Finn Mikaelson was one of the last people Veronica was expecting in Orange County. She never even knew his family lived in the area. It was nice to see a familiar face though. It had been way too long since the last time she had seen him. Years. They had a lot of catching up to do.
Unfortunately her client before lunch had kept her a little long so she was running late. She rushed into the restaurant spotting Finn already waiting for her. “Hey,” she said as she reached the table, hanging her purse on the back of the chair. “Sorry I’m late. Meeting ran long,” she apologized taking her seat.
Veronica Mars was also the last person that Finn had expected to see in Orange County. They had met while Finn was living in Virginia, but unfortunately they had lost touch when they had both gone their separate ways. Now though they could have a chance to catch up and become friends again so long as he was able to keep control over his vampiric nature and not try and eat her. That would be incredibly bad.
They had decided to meet for lunch and Finn had gotten there first, so when Veronica did show up, he smiled, “It’s quite alright. Good meeting or bad meeting?”
“Neither, well I guess the fact that it ran long makes it bad, but it was neutral for the most part.” She shrugged picking up the menu and glancing it over. “Have you been here before?” Veronica hadn’t been in town too long, a little over a month. For the most part she just did takeout or fast food. She hadn’t actually sat down at a restaurant more than twice lately.
“That’s good to hear.” Finn wasn’t going to pry too much into what her meeting was about, simply because he wasn’t that sort of person. He wasn’t nosey with the exception of his family or a patient or if there was a legitimate reason for him to be, “I came here with one of my brothers not too long ago.” Finn had figured that since they were having lunch as friends, someplace too formal wouldn’t be right for them, so he had chosen pub restaurant that he and Klaus had gone to not too long ago.
It was a good thing Finn didn’t ask. It wasn’t like Veronica could really talk about her meeting. Lawyer/client privilege and all. “Great, then you can recommend what to get?” As if on cue the waiter approached. Veronica decided to just go with a water to drink, she would order food when he came back with their drinks. Once he was gone she turned her attention back to Finn. “How many brothers do you have again?” She remembered him saying he had a pretty large family at some point, but she couldn’t quite remember how many siblings. It had been a few years, so that was understandable.
“Four. I’m the oldest. We have a rather large family,” Finn said, taking a sip of his water once the waiter left after taking their orders, “So, have you been enjoying Orange County? Have you found everything alright?” He recalled how much had changed in the seven years that he’d been gone and how despite having grown up there, Finn still found himself getting lost after he’d moved back.
“That must be chaotic.” Veronica didn’t really know what it was like, considering she was an only child. She had no clue what having just one sibling was like. “It’s strange.” How else could she describe it? Hopefully Finn wasn’t another one of those crazy dream people. “But yeah I’ve been finding everything fine. I have a good sense of direction.”
“It could be at times,” Of course even now, when they were all mostly grown, it could still be chaotic depending on the situation. “That’s good. If you ever need help finding anything, don’t hesitate to ask. Some things have changed since I lived here last, but I’ve been back long enough that I think I’ve got a good handle on everything now.” It was hard to believe that a whole year had gone by since he’d moved back to Orange County.
“Thanks. You’ll be the first call I make,” she gave him a small smile as the waiter returned with their drinks. Veronica ordered herself a bacon cheeseburger, because why the hell not? She was never really the type to watch what she ate. The blonde did as she pleased. “So how has it been? Being back?” there was a hint of concern in her voice, she knew he had had some issues in the past.
“It’s been...good. For the most part.” He could have done without the becoming a vampire part of course, but he was still glad to be back to have the opportunity to be with his family, “It’s been different of course. I spent so much time away and so many things changed while I was gone. I’m still not on fantastic terms with my parents, but things are good between myself and my siblings.” For that, he was thankful.
“Sometimes time apart can be helpful,” she shrugged. Veronica wasn’t exactly on the best terms with her mother, but she was still closer than ever with her father. That was never going to change, even when they had lived on different sides of the country. “But at least you have your siblings, family is important.” At least that was how she felt about her dad, she didn’t know exactly what it was like to have siblings.
Finn nodded, “I do get along better with my mother than I do with my father, but that goes for most of my siblings.” Of course, knowing what he did about the dreams and what he was prepared to do for his mother did make things a little different now. Then again, he wasn’t entirely sure if the distance he was putting between him and his parents had to do with the dreams or with what he was now. “I’m very grateful for my siblings. If it weren’t for them, I don’t think I would have moved back here.” That had been his main reason for moving back to California. He’d missed so much and had so many loose ends that he needed to fix things desperately.
“Well it’s good you have them then,” again Veronica really had no idea what it was like. But she did know that she wouldn’t know what to do without her father. “I’m closer with my dad.” She added as the food came. Her mother was pretty much dead to her. But that was enough of that subject. It was time to dig in. And with that she took a large bite of her burger.
Finn nodded in agreement as the food arrived and took a few moments to add whatever he needed before taking a bite. He waited another few moments before speaking again, "So where is it that you're working now?"she had briefly mentioned her current job on Valarnet and when she's arrived, but hadn't really gone into any details.
“I work as a defense attorney” she replied taking another large bite of food. Her job really didn’t pay that well, but she liked the idea of helping those that couldn’t really help themselves. “It’s pretty fulfilling work,” although there were times where she was sure her client was guilty. That was the only downside.
“That has got to be tough at times.” Finn had seen various lawyer shows and knew that the defense wasn’t always innocent. “Then again, my job isn’t always easy either.” Having been where a lot of the people Finn saw were, helped him understand why they did what they did, but at the same time, it made his continued recovery difficult and being a vampire made it all the more difficult.
“What are you doing?” she took a sip of her drink before another bite of food. It was clear Veronica had been ravenous. Still she couldn’t believe she hadn’t even thought to ask what Finn did.
“Drug rehab counselor at Phoenix House.” As difficult as the job was at times because of his past experiences, Finn liked his job and it was because of his past experiences that he felt like he was able to help. Able to provide some insight for his patients and give them hope.
Veronica was impressed. It took someone pretty strong to go from being in rehab himself to being a counselor for it. “Good for you,” she finished off the rest of her food, glancing at her phone. “Crap, I should get back to work soon,” she frowned as she waved over their waiter for the check. She did like her work, but sometimes a longer break would be nice.
Finn had just finished up his own food when Veronica glanced at her phone and he nodded. He’d known this likely wouldn’t be a long lunch, but he was glad to have gotten to catch up with the other woman and now that they were both in the same city again, they would likely see one another again at some point, “Of course. And lunch is on me this time.” Before Veronica could say a word to argue it, Finn handed his credit card over to the waitress before she even handed them the check.
