Jane worked her way up to Gwens office, aiming to grab the other girl for a spot of lunch. Smiling at a couple of people she’d gotten to know over time as she moved through the corridors, she made it to Gwen’s office for one o’clock and poked her head around the door.
“Hey, surprise! I’m here to steal you away for lunch!” she grinned at her friend.
Gwen looked up from some paperwork. She broke into a smile at the sight of Jane there. “Hey, Anna.” She added, mentioning the Halloween costumes. Though hers had turned into a bit of a disaster. What with freezing Stark Tower and all. “...god, perfect timing. My stomach was just beginning to grumble.”
Jane grinned at the mention of their Halloween mishap. “How are you…Elsa? Apart from hungry?” she asked, stepping into the office while Gwen got ready.
“Just wrapping everything up.” Gwen said, closing down her computer with a few clicks of the keys, and then putting her papers into a file folder to lock in her desk drawer. “How’ve you been?” It’d been a little time since Halloween, Gwen had been a little bit of a hermit.
“Eh, busy, like I always am,” Jane shrugged. “Busy, busy, busy,” she repeated awkwardly, more to herself as she looked around the office. “The cleaners turfed me out of my office last night. So...that was fun,” she joked, despite it being true.
“Sounds like you need a vacation.” Gwen stood from her desk to get her jacket and purse from the coat rack. It was one of those stand-alone kind that looked almost as if a lamp-post and an umbrella bred. She pulled her jacket on. “Where are we going for lunch?”
“Not really a vacation, more a life in general,” Jane replied with a little, shy smile. “There’s a little sushi bar just down the road I thought we could try out. Sound ok?”
“That sounds fine to me.” Gwen said, grinning brightly. The pair of them headed out into the hallway and toward the elevator. “What do you mean… life in general?”
“I just mean I need more of a life, y’know, outside of my lab and my office,” Jane shrugged as they walked, stuffing her hands in her pockets. “I just...I don’t know, I guess Merlin’s wedded bliss got me thinking is all,” she said as they made it to the elevator.
“Ohhh.” Gwen said, moving around the desk to join up with Jane and make their way into the hallway. “Yeah, Merlin and Audrey, having babies and everything. It’s so weird.”
“It is isn’t it,” Jane mused as they stepped into the elevator and she pressed the button for the ground floor. “I’ve just been...I don’t know...lonely I guess. You’re busy up here, Merlin’s busy getting ready to be a dad, Darcy and Thor left...I don’t have anyone to talk to about anything I might discover,” she shrugged and stuffed her hands in her pockets and leaned back against the elevator wall.
“You know you can always talk to me,” Gwen said, frowning a bit. “And… I don’t know, maybe I can introduce you to the rest of the house.” She had three roommates as well as Michael now.
“I know, I know, I just...I’ve just been thinking a lot lately I guess,” Jane shrugged as the lift arrived at the ground floor. “Meeting people would be great. I’m uh...not great at it though,” she admitted. “Too much time in my lab and living on my own I guess,” she joked even though it was half true.
“Well, maybe you just need more practice.” Gwen offered, smiling warmly. “I mean, it’s like a muscle. Social skills. You need to keep working at them to keep them working.”
Jane grinned at that. “Well my muscles are most definitely atrophied,” she joked, pushing the front door open for Gwen to head through. “You’ll have to be my social fitness instructor,” she laughed as they headed out onto the street towards the restaurant.
Gwen moved with Jane through the doorway. “I’ll see what I can do. You’ll have to come to the house. Oh, what are your Thanksgiving plans?” Gwen asked it before she realized what she’d done. She probably should have asked Michael and the rest first before inviting Jane over. But the invitation was good. The Glass house was very welcoming.
“Uh...Thanksgiving? I uh...I don’t really have any, just me and my data with a visit from Mr Ben and Jerry,” Jane joked as they walked. The restaurant wasn’t far and she’d booked a table for them. “Normally it would have been me and Darcy watching Christmas movies and stuff but now...” she shrugged as she told her friend. She held the door open to the restaurant for her friend and followed her in, giving their name to the waiter who then seated them.
“Well, you should come over! You have to have turkey and stuffing.” Gwen said, smiling warmly as they moved back to sit in the booth at the restaurant. “We could do Christmas movies, too. There’s no limit to what we can do.”
“Really? Your housemates won’t mind?” Jane asked once they were sat. “I’ll have a coke, please,” she told the waiter with a small smile.
“Nah, of course not.” Gwen gave her friend a bright grin. Then she turned to the waitress and nodded. “I’ll have the same, thanks.” As the waitress wandered off to get their drinks, Gwen shrugged her shoulders. “Michael says the more the merrier, so I’m sure he won’t mind.”
“If you’re sure they’ll be ok with it,” Jane replied, feeling excitement and trepidation at her new plans. “So uh...tell me some more about Michael,” she suggested.
“I’m absolutely sure.” Gwen said, nodding. She leaned back in her chair and gave a happy sigh. “Michael’s … he’s handsome. And he’s kind. And he’s ridiculously funny. He’s a musician, too, and his career is starting to take off. You’re just gonna love everyone.” He wasn’t as smart as Merlin, or as rich as Tony, but he was good people. Gwen was hopelessly in love with him.
“Sounds like you’re smitten,” Jane grinned at her friend knowingly. “I’m not going to be a third wheel, am I?” she asked.
Gwen laughed. “I am. And you won’t be. There’s a whole house of people. You’ll be one of the eighteen wheeler truck’s wheels.” She beamed. “Now I’m excited.”
