Clary hadn't quite known what to expect when she got Izzy's urgent text. Now she was here, she half-expected to see demons and vampires pouring out of the door of the Bakery. She opened the door carefully only to be greeted by Isabelle herself.
“Clary! Thank the angel you’re here” Izzy said as soon as her parabatai stepped through the door to Baxter’s bakery. Grabbing her hand she pulled her into the back of the store, “I’m not sure how it happened but well look” she said letting Clary see for herself. Cookies and pastries were baking themselves, glasses and dishes were washing and drying and it essentially looked like a scene from the Sorcerer's Apprentice.
“Woah!” Clary gasped as Izzy took her hand and pulled her through the shop. “What’s going on?” she asked with a little laugh as they moved. “I tho…” she trailed off as she looked at the room. “Oh my god…” she said slowly, taking a couple of steps into the room. “How did this happen?” she asked in amazement, taking in all the seemingly magically controlled activities.
“I’m not entirely sure. I mean I’m not a warlock, I don’t have magic. I wished for everything to run smoothly while Audrey was away but that couldn’t have caused this right?” she said as she looked at Clary.
“You made a wish?” Clary asked with a smile, reaching a hand out to touch the sponge currently washing a dish up. “Like on a star or something?” she smiled as the cleaning continued even as she touched the plates, then pulled her hand away.
Izzy nodded, “Yeah you know the other night with the shooting stars?” she said, “It was then. I mean it wasn’t serious it was just one of those in the moment things and now...this”
"Well Iz, that'll do it," Clary chuckled, looking back over her shoulder to grin at her friend. "It's the OC, if weird shit's going to happen anywhere, it's going to happen here and wishing on a star? Well that sounds exactly like something that would make weird shit happen here," she told her. "It's pretty cool though, kind of like the Sorcerer's Apprentice," she grinned and moved over to one of the ovens where some muffins were baking and peered in at them.
Izzy moaned, “I knew I shouldn’t have said anything. But I just wanted things to go well. To make Audrey proud” she sighed before laughing a little, “Don’t say that Clary, you know that doesn’t turn out well in the end” she said though there was a little grin on her face.
“Yeah, but it’s awesome in the meantime,” Clary chuckled, turning to take in more of the self-managed kitchen. “But why would you want to make a wish like that? You already make Audrey proud. Why else would she have left the shop in your hands?”
“Well, I can’t cook in the dreams. At all. I know that. But what if that starts to bleed over like the shadowhunter abilities? I don’t want to let Audrey down because of that” Izzy admitted, somewhat uncomfortably since she didn’t like admitting to any kind of weakness or worry.
“I’ve heard of people gaining skills from the Dreams, but I’m not sure you can lose a skill because of them,” Clary mused. “You’ve not been feeling any less...cooky or anything have you?” she asked.
Izzy shook her head, “No, not at all. But I never felt that different before getting all the shadowhunter skills. I guess...I just love this job a lot you know? I don’t want anything to possibly ruin it”
“I know how much you love this job and if the worst comes to the worst, and I stress the word if,” Clary held up her index finger to Izzy as she came and stood in front of her. “Then we’ll pool together and get you some cooking classes,” she smiled at her friend and took another quick glance at the room. “Either that or I’ll have to create the ‘I’m an awesome cook’ rune,” she joked.
Laughing Izzy grinned, “You are crazy but I’ll hold you to that rune creation if it comes to it” she said before hugging Clary. It wasn’t something she did often but this warranted it.
“Umph!” Clary couldn’t help it, as the full weight of Izzy’s gratitude enveloped her in an unexpected hug. Giving a little laugh, she responded, glad to have allayed her parabatai’s fears somewhat. Hopefully she could create that rune for Izzy, just in case. “I can only try Izzy,” she told her friend, patting her on the back. “Now, is there anything I can do to help?” she asked as she pulled away.
Izzy laughed at Clary’s response, she knew it was slightly unusual behaviour for her but she was just so relieved and glad she had her parabatai here to help her. “Not unless you know how to stop this?” she said still amused and kind of overwhelmed by everything happening in the kitchen.
Clary winced as she glanced around the room. “Sorry, not a clue. I’d probably say just to let it run it’s course anyway,” she shrugged. “Have you asked Magnus about it? He might have some ideas if it’s really freaking you out,” she suggested.
“Okay, well I guess since it’s not causing any trouble” Izzy nodded slowly, “I didn’t want to bother Magnus, I don’t want him thinking I come to him just because of magic or anything”
“Yeah, at least you didn’t get any menacing magic,” Clary joked optimistically. “I think Magnus would rather you talked to him about it before trying anything to reverse it. It might make things worse and let’s face it, he is our foremost expert on magic,” she told Izzy.
“He is” Izzy agreed, “But I wouldn’t know where to start on trying to reverse it so maybe I’ll just leave it for now. I’ll contact him if it takes a turn for the worse” she promised.
“Yeah well, let’s hope it just stays at this level and doesn’t get any weirder by OC standards,” Clary smiled. “Are things ok with you and Magnus then?”
“Oh yeah” Izzy nodded smiling, “Things are fine. It’s just I had a snippet of a dream recently and he was kind of annoyed about being called on like he was our ‘personal warlock’ and I’d hate for him to feel like that here” she explained.
"Ah, what sort of stuff have you asked him about here? Has he said anything about it before?" Clary asked curiously.
“Nothing really but I know he has a few magical friends. He’s not said anything but then he hadn’t in the dreams either”
“Don’t forget though that Magnus here isn’t the same as Magnus in our Dreams. That Magnus was hundreds of years old and hadn’t been thought of particularly very well by the Clave for practically all that time. I find him much easier to approach here,” Clary shrugged, reaching out for a muffin that was cooling on the side. “I’d say just ask him how he feels about being talked to about stuff like this,” she suggested kindly.
“You’re right I know. He’s great here, we get along really well” Izzy said nodding, it was probably just because the dream was so recent that she was overthinking it.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to push the point I just...we have enough trouble and strife in our Dreams I don’t think we need to make any harder for ourselves here,” Clary shrugged as she started to pick at the muffin with her fingers and eat it in bits. “Could you only imagine how we’d be if there were Demons running rampage in the city?” she gave a little laugh at that.
“That would be great” Izzy said, “I mean not great...but kind of fun. I’d get to use my whip and kick some ass. Jace would think it was awesome” which was probably not the reaction Clary had been looking for.
Clary rolled her eyes and gave a little laugh at that. Jace and Izzy were so similar, but Clary would be grateful for the peace they had while they had it.
