Rose was having a blast meeting up with friends after the holidays to exchange gifts and catch up. She had gotten in touch with Will earlier to meet up at their local tea shoppe to catch up on the holiday festivities. Will had become one of Rose’s most favorite people. He was fun to tease with and even more fun to hang out with. He had such a passion for what he was studying that she found herself inspired by him. The thought of going back to school had been prominent in her mind and she found that she had been surrounding herself with students or professors at the college.
She seemed to have arrived earlier than Will and chose a seat by the window, unwinding her scarf from her neck. The weather had certainly let up, but it was still chilly in the morning and downright frozen at night. She was surprised it had stopped snowing altogether, although she couldn’t be that sad at all. As much as a snowy winter had been nice, she was ready for that California sun she had moved for!
The owner of the shoppe came over and Rose put in an order for a pot of hot water, an assortment of tea and biscuits. She placed Will’s present of wrapped books on the table and glanced outside, waiting for her friend to arrive.
Will enjoyed Roses company a lot, she was fun and easy to get along with and, of course, she shared his love of tea. It was nice to relax with a good friend and he was very much looking forward to catching up with her after the craziness of Christmas.
He’d brought her a nice jumper dress, very pretty scarf and a couple of cute tops one with a Tea slogan on it. He was actually a very good shopper considering he was a man. And he’d definitely had a few seen it and thought of you moments while shopping. Not just for Rose but for Clary and Jem too.
Entering the tea shoppe that they frequented he spotted her and smiled making his way over, “Sorry to keep you waiting Rose, it was a lot busier than I anticipated” he said as he sat down.
Rose stood up as Will came in, embracing him before letting him sit down. “Not to worry!” she said, a grin on her face. “It seems we may come here a little too often ‘cause Lottie already got us our favorites.” She gestured to the spread that was already at the table. Not that Rose minded being known as a regular; it had a cute kind of charm to it that she could walk in and the owner would know exactly what she wanted.
“So! How was your holiday? You look well!”
Will didn’t mind that at all either, in fact he was proud of it. It just meant they’d been right about this place and Lottie. It was a good tea shoppe.
“Thanks. It was great. I can’t remember a better one actually” Of course having a committed boyfriend and girlfriend to celebrate with helped matters a lot. “How about you? Have fun?” he asked her.
She smiled, happy to hear he had such a wonderful holiday. “I’m glad being stateside didn’t make a difference of holiday! Although I would have to agree, mine was very good. Relaxing, save for trying to learn how to cook. I’m complete rubbish at it.” She made a face. “You wouldn’t happen to be a chef would you? I wanna try and learn how to cook a nice dinner for my roommate! He’s always cooking and I feel bad for not being able to help contribute.”
“Well actually cooking just happens to be one of my many talents” Will informed her, “So you are rather in luck there. I’m no chef but I can hold my own in the kitchen. I’m sure I can help you out if you like”
Rose had just taken a drink, but quickly put down the cup, a smile spreading. “Will, would you really? I would love to cook dinner for my roommate! It would surprise him, plus help him since he either cooks or we do take out.” She gave him a face and a shrug. “I can pay you back in...oh, I dunno. What would you like? Diamonds? Money?” She grinned over the rim of her mug. “Or maybe just some good tea?”
“Of course” Will said, “It would be my pleasure to help you out. Something simple yet impressive” he nodded before laughing, “You don’t need to pay me back silly, though I won’t ever say no to tea” he grinned.
“Well then that shall be the form of payment,” she said, her smile growing as their silliness did. “What do you think would be nice to try and make? Easy, but elegant I think.” She held out her way in front of her, waving it away as if describing a magical destination. She would be lucky if Will could show her how to cook without burning every ingredient they used!
Will had a few cooking techniques and tips up his sleeve. His mother had made sure he could cook especially after realising his little sister was rather hopeless in the kitchen. She had claimed at least one of her children should be able to survive alone without microwave meals. “Easy but elegant...Italian, maybe lasagne or a pasta dish?” Filling, easy and maybe not elegant but at least classic.
“Brilliant!” she said, grinning. “You can’t really mess up pasta can you? Oh, unless it comes out soggy...I’ve done that before...overcooked it.” She made a face, sticking her tongue out. “But you’ll be there so I couldn’t mess it up! Good tips and all that, right?” Rose ran through her mind what to add to the dinner. “Probably a salad, veggie, and garlic bread? Or do you think that’s too generic?”
“I think that sounds perfect. Maybe candlelight and music, depending on the kind of relationship you have or want with your roommate” he added with a grin. Because if it was him and Jem he knew he’d go all out but not everybody wanted to bed their roommate. But of course it was always fun to tease Rose.
Rose couldn’t help but grin and shrug when he teased her about the nature of the dinner. “Well, I definitely want to make it nice. So I think candlelight and music would be nice to add to it.” She smiled, picking up her cup and taking a sip to hide the smile that stayed on her face. It was a little ridiculous really how much she had come to care for John and how the thought or mention of him made her smile this much.
“Anyway!” She put her cup down, setting down that part of their conversation too. “I got you a little something. I hope you like them!” She bit her lower lip as she handed him the wrapped packages of books. He’d find a few vintage looking copies of classics she enjoyed, such as Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Robin Hood. “I’m sure you have them, but these were my favorites growing up and they looked really neat so…” Another shrug and another sip of tea. “I hope you like ‘em though!”
