New day, new class, new semester. Quentin was excited to fix all of the mistakes that he’d made last semester, and get into some deeper material with this class load. He’d seen some familiar faces wandering the halls and sitting in his lectures, and was starting to really feel at ease now. It was only his second semester, though. He was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It was the first day of Magic, Science and Religion, a class that fulfilled some General Education requirements. The mix of students in his class was strange and varied. Older, younger, from all walks of life. It was wonderful. He was looking forward to reading essays from this bunch.

And then a familiar looking blonde girl caught his eye. He stared for a moment, trying to place the face, as his sentence derailed and he lost track of it. Then he shuffled the papers on his podium, feeling like a complete jack-ass. He caught up with his lecture and started up again, getting to his major points without too much more hassle.

The semester was not off to the best start. Caroline had of course been late to her first class of the semester earlier that day, and of course she had forgotten her wallet having to resort to compulsion to get a cup of coffee. Now she was in her Magic, Science and Religion class. One she had looked into after meeting the Professor the toys for tots event before Christmas.

So far the class seemed pretty interesting. Although Caroline did notice with Quen- er Professor Coldwater paused his lecture staring at her for a moment. Talk about awkward. However the blonde just brushed it off. Within moments he was back on track again anyways.

She spent the class listening intently and taking notes. The last thing Caroline wanted was to have another semester like her previous one. She was determined to do well in her classes, not just barely pass. Eventually class ended and Caroline packed up her things to head out. However, she lingered back for a moment waiting until everyone else cleared out of the room before approaching the Professor. “Good class,” she complimented. “I am glad you told me to look into it.”

“I thought I recognised you,” Quentin said, snapping the snaps on his soft briefcase, with his paperwork safely inside. “You decided to take a look into Religious Studies, then?” He asked, then lifted the case and came around his desk to join her in front of the rows of desks.

“Yup. Turns out I could use the credit,” she shrugged. “I could tell. Do you usually stop in the middle of your lectures?” she asked somewhat teasing him.

Ah, crap. He’d been caught. Quentin cleared his throat a little sheepishly and shook his head. “No. Only when I get thrown off by trying to place a familiar face.” He said. Not a pretty face. She was a student. But a familiar face.

“Makes sense,” she replied giving him her usual warm smile. “Well I am flattered you remembered me,” she added adjusting her backpack on her shoulder. “So what got you into the whole religion thing?” Caroline had no problem talking to her professor as if her were a peer. Of course she had respect for him, but they were all just people.

“I’m not sure. It just seemed the next step, academically.” Quentin explained. “I wasn’t sure what to do after we sold the start-up. I’d always been good at school, so I went back. And there’s not a whole lot that a person can do with a Masters in Comparative Religion. So here I am.”

“Start-up?” she was learning more about Quentin by the second. And to think she originally thought he was just some shy, lonely, professor. “Okay so, what got you interested in Comparative Religion? It’s kind of an uncommon major.”

Quentin was some shy, lonely professor. She wasn’t wrong. Actually, he wasn’t completely lonely. He was alone, but that didn’t make him unhappy about it. He motioned toward the corridor. There was another class coming into the classroom. He started up the steps toward the hall entrance. “I founded a start-up with my college roommate. We sold it for quite a chunk of change. That funded my return to school.” He stepped up the stairs, slowly, making sure she was coming with. “I’ve always been interested in what makes people tick.”

Caroline made her way up the steps and out of the classroom with her professor. She was a bit more curious about what exactly his start-up was, but what he said next caught her attention even more. That was part of the reason she was a psych major after all. She wanted to know what made people tick. “I know what you mean. Everyone is so different, it’s interesting to see how they became the way they are.”

“I agree.” Quentin said, nodding. He approved of her enthusiasm. Her chipperness was almost catching. Almost. He wasn’t as susceptible to it as some others might have been. “Learning about what people care about can tell us what motivates them. That’s probably one of the reasons that I wanted to study religion. It’s the belief system that really makes people tick.”

“I guess I never really thought about it that way.” And here she was just taking the class to fill a general ed requirement and because she had met the professor. She had no idea she would actually enjoy it or be able to relate to him. “I think I am really going to enjoy your class.”

“Good.” Quentin said, and gave him a smile. “I’ll be glad to have one student who enjoys the subject.” He stopped in the hall, and gave her a nod. “Don’t let me keep you from your next class. I’ve got to go and sit in my office for office hours.” It was dreadfully boring. No one ever came by. And definitely not this early in the semester.

“Have fun with that,” office hours didn’t sound all that fun. “I’ll see you next class!”
