It had started simple enough. Nat had made the preparations for their trip to Europe, complete with a great deal of weaponry and enough supplies for a week in the field. It was then that she’d gotten a distress call from the Agency’s self-proclaimed info wench. Three words “Hydra Demon Soldiers” before Kitty’s signal went dead.
She picked up her phone and made a call. “Change of plans. I’m getting authorization from the Director for an operation in California. We have a distress call from your illustrious leader.” She paused, then added. “Domino, is there anyone of yours you want to bring in on this?”
"You mean it's not going to just be the two of us anymore? And here I packed my extra pair of fuzzy handcuffs," Dom joked. She'd had her gear ready to board whatever transport was taking them to Europe, but she set it back down on her table. Probably, the amount of gear they'd need here in California was much smaller scale.
"What kind of Op is it? And which leader made the call?"
“Rescue op, and it’s Pryde. She got out a message about Hydra. Demon soldiers.” Natasha made a disgusted sound. “I hope she is not being literal. We don’t have the budget for an exorcism.”
"Oh she probably is. I wouldn't be surprised. We've fought demons plenty of times in our universe. You should have been there the day they almost took over an entire bank. It was just me and one other person. Fun times." Dom quipped. If it was demons, she was going to need more ammunition. Was it too late to get some holy water? Did that even work on them? Explosives had worked well enough last time.
"I'm going to get the C4. And if Kitty's the one in need of a rescue then we better get her woman involved. A telepath might be handy anyway, silent comms then."
“I’m friends with Logan,” Nat replied by way of explaining she understood the demon thing. “I don’t have time to check with the occult division and I’d rather not work with Loki if I can help it, no matter what the director thinks. I’ll pick you two up in the chopper, if you’ve got anything special, grab it..” She cut the comm, then zipped up her suit and jogged for the elevator.
"Yeah, who wasn't," Neena mumbled to herself. If Nat had cut off the comms it meant she was going to be there shortly. She didn't waste any time in grabbing some of the extra anti-demon things she thought they'd need. More explosives, extra ammunition, her favorite crossbow, and salt. She was pretty sure she'd read that salt and demons didn't mix, somewhere. Maybe that was a myth, but there was no better time to put that to the test, right?
That taken care of, she reached her mind out a bit and shouted for Rachel. Hey mini-phoenix, you out there eavesdropping?
Kitty sent me a distress call already, came Rachel's reply. The redhead had pulled on her costume, ugly as it was, and was sitting on her front lawn trying not to panic. The Phoenix had proven unruly when her emotions ran high, and they didn't need that today.
Nat's bringing a helicopter to pick you up. We'll see you soon. Won't this be fun?
Loads of fun. Rachel said, her mental tone dripping with sarcasm. She hated waiting, but there was nothing better to do. Except to reassure Kitty that help was coming, which she did.
Crossbows were always useful against demon soldiers, or just about anyone else. They were also really quiet, which Nat liked. The Chopper was already spinning up as she ran up to it and climbed in. “Go!”
The pilot lifted off, and they sped over the city towards Neena’s house. It was closer than the Summers residence. She didn’t even do the courtesy of waiting for Neena to climb up the ladder all the way before they were moving on towards Rachel.
"No problem. I've always wanted to climb up a ladder in the middle of the air with an armory on my back," Neena grunted. She was too good at this to let her hands slip as she climbed the remaining rungs, nor was she one to be afraid of heights. Time travel and space, yes. But regular old heights? Nah. She pulled herself up into the chopper as it continued on its way over the city, and took quick stock of her bags.
"I gave Rach a telepathic heads up. She should be ready for us. Of course she has less to pack than I do."
“I thought you needed a warm up,” Natasha replied, evenly. She winked lightly, then nodded. “We’ll be there in two minutes.”
And she was right, they picked up Rachel in 119 seconds, and then sped off to the north. Once the other two women were settled, she gave them the run down. “The Director had Kitty run an errand after lunch. It was supposed to be an intel pick up, but something clearly went wrong. She sent me a distress call. I have her last location and we believe Hydra to be involved. They seem to have completely absorbed Cerberus.”
"It's everything we ever wanted," Rachel replied, dryly. She was trying to remain calm, since the two women she was in the helicopter were known for keeping their game faces on. She tapped a finger against her temple, and added, "I'll link us up. I assume that's one of the reasons you guys decided to bring me along."