Will clapped, “I want a complete report after the event. You saucy minx trying to keep that little bit of information from me” he grinned at her. He was glad there was someone that she liked because she was a lovely person and deserved someone special.
But he let her change the subject. For now. He smiled as she handed over the gifts, “Thank you Rose, I got something for you too” he said as he handed her the wrapped clothing. “If anything is wrong just let me know” though he was fairly confident, the perks of having a sister.
“Oh shut it you,” she said, but with a grin. “Nothing saucy about it, just a really great guy. Who you should meet by the way! I think you’d like him.” She gave him a grin with her tongue sticking out a little, staying that way as he handed her his gift. “Thanks Will!” She leaned across the table to give him a kiss on the cheek, but tucked the present away to open later on.
“How are Jem and Tessa doing?” Rose had never met the other two, but always heard such wonderful things from Will.
“Sure I’d like that. Need to make sure he’s good enough for you after all” he teased before kissing her cheek in return, “Thank you”
“They are as wonderful as always, we had a really nice cosy Christmas actually and we have plans to go to a beach party for New Year” he smiled, talking about his boyfriend and girlfriend always made him go a little dopey. He loved them both very much.
Rose gave a playful roll of her eyes when he said he wanted to meet John, but knew it was in jest. There wasn’t a person John couldn’t get along with and Will was so warm and caring she knew the two would hit it off!
“Maybe we can all get dinner sometime,” she said. “I really wanna meet them!” She picked up a biscuit, breaking it in two and stuffing the first piece in her mouth. “But I’m glad you guys had such a nice holiday! I’m sure the beach will be beautiful! Bundle up though, I’m sure it’ll be colder than usual!”
Of course he was winding her up but it wasn’t all a joke. He did want to meet this guy and give him the don’t hurt her talk. Because that’s what best buddies did.
“Sure that would be great” Will agreed, “I think you’ll like them. They’re both a bit quieter than me” Not that it was hard, Will was rather outgoing. “I’ll be prepared, coats and jumpers are at the ready. Do you have plans?”
Rose laughed, shaking her head. “Well, I guess there does have to be the outgoing one of the group.” She gave him a nudge with her foot under the table to show she was just messing with him. “Well, I’ll be on my best behavior so I won’t overwhelm them or anything like that. Although if they’re dating you, they’ve probably seen the worse.” She grinned, it was almost too easy to joke around with Will, but that was probably the best aspect she liked about them. She knew how much he cared about her and vice versa, so the teasing was all in good fun.
“I think we’re going to a friends party that Stark Industries is throwing. Should be a lot of fun!”
“I definitely fit that bill” he told her, knowing she was and laughing when she teased him. Their friendship was absolutely built on fun ribbing with an undercurrent of caring. It was nice and easygoing which was perfect for them both. And of course they had British in-jokes which also united them.
“Ooo Stark huh? Pretty cool. I want photos, bet you have a cracking outfit”
“Ugh, I haven’t even thought of an outfit!” She made a face, knowing that she would need to think of something soon. “Can you help me?” She gave him a puppy dog face, pleading him for his help. She loved shopping as much as the next girl, but sometimes she had a hard time finding the outfit that really suited her. Plus, since she was going to a place that wasn’t her own place of work, she didn’t want to make a complete fool of herself! “Doesn’t have to be today! Maybe we can make another date?”
“I think I could probably help you out. It’s been a while since I’ve been shopping with my sister but I remember what to do” he teased with a grin, “We’ll find the perfect outfit for you to wow them all with, especially your John” he winked. “Another date sounds perfect, we need to be fully prepared for a day of shopping and dressing up” In complete truth Will rather enjoyed shopping, especially with someone like Rose who appreciated honesty and good taste.
Rose couldn’t help but blush a little and she tried to hide it by taking a sip of her tea. “Well, just something that will make an impression at this event! But...I guess it would be alright to make a good impression for John.” She grinned at Will, not ashamed to admit her admiration of her new flatmate. Well, at least not to Will. He liked to tease, but he didn’t have any linked connection to John like Gwen did; it was nice to talk about it without wondering how they would take it or if they would say anything to John. Rose was sure Gwen wouldn’t do something like that, but she still felt more relaxed talking to Will about it.
“When works best for you?”
Even if Will did know John he wouldn’t have said anything, Rose was one of his best mates and as such had his complete loyalty. It was just the way he worked. He had to hang on to those who could take and give the banter they shared, a lot of people were lacking a decent sense of humour he’d discovered either that or his sarcasm was getting lost in translation.
“Anytime except Wednesdays, I’ve got this one tutor who has a bee in their bonnet about me being there for class. The others have recognised my superior intellect naturally” he winked, or at least recognised that Will had already done all the reading and understood the texts really well.
“Well who do they think they are? Boycott I say! Show them a thing or two!” Rose grinned through it all and thought of her own schedule. “With the new flights, it seems mine are a little more up in the air, but what about a Thursday? I’m usually off those days, at least will be for awhile! Stupid snow.” She glanced outside at the winter wonderland that was keeping her grounded. “For helping me I’ll treat you to a fancy lunch of pub food and a brew, how does that sound?”
“I know. I did consider it” Will chuckled, “Thursday works. Oh of course, interfering a bit I imagine” he nodded, at least everything hadn’t stopped like it would have back home just on seeing one flake of snow. “That sounds brilliant to me. You have yourself a shopping buddy” he grinned.
