It was a crisp Fall day and Rebekah decided she should probably enjoy a few more of them outside before it started to get a little colder. Granted, it never snowed down here in Southern California, but it still got a little colder and therefore not as much fun to be outside. Besides, she also wanted an excuse to take Natalia out for a walk in the park, so she was more than happy to pack things up in her car and drive out to the nearest one. It was the middle of the afternoon and quite lovely as she set up the stroller and set Natalia in there. She put a few goldfish crackers and a couple of her toys on the tray and they started out for their walk.
Davina had a similar idea as how to spend her time after school that day. Not having a car of her own or a license, Davina was forced to have Marcel drive her most places, but considering the time of day, he was working, so instead of going straight home, Davina got on the bus and headed towards the park. She would call Marcel later to pick her up from the park or even Henrik, if he wasn’t busy, but for now, she was going to do her homework and maybe do some sketching before then. Getting off the bus, Davina began walking along a path, looking for a good place to settle down, however as she walked she spotted a blond woman with a baby carriage, which caused her to stop dead in her tracks, her heart beginning to beat quickly.
Her mind was wandering as she continued down the path, but she managed to catch a glimpse of a young lady coming down the path as well. There was something familiar about her, but she couldn’t quite pin her finger on why. It was a little frustrating and she only grew more confused when the woman stopped dead in her tracks and was just staring at her. Alright, a little creepy now. The confusion was evident on her face as she continued to approach her and she tilted her head slightly.
As the blond continued towards her, it didn’t skip Davina’s notice that she was clearly different than the Rebekah from her dreams. That Rebekah had been demanding and scary just in the way that she carried herself when she’d come to try and take Elijah’s body back, but just from the way this version of her moved, she seemed completely different. Not only that, but Davina couldn’t imagine the Rebekah from her dreams with a baby. As she got closer, Davina realized for the first time that she was just standing there, staring and she felt her cheeks flush slightly. This was not the way Davina had envisioned meeting any of Henrik’s siblings and since there was a very big chance that they’d see each other again, Davina couldn’t simply shrug this off and pretend that she hadn’t been staring at Rebekah. So, when she got close enough, Davina, opened her mouth to speak, “Um, hi. Sorry. You’re Rebekah, right?” Cause that didn’t seem strange, right?
“Yes….. Do I know you?” Rebekah’s confusion continued to stay on her face. There was that nagging sensation in the back of her mind that wanted to place this girl, but it wasn’t happening just yet. When she was questioned by the girl she stopped the stroller and came to rest behind it. It was a little unnerving that this girl knew her name, but she didn’t know hers. Well, that’s why she had come to stop and maybe they would be able to figure this one out.
“Oh, um, no. I’m a friend of your brother. Of Henrik.” Not knowing if Henrik had ever mentioned her to Rebekah, she didn’t want to say girlfriend or anything like that just in case he didn’t want his family to know that he was sort of dating someone. “I’ve….I’ve seen pictures.” She knew that some of Henrik’s siblings had dreams, but considering Rebekah’s reaction to seeing her, she didn’t think that the blond woman had dreamt about her yet. “I’m sorry for staring.”
“No, that’s totally fine, it happens. Especially if you’re friends with Henrik. We have a large family, so there’s a lot of photos running around of all of us,” She tried to remember if Henrik had mentioned a female friend. She thought he had a girlfriend, but she wasn’t completely sure anymore. Sometimes you forget things when you have 5 other brothers and she certainly hadn’t met this girl before, “But nice to meet you formally, I’m Rebekah and this is Natalia.”
“I’m Davina. It’s nice to meet you too.” Yeah, she definitely wasn’t like the Rebekah in her dreams. That Rebekah would have tried to snap her neck or something by now. “Yeah, I’ve heard about your family and brothers. That must have been nice, having a large family.” Was she really talked about her family? Rebekah in real life might have been different from Rebekah in the dreams, but Davina was still a little nervous around her and Davina had no way of actually defending herself if something did happen.
Rebekah didn’t have those kind of unresolved anger issues in this life, thank god. “It’s not too bad. At least I know I have people to talk to whenever I want to and there’s usually someone to hang out with. Just wish I had been more in middle instead of at the end. Older brothers are the worst,” a laugh followed up that statement as she reached down to adjust Natalia’s outfit, “At least she will be the oldest girl if we have more kids.”
“I’m an only child. Well, technically.” Davina had had foster siblings and there was every chance that she could have biological siblings out there, considering she had absolutely no idea what either of her parents were up to, “It’s just me and my foster father out here.” She had always wondered what it’d be like thought to have siblings that she was actually close to the same way she was close to Marcel.
“How is that? Kind of relaxing? I used to dream about running away and being an only child somewhere else, but then I realized I wouldn’t be able to handle not having my family around. They get under your skin,” she joked before grabbing some crackers for Natalia to eat, “would you like to walk with me? I’m just going to do a loop around the pond.”
“It can be lonely sometimes.” Davina could have lied or not answered, but she didn’t see any reason to do either of those two things. Rebekah seemed much nicer in real life than in the dreams and the fear she’d felt upon first seeing her was diminishing, “Only if you don’t mind.” She didn’t want to impose on Rebekah’s time with her daughter, who she now recalled Henrik had mentioned a few times. When he’d mentioned a niece, she’d never really put two and two together.
