Celaena was quite looking forward to this visit. Any excuse to see someone else’s wardrobe. Knocking on Lucy’s front door, she waited eagerly to see her friend’s face. And her clothes.
Lucy had been ridiculously excited by the wardrobe once she’d explored it a little with her brother and Caspian and had known exactly who she wanted to share it with. She’d called Celaena and invited her over to look at her wardrobe. She hadn’t however told her what the wardrobe led to and couldn’t wait to see her face.
“Celaena” she grinned as she opened the door and let her friend into the house out of the cold. “How are you?” she asked hugging her briefly after she closed the door.
“Lucy! I’m good, cold, but good,” Celaena joked as she returned her friend’s hug. “You? Apart from having a magnificent wardrobe, of course. I’m very proud by the way,” she said as an aside as they went into the house.
“Oh you just wait” Lucy grinned, “I’m good thanks. Really good actually. Guess I’m lucky being used to colder weather” She led the way upstairs after taking Celaena’s coat and hanging it up.
“Yeah, well, since my Dreams started I haven’t really been a fan of cold weather,” Celaena said fairly quietly as she handed her coat over. Following her friend excitedly, she let Lucy take the lead. “Where did you get this wardrobe from then?” she asked as they walked.
“I’m sorry” Lucy said, her friend didn’t talk about her dreams much though Lucy was always more than willing to listen. She had a feeling they were rather uncomfortable ones. “Well actually it’s the wardrobe from my dreams”
"Not your fault, I mean unless you're someone who can control the weather," Celaena joked and playfully shoulder bumped her friend as the walked. "Your Dreams?" She asked, admittedly a little disappointed. She had been imagining an exquisite and imported piece of furniture. Beautiful and expensive, with high quality wood and gorgeous sculpting. "Where does it come from in your Dreams?"
“Not part of my repertoire as far as I know” Lucy smiled. “Don’t look like that, it’s lovely” she assured her friend, “In the dreams I find it in the old house we were staying at while we’re playing hide and seek and it transports me to a different land” She didn’t say anything else for now, wanting to see Celaena’s reaction first. Opening the door to her room she let her friend go first.
Celaena’s eyes lit up as she entered the room and gazed at the wardrobe. It was everything she’d imagined and more. It looked like an antique and the carving on the doors was stunning. “Lucy, this is amazing,” she told her friend in awe, reaching out to run her fingertips along the tree carved in the front. “So it just...appeared?”
The wardrobe was beautiful and Lucy hoped it would stick around because she’d love to use it as a wardrobe. “Yep. I woke up and it was there” Lucy nodded, “Then the cat disappeared in there so me, Peter and Caspian had to go find him...” she trailed off to wait for the reaction to that.
“Wait a minute...you lost you cat in there?” Celaena asked, not quite believing it to be true. Her own wardrobe was a huge walk-in one and they’d never lost any person or beast in there, so how could this, although large, yet significantly smaller one get a cat lost?
“Mmmhmm. We found him. Kind of. He was a little different. Come on, I’ll show you” Lucy said taking hold of her friends arm and pulling her into the wardrobe quickly. Pushing past the coats and clothes until her hand hit snow and she looked back at Celaena with a grin, “This is going to blow your mind” she laughed before tugging her into Narnia.
“Wait..wha?” Celaena gasped as Lucy pulled her into the wardrobe. She pushed the fur coats out of the way and trusted Lucy as she led the way. Just when she expected to hit the back of the wardrobe, the coats disappeared and suddenly she was in some kind of winter wonderland. The ground was covered in snow and there was a chill in the air as she gazed around at the frosted tree and a...lamp post. “Where the hell are we Lucy?” she asked in wonder.
Lucy laughed delightedly, “Celaena, welcome to Narnia. The land of my dreams” she said dancing around a little, “Isn’t it amazing?”
Celaena gave a little chuckle as she saw Lucy dancing in the snow. “Narnia,” she tested the name out on her tongue. “Is it always like this? Cold and snowy?” she asked. “And what’s with that?” she gestured to the lamp post in the clearing.
“No, not always. It’s all part of a spell cast by the wicked snow queen but don’t worry she’s not here. The only people we’ve come across are Santa Claus and Aslan - the lion version” then she tilted her head as she looked at the lamp post, “You know I’m not sure about that”
“There’s a lion out here? Isn’t it a bit out of their comfort zone?” Celaena asked, puzzled at the thought of seeing a lion in snow rather than the desert. “Now Santa Claus and a wicked snow queen I can understand,” she laughed, reaching out and touching the lampost, the metal cool under her fingertips. “So how big is this place?”
“Yeah, his name is Aslan the same as our cat. But like I say it usually isn’t this cold” Lucy explained, “Well it’s pretty big. You up for a little exploring? Don’t worry I know it well we won’t get lost”
“Of course!” Celaena replied excitedly. This place looked great! “But uh, would it be ok if I grabbed a thicker coat from the closet before we go?” she asked, pointing back to some of the warmer clothes.
