The past couple days had been a bit of a blur. Things had been busy for both Lissa and Rose like usual, but tonight she decided that she was going to be a good roommate and stay home. Lissa could use a night of relaxation and Rose was going to do that for her. She had put her iPod on shuffle and was dancing around the kitchen as she made dinner. Tonight was going to be a garlic sirloin tip roast with some vegetables and mashed potatoes. The place was smelling amazing when she heard the door open. “Welcome home!” She called out to Lissa, well she hoped it was Lissa, before setting the spoon she was holding down and went to go check to make sure it was her roomie and not some burglar.
With her baby pink leather backpack slung over one shoulder and a book under her arm, Lissa looked up at Rose’s greeting, surprised she was beaten home. Then the smell of food hit her and her stomach growled, smiling she replied back joking, “Hey, what’s cooking?!” Taking her key from the door she shut and locked it before dumping her bag with great relief, rolling her shoulder to ease the ache from her burden.
“I decided to be fancy and found a recipe for a garlic sirloin tip roast on google. I thought you’d like to have dinner made for you instead of the other way around. You spoil me too much by making dinner every time. I wanted to surprise you especially when you’re coming up on finals soon,” Rose pointed out with a laugh as she made her way back into the kitchen. It was a lot of fun to see the expression on Lissa’s face when she discovered her in the kitchen, “Besides, my skills are rusty, so might as well make use of them.”
"Very fancy!" Lissa replied as she followed Rose into their kitchen. Glancing around at what was being made she couldn't help but cringe as Rose mentioned finals, "yeah horrible finals, I really don't understand why they make you take them during the holidays, just seems grossly unfair!" Sighing she set her elbows on the bar counter and cradled her face in her hands before adding, "Thanks roomie, I really appreciate it and I'm sure my tummy will as well."
“Well, at least you take them before the holidays and then you can relax during the actual holidays. It is kind of mean, isn’t it? I’m so glad I’m not in grad school,” she looked over at her roomie and grabbed a glass of wine that she had poured earlier, “And here, you need a drink. The food is almost done. Are we going to go home for the holidays or should we just hang out just the two of us? I’m sure someone at the gym is having a Friendsgiving we could possibly attend if we wanted to be around people.”
“Very mean but at least my classes only go about a week into December.” Lissa replied as she reached for the glass of wine, wine was one thing Lissa loved and would always take when offered. Sipping and listening to Rose she shrugged her shoulders, “My parents and brother are going to Aspen as usual, I’m not sure I feel like traveling whatsoever, but convincing them that I’ll be fine here will be just as tiring. I really do like the sound of staying here though…”
“Well, if your parents knew I would be here then they’d probably be more willing to let us hang out. I know they’ll bother us until we come home for Christmas, but having one holiday without travel would be good. We should look for plane tickets soon,” Rose commented. It seemed like a good idea and hopefully their parents would go along with it, “Alright, roast should be done as soon as the time goes off in -- two minutes. I’ll start dishing everything else up now.”
“I’ll talk to them and make it seem like we’ll be attached by the hip, I still don’t understand why they’re so protective, they’re not like that with my brother.” Lissa wore a contemplative look on her face while she said that. Sighing softly into her wine before taking another sip she watched Rose and smiled, “It’s odd to see you in the kitchen without pizza or something! Need any help?” She asked as she moved around the counter, aiming to help.
“It’s because you’re just so beauuuuuuuutiful. Your parents are a little weird. Maybe it’s because we ran away from home?” Rose teased her then stuck her tongue out at her best friend. How dare she accuse her of never cooking in the kitchen. Okay. She rarely cooked, but she didn’t hate cooking. She just… didn’t have as much time for it sometimes, “Hey now, that’s mean. I will take away your food if you make fun of me again. But nah, I’m totally almost done. You sit back and relax.”
Rolling her eyes at Rose's compliment and then grinned, "They were livid when we did that, I've never seen them like that ever before!" Taking a small sip of her wine she stayed at the bar and watched as she worked, "Ok, ok no more teasing!!"
“Yeah well, we have to grow up some day. It’s kind of boring out there anyway. Why wouldn’t we want to have tons of fun out in sunny California,” Rose laughed as the timer went off and she leaned down to grab the roast out of the oven. She placed it on top of the oven to cool down and she finished plating everything else, “Damn right. So, what else have you been up to?”
