He kept Brandon on the phone, but he didn't force the man to speak. Ben listened for sounds: sudden movements, breathing; the breathing imperative, or else he would immediately have hung up to dial 911. It was the only thing that could have moved him to do anything with his phone other than press it against his ear. He even drove one-handed.
But just because he didn't force Brandon's response did not mean Ben was silent himself. He asked questions, questions that sometimes seemed to have no meaning or reason: what's it like outside; what time it is?; things like that--words to keep the line between them tight, and not slacken.
His back was in excruciating pain. So much so that when Ben reached the front door, he his knock was faint as a whisper. "Brandon," he called out, hoarsely.
