Ever since she had found the ring setting on her library shelf, it had been difficult to relax. More difficult to relax. Without her work to distract herself, Helen was restless, and her still-healing injuries limited her options for releasing pent up energy. When she finally gave into her aching ribs and shoulder, sinking onto the sofa with a faint wince, she found herself staring at the ring again, nestled in its box on the table next to her.
How had it gotten here? What did it mean? Why now?
While it was strikingly similar to her true engagement ring, this ring could not have been her own. She had checked. Multiple times. Even if she hadn’t, the differences are as alarming as the similarities. She had no doubt this was the ring from her dreams. The thought terrified her.
However, it was the conflicting feelings it brought to the surface that she found most unsettling. She didn’t love John. She had once, of course, but those days were long past. Someone else held her heart, now. But in her dreams, there was only John, and she loved him entirely.
Then there were the nightmares.
Closing her eyes, she thought of anything but John.
