Who: Gwen and Jane What: New Years Where: Stark Tower When: New Years eve Rating: Complete Status: Low
Jane hadn’t ever really been to a New Year’s party. Once in college but it hadn’t really been her scene. She and Darcy usually stayed in and watched the ball drop and eat ice cream, so she was pretty much relying on Gwen to lead the way on this one. Nervously brushing her hands down the front of her dress, she waited for Gwen to join her at the front door to Stark Tower.
Gwen knew that Jane was a bit nervous about going to the Stark Party for New Year’s Eve, so she was running a little early. Hopefully there would be a lot of people to sing with and drink with. Michael was performing, so Gwen didn’t have to worry about him tonight.
She showed up in a cute party dress and broke into a grin at the sight of Jane there. “Happy New Year! Well… almost.”
“Hey, happy New Year,” Jane replied, smiling awkwardly and again brushing her skirt down nervously. “Did you have a good Christmas?” she asked
Gwen moved forward to give Jane a quick hug in greeting. “Yes! It was nice. Quiet. How was yours? Let’s go inside where it’s a little less freezing.”
Jane accepted the hug and then they moved into the vestibule of the building at her suggestion. “Yeah, it was fine, I went a stayed with my aunt and uncle for a couple of days. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them,” she shrugged, tucking her hair behind her ear nervously and casting a quick glance up towards to where the party was taking place. “I’m not too dressed up am I? I haven’t been to one of these things in ages,” she asked worriedly.
“That’s nice.” Gwen said, nodding. They moved further into the building, toward the ballroom-like room where the majority of the party was starting. “No, I think you’re fine. I might be a little under-dressed, actually,” Gwen admitted sheepishly. “Especially since Michael is playing tonight.”
“Michael’s playing? That’s great,” Jane smiled. “I think you could have turned up in a paper bag and he would still only have eyes for you,” she gently nudged Gwen with her shoulder as they walked. “It must be nice to have someone who’s so besotted with you!” she mused, looking at the doors to the party. There was music and hubub, hopefully Jane could remember what it was like to be a normal young woman at a party. How to dance and sing without embarrassing herself too much.
Gwen laughed, blushing, and shrugged her shoulders. “I suppose that’s true. I’d only have eyes for him even if he was wearing a paper bag, too.” She led the way to the coat check and turned over her jacket. “It’s good. I like it. I’m happy with Michael.” She was, too. It was more comfortable, more happy than she’d ever remember having been before.
Following suit, Jane handed over her jacket, keeping her bag slung over her shoulder. Taking her ticket, she smiled and thanked the man behind the desk before following Gwen again. “You’re uh...not going to run off with him half way through the night and not come back are you?” she asked, seeing the throng of people.
“I doubt it. But we’ll see how the night goes.” Gwen said, giving Jane a wink. “Besides, there’s bound to be more people here to hang around with than if we were in some dive bar. I’m sure Stiles would like some company. And Pepper and Tony. It’s not as if you don’t know anyone here.” Gwen was trying to be encouraging. “Come on, let’s go in.”
“I know, I know, it’s just...been awhile,” Jane shrugged, knowing she was being silly. “I’ll be fine. I need to get out and meet more people,” she smiled at Gwen with more confidence than she felt.
“Well, tonight will be a good start.” Gwen said, grinning, and wrapped her arm around Jane’s to lead her into the party.