"That and I wanted to see if you'd actually be caught out in public wearing that uniform," Neena quipped. She turned to Natasha and asked, "We know there are demons. What kind of facility are we raiding, here? Warehouse, Lab? I assume we're dropping in from the roof and infiltrating from there. That's another reason you're good to have along, Rach. You can clear the way for us if there's human brains down there and not just mindless demonic ones."
Rachel nodded, "No one will even know we're there. Except the demons. They'll definitely know."
"It was just supposed to be a coffee stop," Nat replied. "Dead drop and pickup, sensitive enough that she was doing it personally. Guess someone was waiting for her. Luckily for us the Director had her wear a tracker."
The spy tapped the tiny studs in her ears. They looked good and were pretty hard to rip out. "Just like this. She's about fifteen miles from the pickup and still moving."
"We can still find her if the tracker goes offline," Rachel said, while tapping two fingers against the side of her head, "I can hunt her mutant signature. It's not something I enjoy doing, but in this case I'm more than happy to."
No one wanted to find Kitty as badly as Rachel did. She thought she could even use the Phoenix's teleportation powers to get right to her if she had to. That was a huge use of power, though, and Rachel didn't want to abuse it. Or give the cosmic entity the reigns for longer than necessary.
"But hopefully it doesn't, because if it does I don't like her chances." Neena added, with a bit of a frown. The tracking earrings looked pretty hard to mess with, though, so she decided not to worry about that for the time being.
Natasha nodded at her, but didn’t ask. There wasn’t really time and in all frankness she absolutely didn’t want to know about such things - it would be too tempting to use it. So if she didn’t know the details, she’d be less likely to seek Rachel out for that kind of mission unless it was a major emergency.
The chopper cut through the air quickly, and after a few minutes they had closed in on what looked like a uhaul-style moving truck.
“I’d bet my lunch she’s in there. Either she’s unconscious or she’s deliberately not trying to escape.”
"Or it's a trap." Neena peered down at the truck, trying to get a feel for the situation. She pretty much always had a bad feeling in situations like this. "It's probably a trap."
Rachel mentally surveyed the situation and started mentally evacuating anyone that was around the area. Just in case the truck really was a trap. It seemed like it probably was, since "I can't get a read on her mind. They're either blocking me now or she's out like a light. I'm clearing the area now, you two can spring this trap whenever you're ready."
“Can you cushion the interior of that truck?” Nat pulled out and RPG and took aim. “I’m going for the tire but we don’t want to bang her up. You two get ready. We’re not doing subtle today.”
"It's like you're whispering sweet nothings into my ear," Neena said, while cracking a grin. She slung her weapons into various holsters and packed her ammunition into her pockets. It didn't take her that long. Neena was always prepared to go weapons ready in an instant.
Meanwhile, Rachel sent her TK out to try to create a pocket of force on the inside of the truck. She nodded, deciding to switch to telepathic comms since it was easier for her to maintain, Cushion is up, boss. You're good to go. I'm ready to give us all a soft landing, too.
Nat generally preferred subtle and quiet, but they needed to hit them hard and fast. In and out before they knew what was happening, and maybe taking out some targets while they were at it. Besides, she felt it was very important to remind Hydra of just what they were dealing with. And she wanted to draw out these 'demon' soldiers.
FOOMP! The grenade curled through the air, hitting the vehicle on the front right tire. The explosion flipped it end over end. Nat jumped out, sending a mental message to Rachel to slow their fall.
As soon as she was on the ground she rolled out of the line of fire - the truck's escort vehicles had pulled into a barricade position.
A force of energy hit her, and lifted her off the ground. She had a glimpse of a man with glowing red eyes, before she kicked off the ground and somersaulted out of the way.
The main issue was keeping the contents inside the truck steady as it flipped around, and Rachel's eyes began to glow orange as she exerted her mental muscles. She made sure that everyone landed softly, and then put herself in the middle of the two deadly women as the barricades went up.
As soon as Domino's feet hit the ground, she spun and started shooting at anything that moved. It was, of course, important to identify innocent bystanders from foes, but she trusted Rachel to get them all out of the line of fire.