“Nah, not a bother at all. Besides, I should get to know Henrik’s friends,” She knew that Davina was more than likely something more than a friend, but until Henrik flat out told her that she would probably remain mum about the fact. Why scare the girl now? This way they could get to know each other without that older sister looming over it. She started to push the stroller down the path once again, “Sorry, it gets lonely. I can understand that. Do you spend a lot of time with friends instead then?”
Davina fell into step beside Rebekah and the stroller as they began walking along the path. It felt bizarre to be so close to someone, who, in her dreams would likely kill her without a second thought. “Back home….before I moved here, I had more friends.” In a few months it would be a year since she’d moved to California, which was now home. New Orleans had been home a year ago, but now home was Orange County, “I’m still working on the friends thing here, but I do have a few that I hang out with every now and then. They’re more into the party scene than I am.”
“Oh, that makes sense. It can be hard to make a good group of friends in a new place. And it’s hard when you’re young and everyone wants to party. I totally understand that. I’ve know a lot of people that would probably be doing all the time and I’m just like ‘Hi, I have a child.’ and it just gets frustrating,” Rebekah commented, “But I’m sure you’ll find true friends that will enjoy the same things as you. Are you in school or anything like that?”
Davina nodded in response to what Rebekah was saying to show that she understood then nodded once again when asked about school, “I’m in high school. I’m a junior at Laguna Beach High.” She adjusted her bag on her shoulder as they walked along the path, “I’ve only been there since March so it’s still new to me.” Of course she’d gotten used to being in a new school, but she still considered herself the new girl since she had only spent a few months there the previous school year.
“Are you enjoying it so far? I’ve only really seen things about Laguna Beach from that horrible tv show that was on ten years ago. Hopefully they’re not being total snobs and ignore your presence. And a junior? Are you already looking at colleges and things like that? I remember how stressful that used to be,” Rebekah was so glad she was almost out of college because trying to get in had been just as stressful. But it was still a good thing to do and she would suggest it to pretty much everyone.
“It’s different from my school back in New Orleans, but at the same time, it’s kind of the same. Does that make sense?” Sure there were lots of things that were different like the students, teachers and atmosphere, but at the same time, it was a school and the basics were still the same more or less. “I’ve started looking at a few. Mostly ones that offer art as a major.” She knew that she wanted to do something with art, but not exactly what yet. She figured she would have plenty of time to figure that out though.
“I think all schools have that basic similarity - popularity hierarchy and basic structure to it. But yeah, every school is a little different. And art major? That could be fun. My brother, Nik, does art.and teaches now. Is that something you’re possibly interested in?” She wasn’t quite sure what you would do with an art major except for work in a museum, teach, or just work on your own art. But she never looked down on any kind of major because it was someone’s passion in the end.
“I don’t think I’d want to teach,” Davina said as they continued walking, “I don’t think I’d be good at that. I would like to showcase my pieces in a show at some point though.” Davina had gone to multiple art shows and always wondered what it’d be like to see her art up there on the wall and to have people commenting on it.
“That would be a lot of fun. You’re in a great place for showcasing your art. There’s such a great art culture here that I’m sure you can easily find a place to do that,” Rebekah commented with a smile. If Davina was a good as she was making herself seem then she was sure that it wouldn’t be hard to find a place. The arts were alive and well in the LA area and even if it was a smaller gallery that would still be impressive.
“I don’t know if I’m even good enough.” Davina wasn’t simply being modest. She worried about how her art would be perceived as well as was always of the mindset that everyone else was better than her, “My art teachers and foster father think my pieces are good, but they have to say that, don’t they?” She smirked a little bit at her attempt to make a joke.
Her joke did earn a small smile as she looked over at Davina, “I know it’s hard to build that self confidence, but I’m sure you’re good. Not all people have to say that your stuff is good. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of teachers out there that will speak your mind. If anything you can always talk to your art teacher one-on-one and make sure she’s telling you the truth. I bet you can find a place to showcase your art. Don’t sell yourself short.”
While it was a little strange to be talking to Henrik’s sister like this, having just met her, Davina was glad to have someone who was impartial and didn’t actually know her to talk to about this sort of thing. It might not seem like a big deal to some people, but it was to Davina, “Thanks. Next time we see each other I’ll have to show you some of my stuff,” While she did have one of her sketchpads with her, Davina didn’t want to bombard the other woman with her sketches and drawings right off the bat. “Then you can tell me what you really think.”
“Sure, that would be great,” Rebekah answered honestly with a smile. She did enjoy art and she also loved seeing things from people she knew since she didn’t really have much talent in the way of art. When she finished speaking she realized they had already walked all around the pond and she was back to where they started, “Oh wow, that was a quick walk. Thank you so much for keeping me company, but I think we should probably head back home. I think she fell asleep.” Rebekah leaned over the edge of the stroller to check and Natalia was fast asleep.
“Oh, it was no problem at all. It was really nice to meet you,” Davina smiled as she glanced at the sleeping toddler as well. She was going to have to tell Henrik about meeting his sister and how nice she was as well. “Have a good rest of the day.” She may not have gotten to do what she’d originally come to the park to do, but she could always do her homework at home.