"I feel like they'll perpetually see me as some young girl and not an adult.." Lissa mumbled, more to herself than to Rose. "Just the usual really, school and studying. I forgot to tell you I got a teacher assistant job to put in as part of my work study experience. What about you? I feel like it's been forever since we caught up!"
“You did? That’s awesome! We are so breaking open some ice cream to celebrate after this,” Rose was so excited for Lissa. That was a huge thing and definitely helped move along her schooling. She cut up the roast and plated it before bringing it over to the table for them, “Not a whole lot. Gone out with this boy a few times and just working out at the gym. Should have a big match coming up in December.”
"I may be too stuffed for ice cream!" Lissa commented as she looked at the food and took a seat at the table. Looking up surprised she practically screeched, "Wait! Whoa! What?! You're seeing someone?"
Rose was anticipating that kind of reaction, so her expression was just one of mild amusement and a slight coloring of her cheeks, “I guess you can call it that. We’re not a couple or anything. He’s taken me out on a couple dates, but I think he wants to keep it casual as well. He was that guy dressed as Captain Kirk at our Halloween party.” Once she finished speaking she cut into her roast and shoved a rather large piece in her mouth so she didn’t have to say much more.
Lissa was grinning ear to ear, she happily teased, "Oooh! He was a cute Captain Kirk if I recall properly!" Cutting her roast in even little bites she took her first bite and made a small noise of appreciation, "This is heavenly!" She commented and couldn't help but smile at her best friend once more.
“He is extremely cute,” Rose agreed with a bit of a laugh. She wasn’t completely sure if Lissa had noticed the two of them disappearing into her room for the rest of the party or not. But, she couldn’t really complain about Tom at all since they were having such a good time already, “And good! I’m glad you like it. I was hoping it would turn out okay.” She had to agree, the roast turned out great, and she was so pleased that it was done right.
Lissa couldn’t help it she had to tease Rose just a bit more, it wasn’t often she was given such good ammo! Wiggling her eyebrows at her friend she speared a piece of roast and said in a voice that shook a little from trying to hold a giggle in, “It’s so good maybe you should make it for Captain Kirk!”
“Oh my god,” her face flushed red as she lifted up her glass to hide her face and take a long drink, “I don’t think I’ve ever cooked for a guy before. That seems like taking it a step too far. I mean, he catered a lunch for us on a hike, but he didn’t make it himself. I don’t know, I’ll think about it. Now, you - you could catch a man with your cooking.”
Lissa couldn’t hold back her laughter any longer she let out a few giggles as she watched her friend, it was hilarious to see her squirm and be embarrassed since it definitely wasn’t like Rose to be this way. She nodded in agreement before adding, “Maybe later on if you two love birds are still seeing each other.” It was Lissa’s turn to flush as she heard what her friend said, taking a leisurely sip of her wine she shook her head, “A man? With my schedule?”
There were few things that made Rose squirm and talking about potential relationships was one of them. Lissa knew her well and knew exactly what to say to elicit those kind of responses. It was a good thing that she loved her friend dearly and let her get away with it, “Maybe. We’ll see about that. And you need an academic man as well who understands your kind of schedule. Then you two can have cute study dates in the library.”
"Or someone older, who has a life and career." Lissa thought aloud before taking a bite and looking up surprised that she even said that aloud. Swallowing loudly she took a long sip and muttered, "Nevermind."
“Oooooh, snap. Do you have someone in mind?” Her eyes went wide and she paused with her fork in midair. This was some juicy gossip and Rose was greatly interested. Lissa being interested in older men was something new and she could definitely see how that would work well for her.
"What? No!" Lissa quickly replied and then took another healthy sized bite to avoid answering anything else.
“Oh my god. DO YOU?” Rose was getting excited now at the idea of finding out about Lissa’s secret crush. Oh this was definitely turning interesting and it got all the focus off her and her not-really-a-relationship with Tom.
“Seriously! Rose! No!” Lissa replied trying her best to sound outraged, because seriously it was nothing and it came from nothing. It was a bit of a random thought.
Rose couldn’t help but laugh as she settled down and let the subject go for Lissa’s sake. It was just amusing to get her friend riled up because it didn’t happen very often, “Alright, alright. Let’s just eat and enjoy this relaxing dinner because I don’t want to think about anything stressful for a while.”
Relieved, Lissa sighed into her wine glass before taking a healthy sip. "Nothing stressful sounds perfect!"