Dudes with glowing red eyes were getting shot in the face, and Dom sounded like she was having a grand old time. Unfortunately, her bullets didn't seem to be bringing them down very quickly, "Okay so they're very durable or have a healing factor or both. Aren't we having fun now?"
“Buckets of fun,” Rachel replied. One of the soldiers lifted up in the air, an aura of flame surrounding him.
Something like the sound of an unholy bird spawn of hell echoed overhead, but there was nothing there. The air had a heavy, sick feeling to it. Hydra's first batch of soldiers created from their knowledge of a certain Teen Titan wasn't perfect, but this was just a test run. One ripped the door off of the truck, and pulled an unconscious Kitty out of it. His hand went to snap her neck.
Nat blew his thumb off but that only seemed to make him more determined.
"Oh boy..." Neena raised her eyebrows and glanced between the guy, kitty, and Rachel. Rachel looked like she was about to light herself on fire with rage, and Neena decided to give the psychic some distance. She kept the pressure going on some of the other guys around them, and shook her head, "That was a mistake. He's about to have a really, really bad day."
Really bad day was an understatement. Rachel was so angry that flames were licking at the corners of her eyes. No one threatened her woman. She held her hand out in front of her, using her telekinesis to choke the man. Not unlike Darth Vader, really.
"Let her go, or I'll make your brain physically melt out of your ears, slowly enough that you're aware of how painful that is for at least the first few seconds."
Despite the choking, the man's head jerked and twitched until he had managed to turn it enough to stare Rachel into the eyes. His own burned brighter, and his mind felt like an abyss that led only to madness. His hand squeezed around Kitty's neck.
Nat called out to Neena. "Two on your left!"
It was a good thing that Rachel had dealt with the abyss and madness before, or she wasn't sure she would have survived the long look in there she'd taken. Clearly, there was nothing in there she could really melt out of his eyeballs, but that wasn't going to stop her. Telekinetic energy wrapped around the fingers that were squeezing around Kitty's neck, and Rachel attempted to remove them by force. She'd break them if she had to. She'd break him.
Meanwhile, Neena was doing her level best not to get distracted by the show. "Right! Check your six!"
Her bullets weren't as useful as she'd been hoping, so Neena pulled out her crossbow and sent a bolt right through someone's throat. She let out a little victory whoop as that man fell over, and danced backwards so that she could reload, "Well, at least we know getting medieval on them works!"
The man's fingers bent back at an unnatural angle, the snap audible. He roared, his hands catching fire. He flung a fireball at Rachel, then twisted back to turn Kitty to ash.
"Da." Two of them were getting close and she jumped on one, zapping her target with a widow's bite and then spinning off of him, her momentum sending him flying towards Neena. "Catch!"
She rolled as she landed, sending a dart into Rachel’s target’s back. It didn’t seem to do much.
"I love this game!" Neena shouted, as she loaded up another bolt and let it fly. If they kept this up, of course, she'd have to run around collecting her spent ones, but eh. This was the most fun she'd had in months.
Except for the part where it was seriously starting to look like Kitty was about to be set on fire. "Uh... Ray? DO you have that handled or are we supposed to start helping you now?"
"Oh I have this." Rachel assured Neena. She'd easily put up a barrier to absorb the flames as they'd flown at her, and now she was done playing nice. Kitty wasn't about to be turned into ash. She sent her TK out to put a barrier around Kitty, and then took to the air in a pillar of flame.
"You want a firefight, demon? I'll GIVE you one!" Her voice echoed. The demon caught fire, and let out a high pitched scream. He let Kitty go and began to run around, flailing his arms and trying to get the fire to go out. The flames burned bright and hot, and it was only a matter of seconds before he turned into a pile of ash and char on the pavement.
Rachel landed, and swept Kitty up in her arms. "My Kitty. Mine."
"I forgot how terrifying that sort of thing is," Nat grumbled. She pulled out a small gun and shot at one of the demon men. A tracker embedded itself in his flesh. "Pull back! We have the package, lets get out of here."
"Roger that, we have the package. Move out, soldiers," Neena replied, smirking. She wasn't as terrified of what Rachel could do as Nat was, though she did keep a careful watch on the redhead as she started to lift all four of them up into the air towards the helicopter and its ladder. It didn't seem to take much effort on Rachel's part, and they were soon heading back home.
Kitty remained safe and sound in Rachel's arms the entire time. There was no way she was letting go of her now.
