He’d been exchanging emails with her practically all month to make sure they were both absolutely clear on the rules. No explosions, no electricity, no cheating. Just good old fashioned battle bots.
It had been years since Newt had properly built something. He was into robotics as an undergrad but since graduating (and graduating and graduating), he hadn’t had the time to devote to building anything anymore. Until now. It was difficult, of course, trying to schedule things around his classes, his research, and his band, but he did it. His sleep suffered a little, but really, when did it not?
So now he was here with a creation he was proud of, 120 pounds of death and destruction lying under a piece of tarp, awaiting it’s prey.
Asami had buried herself in working on her bot. She’d expressly forbidden Korra from peaking at it until it had been complete, and then had tested it against the Avatar until she was sure it could survive just about anything. (her garage, on the other hand, had come out out the experience the worst off).
Asami had designed the basic shape off of some of the mecha she’d dreamed about. The things her father had made. But she’d made some design changes. Lower to the ground for balance, but still with the grapple and some added surprises. She grinned at Newt when she saw him and went to shake his hand. “I have to admit, I’m really excited.”
Newt gave her hand a firm shake. This was really happening. Robot carnage. It was all he wanted from life. And maybe for Godzilla to be real, but he was trying to keep things in the realm of possibility for the moment.
“Same,” he replied. “Although I’m really sorry.”
“Yeah, you’re going to be sorry you ever tried to go against me,” Asami boasted, her grin only growing wider. She could barely stand still. Weeks and weeks and weeks of hard work, all for this moment. One of them was going to be disappointed. The other was going to have bragging rights. “I’m open to a rematch.”
Newt’s face fell. He was going to say that he was sorry he was going to stomp her into the ground. She’d totally stolen his thunder. He’d underestimated her. That was a bad sign. He’d have to rethink his entire strategy. Or just make sure his robot beat hers to a pulp first.
“I don’t know that you’ll want one after my robot annihilates yours, but I’m open to one as well,” he said.
And with that, he flipped the tarp off of his robot. It looked… sort of similar to hers, actually. Based on a mech he saw in his dreams. Painted bright blue with red accents. In white script, he’d added “Der Jaeger” on the side. “The Hunter”. A badass name for a badass battle bot.
“Are we going to go with an honor system?” he asked. “Mine’s up to the standards and restrictions we agreed on. Do I need to check that yours is too?”
It was never good to underestimate Asami Sato. Sure, she looked all girly girl, but beneath the silk was a will of steel. She grinned at his robot. “Properly badassed, I’m impressed. And I’m willing to believe you if you’re willing to believe me, but you can inspect her if you want.”
"you want you can check mine out. I’m willing to trust you though.”
She rested her hand on the head of her bot. She didn’t want him to think she was a push over.
There were protocols that should have been in place for a proper robot battle, but in all honesty, Newt just wanted to get to the robot carnage. So he’d decided to tentatively place his faith in her that she hadn’t cheated so he could get right to it. Besides, if she’d cheated and won, the battle wouldn’t count and the victory wouldn’t be lost to him. It was no skin off of his nose.
“No, let’s just get right to it,” he said. “I don’t have a ring set up, but let’s just try to keep them here in this parking lot. We don’t need them escaping and rampaging throughout the city. First one to explode loses.”
He grabbed the controls for his bot and flipped the switch, instantly bringing the robot to life. It hummed a bit as the electricity coursed through its circuits and joints. Newt pushed on a few of the levers to make sure (for the hundredth, thousandth, millionth time) that they’d work.
“Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be,” Asami said under her breath. She turned her bot on and stepped back. “If it goes that bad I’ll cover the damages. This was my idea anyway!”
Her bot whirled to life, clacking pincers on one hand and spinning up a saw on it’s other arm. Fortunately for any bystanders, it’s target was Newt’s bot, and nobody else!
And exactly like Asami had hoped, it crushed it.
