god!"
Tink had moved on to the next stack. There were a bunch of pictures of Peri in here, old ones, from her childhood. Definitely keepers. But the sounds coming out of her sister friend were alarming. “What is it?” Tink asked, concerned. “You okay?”
At first Tink's concern went unheard by the other blonde. The words in the letter were still taking over every thought in her mind. It was almost as though hearing an echo when she finally realized that Tink was talking to her.
Peri's fingers squeezed the paper as she looked up at Tink.
"It's about a mistake that was made at my mother's fertility clinic," she said quietly. She thought that she should probably explain that part a little. "My mom needed a little help to get pregnant. This says that another fertilized egg was..."
She couldn't believe what she was reading.
Tink’s breath caught in her throat. For a moment she felt like an outsider, someone who shouldn’t be privy to such information. It was a private, family matter. And Tink wasn’t part of her family. Not in this world, not like in the Dreams.
She nodded. “Go on.” It wasn’t her mother’s egg. It was some other egg. Tink’s heart was thundering.
Of all the thing's that Peri thought that she would find in the boxes this wasn't one of them. This wasn't even under the least likely list. It was too much for her. She jerked her hand towards Tink.
"Take it," she said as she waved it. "I ca... can't read anymore." Her voice cracked as she spoke. Eyes glossy as tears started to form in her eyes.
Tink took the letter. She was so curious, but didn't want to pry... aaah, it was impossible! Okay, she took a quick look. And gasped.
"Oh my god." Tink said.
The paper claimed someone named Coleman was the egg donor. That was Tink's name. Well, Tink's last name. Did that mean they were related?
Peri didn't know what to think of the letter she was just holding. Even being an adult she couldn't wrap her mind around what she had just read. She knew what it said, what it meant but couldn't accept what was in that letter. Especially the date in which the letter was sent. It sent a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.
She took a shaky breath as Tink expressed shock.
"What?!" she asked wondering about what else could have been in that letter.
“You… Your mom knew. This whole time.” Tink said. She swallowed, hard. “...do you think… it’s the same Coleman?” She asked, timidly.
It wasn't real. It couldn't be real. She thought that she looked like her parents. Someone had to have mentioned it but she couldn't recall it at this moment.
Her lower lip quiver as Tink spoke. 'Your mom knew. This whole time' echoed in her mind. In shock she quickly stood up and stepped away from the boxes. 'Coleman'
No.
No!
"This was a bad idea," she said with her voice cracking. "I think you should go." A small squeak at the end of her sentence.
“Oh. Um. Yes. Sorry.” Tink set the paper down on the table, and stood. She gave her shoulders a slight shake and her wings disappeared. At least she hadn’t had enough to drink to make her drunk yet.
“I’ll um… I’ll see you later.” Tink said. She felt weird about leaving, but… this wasn’t her family stuff. This was Peri’s stuff.
It wasn't that she didn't want to be around Tink. It was more that she didn't want to be emotional in front of Tink. She was trying so hard not to cry to the point that her body was shaking.
She took a few steps to seem like she was walking Tink over to the door.
"I'm sorry," she said in a quiet voice. "I ju.. I can't. I'm sorry."
Tink moved to the door. She didn’t really want to leave, but she didn’t want to stay, either. She didn’t want to force her way in. She nodded. “I know. I’m sorry.” Tink replied. She wished she was better at these sorts of things. Knowing what to say.
Without any more words, Tink reached a hand out to touch Peri’s arm, a gesture of support and friendship, then let herself out the front door.
Peri lightly bit on her lower lip as the two girls approached the door. She didn't want to say anymore. She didn't think she could without starting to cry and she really didn't want to break down in front of Tink. It wasn't a normal situation when a secret like this comes to light.
She closed her eyes for a second as Tink briefly comforted her.
After the door was closed she turned back to face her hotel room and slid against the door. On the ground she started crying.