“Oh yeah, definitely. Grab whatever you like” Lucy said, she was wearing a thick jumper and layers having known they were coming here. She really should have insisted Cel keep her coat on.
Celaena grinned and turned, making a beeline for the closet. She quickly searched through the clothes and found a jacket. Slipping it on, she turned back to Lucy. "Lead the way," she smiled.
“Okay” Lucy agreed with a grin, “So Aslan will probably just turn up randomly and start talking to us, did I tell you he can talk here?” she asked as they walked.
“Uhh...no, you didn’t mention that,” Celaena replied, quite perturbed by the idea of a speaking lion. “He’s a...friendly lion, right? Not likely to eat us?”
Lucy laughed, “He’s very friendly. Likes giving obscure advice but he is lovely. He’s a wonderful friend”
Celaena huffed a laugh and looked at Lucy with a shake of her head. “The lion’s a friend? Only you…” she grinned. “How did you meet him? Why does he talk? How does he talk?” she asked, trying to figure out how the structure of a lion’s mouth would allow him to talk.
“Of course. Aslan is amazing” Lucy smiled, “I met him in the dreams when I came through the wardrobe and he talks because he’s the great lion. The lord of Narnia, so he kind of has to”
“Lord of Narnia, huh? Sounds like a pretty cool guy...er...lion,” Celaena shrugged as they walked. “So does he just...wander around in the snow, randomly encountering young girls in the wood? Is it just you who comes here in the Dreams?” she asked.
“He is. And actually I met a faun called Mr Tumnus first and it’s me and my brothers and sister who come here. All through the wardrobe from Mr Kirke’s house when we get sent there during the war. It’s all really rather fascinating”
"You were sent away? From home? Which war?" Celaena asked curiously. Lucy was English but she didn't know all that much about British history.
“Oh yes, sorry” Lucy said, “During World War Two a lot of British Children were evacuated from London to the countryside where the bombs dropped less often. We were sent to an old man’s house called Mr Kirke and that was where I discovered the wardrobe. Of course my siblings didn’t believe me at first”
“Oh god, that’s awful,” Celaena replied quietly. She knew all too well what it was like to not have a family. At least, not her original family anyway. Her adoptive parents were amazing and gave her practically everything she ever wanted and they loved her dearly but she had always wondered what it would have been like to grow up with her real parents. “What was the place you were evacuated to like? Was Mr Kirke...nice at least?” she asked. “Did you ever go back? Home, I mean?”
“It happened during the war” Lucy said, she’d learnt all about it in school back in the UK, “It was a very large house and Mr Kirke was quiet, he was a nice old man but kept to himself mostly though he did seem to believe me when I talk of Narnia. My siblings don’t to begin with you see. I’m not sure if we get to go home. My dreams haven’t gotten there yet”
"That must have been hard, being sent away like that," Celaena said, thinking it was almost worse than knowing your parents were dead. The not knowing must have been tortuous. "Do you think Mr Kirke knew about Narnia then?"
“It was necessary” Lucy said, “It was hard times and that was the only way to be safe. It was what our parents wanted” It had just been a simple fact of the time. “I think he might have. I don’t know enough yet”
“How old were you in the Dreams?” Celaena asked, reaching out a touching a branch covered in snow. Despite there being snow all around, it didn’t feel all that chilly. Her hands weren’t frozen by a chill wind nor her cheeks red. It was absolutely pleasant for a winter wonderland. “What sort of things did you get up to in Narnia? It was just you to start with, right?”
“I was eight” Lucy replied, it was true it never felt cold in Narnia despite the eternal winter. At least not properly cold anyway, “Well when I first came here I had tea with a faun called Mr Tumnus”
“Ok, so that’s the second time you’ve mentioned him,” Celaena grinned. “Tell me a bit about him. He’s a faun, right, so is that...half goat half man?” she frowned, trying to remember her mythology correctly.
“He’s in my dreams a lot. He was kind to me” Lucy said, “But yes half goat, half man and he wore a red scarf too. He was supposed to report any humans to the White Witch but he couldn’t do that to me so he took me back to the wardrobe”
“Why did he do that? And why would he need to report any humans to this White Witch? I thought you said Aslan was lord of Narnia,” Celaena frowned.
“Yes he is but the White Witch took over when Aslan left for a while. So she declared herself queen and made it winter”
“Well she sounds pleasant,” Celaena remarked, gazing around them for a few seconds. “So, what do you do for fun around here?” she asked with a grin and bumping her Lucy’s shoulder with her own.
“Well usually there are others but the only one we’ve seen around is Aslan, when he shows up. Of course I could show you where Mr Tumnus lives, he’s not there but it’s still pretty cool” she offered.
“Well?” Celaena grinned slyly at her friend. “Let’s go!” she took off running, not really caring if she were going in the right direction and wanting Lucy to chase her.
