Where: Irisa’s house
What: Revelations and confrontations
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Alucard had let himself into Irisa’s house when there had been no response to his knocking. And after a brief look through the building it had become very apparent that Irisa’s father wasn’t around and hadn’t been for some time. Alucard felt incredibly angry with the man he’d never met and somewhat annoyed with Irisa for keeping it a secret. Although he was more concerned and somewhat impressed that she’d managed this long.
Taking a seat at the kitchen table he faced the door and awaited her return from school.
Irisa had had an alright day. She’d kept her head down, stayed out of trouble and made it home without picking a fight. Sighing as she reached the front door, she dug around in her pocket for the front door keys when something caught her eye. She couldn’t exactly describe what it was, but something was different and she simply knew someone had been in her house.
Quietly dropping her bag, she lifted the plant pot on the right of the door and pulled out a small sheathed blade from underneath that she kept there for just such a scenario. Call her paranoid, but she hadn’t lived for so long on her own without thinking about this sort of thing. It had been a present from Nolan and it felt...fitting to have it there protecting her house.
She cracked the door open and tried to peer inside. She couldn’t hear anything from the room beyond and pushed the door open to cautiously enter the house, stopping dead in her tracks at who she saw sat in the kitchen watching her.
“Shit.”
Alucard knew exactly when Irisa arrived home, waiting for her to enter the room he was glad to see her instincts were good. She had even armed herself which was somewhat reassuring.
"Indeed" he said raising an eyebrow, "Care to tell me how long you've been living alone Irisa? And where exactly is your father? Do you know?"
Irisa stood upright, and sighed heavily in defeat under his gaze. Turning back to the door, she picked up her bag and replaced the knife under the plant pot. On her knees, she dropped her head and took a minute to breathe before she headed back into the house and shut the door behind her. Standing facing the door, she answered him quietly. “Nolan’s been gone four, maybe five months. He sends me money every week. Currently he’s in Idaho, chasing a lead for a bail jumper,” she paused and turned her head slightly to glance at him over her left shoulder. “He didn’t want me to miss school.”
Alucard waited patiently, he knew she’d tell him what he wanted to know. He listened as she spoke, watching her closely. “How considerate of him” there was no hint of sarcasm in his voice but he was far from serious. “You cannot stay here alone Irisa. No matter how capable and competent you are. You are a minor and it’s my responsibility to make sure you’re okay”
“I’m fine by myself,” Irisa insisted, pushing away from the door and marching into the house. She dropped her bag in the hallway and headed into the kitchen to get herself a drink of water. Keeping her back to him, she opened the tap to fill the glass she’d pulled out of the cupboard. “I’ve been by myself before and in worse situations. I’m not some stupid little kid with no idea what I’m doing,” she told him fiercely, then took a drink from her glass and turned the tap off.
“I have no doubt you have but the fact remains that now I know I cannot simply allow this to continue. I will locate Nolan and speak to him but in the meantime you will move into the house with Integra and myself. At the very least we can ensure you are eating properly” Because yes Irisa, Alucard had noticed all the takeaway cartons in the trash.
“Nolan’s doing what he has to do to keep us alive,” Irisa defended her adoptive father steadfastly. “This is how it’s always been. Granted, never for so long before, but I’m getting older, I’m more capable than I used to be and he trusts me to take care of myself,” she turned to face him, leaning back against the sink. “Besides...you and Integra don’t want me hanging around,” she said, keeping her eyes cast down and swilling her water in her glass.
“Whatever the reason the point still remains that you are a minor and cannot be permitted to continue staying here alone” Alucard told her before frowning, “Don’t talk nonsense girl, Integra adores you for a start and I would not spend so much time training you if I objected to you in any way”
Irisa sighed and dropped her chin to her chest, glaring at her feet. “You’re not gonna let this go, are you?” she asked rhetorically, already knowing the answer. If she’d known it would have been her last night yesterday, she would have celebrated somehow. Ice cream maybe.
“Of course not” Alucard answered, “Pack some things and do whatever you need to before we leave. I’ll let Integra know you’ll be moving in for a while” he told her. Because Irisa was right in thinking last night was her last night here.
Great. Another move, another house. Not like she wasn’t used to it. She and Nolan moved every other month it seemed when she was growing up. It hadn’t helped alongside her stunning personality when it came to making friends. Even though she was used to her own company and amusing herself, she had to admit to being a little lonely in the big empty house. “Fine,” Irisa relented tersely. “But I get to come by here at least once a week to check up on the place,” she told him.
“You can have as much freedom as you like as long as you let us know where you are if you’re going to be late at any point” Alucard told her and by late he meant obscenely he wasn’t going to badger her but there would be no wandering in at midnight like there wasn’t a problem. Sleep was important especially when you trained like they did.
Irisa gave a quick nod of thanks to that, tilting her head in his direction. "And training?" She asked. "Will you increase it?"
Alucard considered her a moment before nodding, “If you think you can handle it then I think we can do that”
“I wouldn’t have asked the question if I couldn’t put up with it. And if i’m living with you then the time I spend travelling to train is suddenly freed up,” Irisa pointed out with a hint of a smile on her face.
Smiling and nodding Alucard agreed, "Alright then. We will increase training. Though if your school work suffers that will change" he warned.
Irisa quirked a little smile at that. If he knew what her schoolwork was like at the moment he would be hard pressed to spot if or when it got any worse, she mused internally, but she’d keep that to herself.
