It had been a fairly busy day and Rose had about an hour left of her shift. With the holiday shopping and the coming of finals, her place of work had been a flurry of people, all looking for something to keep them going throughout the day. Rose was happy to help, if not for the fact it made the work day go by faster. She glanced down at her watch before flashing a smile to the next person in line.
“ ‘ello,” she said, her accent very obvious in greeting. “What can I getcha today?”
Caroline had planned to do a ton of studying over her the few days she got off for Thanksgiving. But of course that didn’t happen, with work and the actual Thanksgiving meal and then helping her mother decorate. Finals were coming up awfully fast which meant she really needed to buckle down and study. And probably not sleep. Hence her trip to Starbucks. It was probably already her third coffee of the day, but who was counting.
Of course Caroline noticed the girl’s accent right away. How could she not? “I’ll have a grande vanilla latte with an extra shot of espresso.” Usually she would order it iced, but with the snow lately there was really no point in that. “Did you move here recently?” she couldn’t help but ask, with the girl’s strong accent and all.
Rose grabbed one of their holiday cups, writing those strange abbreviations on it as she placed her order. She grinned at her question, looking up at her as she continued to scribble. “Kind of obvious, innit? Yeah, moved here a couple months ago and was lucky to find this job.” She gave a sarcastic roll of the eyes. “But better to be here in sunny California then boring Marlow.” She glanced outside, realizing it wasn’t really that sunny anymore. “Well, at least I thought it would be sunnier!” She smiled with a small shrug of her shoulders.
“Name?”
Caroline was about to mention the fact that it was actually snowing when the barista commented on it. “I know what you mean. Like who ever heard of snow here?” Of course it snowed in other places in California, where there were mountains. But not really Orange County. Of course by now Caroline was used to all the weird shit that happened here. “How do you like it here? Minus the snow,” she said with a small laugh.
“Caroline,” she said and looked at the girls name tag out of habit, noticing her name was Rose. The blonde liked to know who she was talking to. “Thanks Rose.”
“I was definitely surprised to wake up to it!” Rose said in agreement, scrawling her name on the side of the cup. She hesitated before adding a little smiley face and heart to it as well; she seemed like a nice girl! It wasn’t every day someone actually took a moment to speak to the barista without having their order mixed in with it.
She laughed as well, giving a small shrug of the shoulders. “It’s nice and I like it. I’m must upset at myself for falling into the same pattern. I moved out here to get away from the mundane, but it seems that shoppe jobs like this are meant for me. I can’t really get away!” She gave Caroline a face, before smiling once more. “Hopefully I’ll find something else. Or go to school so I can do something else.” Another shrug. “As long as I make it through the holidays!”
“Well is there anything you really want to do? Like a career you always dreamed of?” That could help. Caroline was big on setting goals and working towards them. That way she wasn’t just doing things for the sake of doing them. It definitely made getting through school a bit easier.
Rose glanced behind Caroline and saw no line. That was a nice surprise and meant she could chat with her a little bit longer. “I dunno really. It would be neat to travel, but other than that, I don’t really have a passion for anything.” She made a face. “I guess that came off wrong. I dunno, I was never someone that absolutely loved history or writing or something like that. It was more just…feelings. Like I’d love to travel and explore other places. Maybe something outdoors?” She gave a shrug.
“What about you? What are you studying?”
Caroline had always wanted to travel herself. She had barely ever been out of California. “I know what you mean. It would be so amazing to see different parts of the world, experience different cultures and all that. I definitely want to do that,” and thanks to the fact that she was a vampire, she had an eternity to do so. “I don’t really know what career that would be, other than like a flight attendant or pilot or something,” she laughed. “Psychology.” Caroline had always been a people person. Why not find out what made them tick?
“Exactly!” she said, getting a bit excited. It was rare that people wouldn’t want to travel, but it was always fun to find something in common with the other person. “There are so many places to go and visit, even here in the states! I just gotta find the time...and money for that reason.” She rolled her eyes. She nodded her head. “Yeah, I figure about that. I don’t have enough knowledge to be a tour guide or anything like that. Plus, that seems too boring...like you would have to know a lot about one place, but only that one place. But flight attendant…maybe.” She had never really thought about it actually. How did one become one? She made a mental note to look into it.
“That sounds brilliant!” she said, her face lighting up. She may not know what she wanted to do with her life, but she always liked hearing about other people. “There’s so much you can do with that too! I hope you find something you’re really passionate about.” She grinned.
“So did you grow up here?” she asked, glancing behind Caroline to check on the line again. It seemed that Caroline was her lucky charm because there was still no one waiting to give Rose their detailed drink list.
“And you would have to learn a lot of history. Boring dates and all that,” Caroline made a face. “No fun. But a flight attendant could be fun. Sounds more exciting than a tour guide.” Caroline could tell that she was honestly thinking about it. That was pretty awesome, that a perfect stranger was actually listening to her advice, or well idea. Maybe she could do this whole psychologist thing after all. If she could get through finals that is.
“Yeah, lived here pretty much my whole life. I did do a semester in San Francisco though, but I got too homesick,” she shrugged. Caroline had been so caught up in their conversation she hadn’t really even thought about the fact that their might be people in line behind her.
Rose laughed, happy to hear that someone else thought along the same lines as herself. “Yeah, I think you’re right! Flight attendant it will be!” She grinned, giving a shake of the head. It sounded crazy, yet doable at the same time. Rose Tyler, flight attendant…
“Did you like growing up here? It seems like a good place to be raised...like, a lot of stuff happening. I grew up in a very small towns and it was boring!” Whenever she felt like she was a complete failure, she always had to remind herself that she had taken the leap to come out here in the first place.
Rose heard the door open and sighed; it was like the playground bell ringing to signal the end of play time. “We’ll have your drink up in a moment,” she said, going back into professional mode. She hesitated with her next question, but decided to plow through; when in Rome! “Um, do you think I could give ya my number? Going back to school has been an idea I’ve tossed around and I’m newer to the area so it would be nice to have someone I could touch base with...unless that’s really weird, then nevermind!” Caroline seemed nice enough that she hoped it hadn’t come off too weird to ask such a thing. But she couldn’t think of another way she could meet people than at work so she’d had to take the risk.
“Yeah I did, but I had great friends, that helps. Still I would love to see more places.” She really needed to broaden her horizons, but she was just so busy. After college maybe. There was really no rush she had eternity. “Well hey at least you are out of there now,” that was Caroline for you, always looking on the bright side.
“Sure!” she replied already pulling her phone out of her back pocket to input Rose’s number. It wasn’t weird for Caroline at all, she loved meeting new people and making new friends. “What’s the number?” she asked. Then she would get out of the way for the next customer. She did have some studying to do after all.
Rose couldn’t help but beam when Caroline agreed. She knew she felt a good vibe from her! She read off her number to her, happy to have potentially made a new friend. “Just gimme a text so I have yours! Thanks for the chat today Caroline! Definitely been the highlight of the day!” She grinned, giving her a wave good bye. “I’ll be in touch too yeah?” She gave her another cheeky grin, before turning her attention to the next guest in line. “Hello! What can I getcha today?”
“No problem. Nice talking to you too!” Caroline replied happily, already typing a text to her new friend as she walked off to the side to wait for her order.
