Who: Caroline Forbes and Severus Snape
When: Early December sometime
Where: Ha-Hacienda
What: Christmas Shopping
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
When Severus mentioned making sure Daisy had a great Christmas, of course Caroline had offered to help him shop for presents. Sure he had a daughter, but Caroline still remembered what it was like to be a little girl. She knew all the things little girls wanted and was sure she would find some things that Sev missed.
Caroline spotted a pink castle doll house. “Oh my god” she said picking it up and showing it to Sev. “I wish I had one of these as a kid.”
Severus had never been a little girl. He didn’t know which dolls went with which. He hadn’t really had action figures as a kid. His childhood was horrible, and he wanted to make sure that Daisy never had any of the experiences that he’d had when he was young. Perhaps he overcompensated a little. His budget for the holidays was proof of that.
He stepped over, raising an eyebrow at the plastic house. “...it’s a castle.” He said. Like Hogwarts. Sort of. Much smaller and less intricate. The staircases probably didn’t even move.
“Yes! I just had a plain doll house. I didn’t have a castle!” the excitement in Caroline’s was evident. She placed the castle in the cart Severus was pushing. It was her job to pick things out. Sev had to do the actual buying and cart pushing. He could always pick things out too of course. But that was Caroline’s area of expertise.
As they continued down the aisle she spotted some Shopkins. She picked up a few packages of those showing them to Severus. “Aren’t these just adorable?” she asked him showing him the miniature grocery store items with cute little faces. “They didn’t have these when I was a kid.”
Severus took hold of the package of tiny, supermarket items. He raised an eyebrow. “They look like pencil toppers.” He could remember his childhood friend, Lily, collecting these. In this world, though. Not the Dream world. “I think they might be too small to have around David.”
“Oh, right,” Caroline was so busy thinking about what to get Daisy that she forgot David as just a baby still. Hell she almost even forgot there was a David. Fail. “Well maybe just be sure she keeps them away from David? Or you could wait to give them to her until you think David is old enough,” she had no clue when that would be. Caroline knew next to nothing about babies, raising kids, and all that.
“We could try and keep them away from him.” Daisy had her own room after all. She could keep her toys in there up and out of David’s reach. It was a questionable plan, but he couldn’t keep Daisy from getting toys that were age appropriate for a four year old. “...Let’s see if there are larger toys for her.”
“Got it. Big toys,” she could handle that. Next she spotted some My Little Ponies. “Oh look! There’s Twilight Sparkle, and Rarity, and Rainbow Dash,” she called out each one by name as she picked them up and put them in the cart. Not even bothering to check if Severus was okay with buying them all. Before he knew it Daisy was going to have almost a full collection, if Caroline had anything to do with it.
Sev had seen the show, of course. But the only one who stood out to him was the big, red, big brother pony. The one that didn’t talk. He nodded, watching them fall into the cart. “You are planning on coming by and playing ponies with Daisy, right?”
“Of course!” It was kind of nice to relive her childhood through Severus’s daughter. It was also nice to see an actual father in action. Of course she did have that when she was younger, but her dad turned out to be a total dick. Severus wasn’t like that at all and she couldn’t imagine him ever abandoning his children. “We will have so much fun.”
“Good.” Then they were allowed to continue. Sev knew that he wasn’t very good at playing ponies. Not now that Daisy was older and wanted different voices for the different characters and everything. He pushed the cart forward. “That’s what she needs right now.”
“Oh my god!” Caroline exclaimed pretty much out of nowhere, but the best idea just came to her. “You know what you should do? I’ll babysit Daisy and David and you can dress up as Santa for them!”
Snape let out a sudden bark of laughter that completely caught him off guard. He lifted a hand to cover his mouth, though a very uncharacteristic grin had settled on his lips. It took him a moment to compose himself again. “....thank you for the offer, Caroline, but… that will never happen.”
Caroline couldn’t hide the shock on her face when Severus burst into laughter. She couldn’t remember ever hearing him laugh before and definitely not like this. She didn’t even know he could laugh. “What?” she asked innocently. “You’d make a good Santa. Daisy would love it.” Okay she couldn’t exactly picture Sev dressing up, but still she wasn’t going to let it drop that easily.
“No,” Severus said, shaking his head a little. He was still chuckling. Sort of. At least, smirking to himself at the idea of donning a fat suit and a beard. That wasn’t exactly his style. “But perhaps if Neal returns in time from his trip…”
“Well I guess I can settle for that,” she replied, still not ready to fully give up on the Santa thing. “We should probably head out before I make you buy the whole store.”
Severus nodded, turning his attention to the cart as they headed up to the register. “You might bankrupt me if we keep up like this.” He teased, in a much better mood now after the Santa comment. Maybe getting him to laugh was a good thing.
