Jane had just finished her sandwich and settled back for a ten minute snooze after setting the alarm on her phone to wake her up. The automatic light had turned itself off and the break room was endarken just enough to have a quick kip. She was just starting to doze off when the door opened and the light came back on. Jumping awake, she looked to see Tony Stark coming in the door.
Tony Stark was looking for something. He didn’t often come into this room. But he was on a hunt. He moved to the vending machine with purpose, quickly, gave an elated “Eureka!” and pulled a credit card from his pocket. One swipe, and a red wrapped candy bar was falling down into the collection bin. He reached in, grabbed it, and tore into the thing right then and there.
Then he realized he wasn’t alone in the room. Tony turned and saw Jane at the table. “100 Grand?” He asked, offering her the second piece out of the wrapper.
Jane laughed and shook her head. "No thanks, I'm good," she declined with a smile. "You still have to pay for that sort of thing? " she asked.
Tony shrugged. He took another bite, then had to chew a lot before he could answer. “I like feeding into the system.” He turned a chair around and sat down in it, facing the table. “Working on anything new and exciting?” He asked, then bit again. God, these were the best candies ever.
“Not really,” Jane replied, rubbing her hands over her face. “Although I was thinking of working on getting a life,” she joked.
“Hey, that’s always a good thing to add to your to-do list.” Tony finished the first chunk of 100 Grand from the wrapper and pulled out the second. “Any ideas how one might go about doing that?” He bit into the candy.
“Uh...no, actually,” Jane gave a little chuckle. “Not having had one before I’m not entirely sure where to start to be honest. Any advice?”
“No idea.” Tony said, still chewing. “I’m not exactly Mister Popular anymore, either.” He added. Sure, when he’d been a party animal and spent nights with lots of different ladies, he’d been fairly popular. But now that he was more settled, a little older, a little more mature? People liked to spend time with him because he was Tony Stark. It had nothing to do with him... did it?
“Pick some of your friends and make them hang out with you a lot.” That’s what he did with Steve and Kevin, anyway. And Pepper, too, but they were sleeping together. And head over heels in love. That didn’t count.
“Friends?” Jane gave a little smile. “Ok, so my friends consist of Sam Carter; my ex professor,” she said, counting them off on her fingers. “Merlin who’s about to become a dad with his new wife and Gwen, who works here and about as hard as I do so we barely ever see the light of day,” she told him. “Not many options and I’m not the...go out clubbing and see what happens kind of gal,” she gave a little shrug. She knew she wanted to improve her social life, her increasing Dreams about Thor made her yearn for more than just talking and being friends with someone. But she didn’t really have any idea about how to go about it.
“So, what kind of a life are you looking for?” Tony asked. “You could always pick out whatever interests you and do that. Book club, bowling league, knitting group, whatever.” He suggested, giving a shrug. “I was in the Chess club back in school. Met some pretty awesome nerds that way.”
Jane tilted her head to the side as she considered his ideas. “I suppose I could brush up on my chess. Don’t think I’ve played for a few years so I might be a bit rusty, but that’s why you go to a club I guess,” she shrugged. “And knitting...I did it when I was a kid but I don’t know how much I would remember now. Besides, isn’t that a more…female dominated interest?” she said quietly. “Not that I’m against that sort of thing but I’m just...y’know, not,” she babbled, casting a little, nervous smile in Tony’s direction.
Tony raised an eyebrow, playfully. “You’re looking for something co-ed, are you?” He asked, unable to stop the grin from tugging at the corner of his lip. “I see.”
Jane could feel the blush start to rise in her cheeks at that and she gave a little innocent shrug. “Well, you know...it gets lonely in my lab,” she fiddled with the ends of the scarf that had fallen in to her lap. “With Darcy gone and Thor gone I just…” she shrugged. “I guess I’m little lonely,” she admitted quietly.
“Oh, yes.” Tony said, nodding and grinning in a teasing way. “I understand. Lonely.” Nudgenudgewinkwinksaynomore. “Well, I’ll put some feelers out and see what I can do.” Maybe Pepper had ideas for Jane. Poor kid. She was smart and beautiful. She deserved to have someone in her life.
Jane could feel herself blushing bright red as he teased her. “I’m not even lonely for…that, I just, I don’t know, I’m missing a companion I guess,” she tucked some hair behind her ear.
“Uh huh.” Tony knew what that translated to. “Like I said. Feelers.” He lifted his hands and wiggled his fingers in the air, then stood from his chair and tucked his hands in his pockets. “I’ll let you know if I come up with anything.”
“I’ve heard about your ‘feelers’, and that they’ve been suitably tamed by Miss Potts,” Jane teased as she reached for her own drink. “But thanks for the ear,” she said genuinely.
Tony nodded. Not exactly what he was thinking about, but he grinned anyway. And nodded. “Anytime. You know where my office is.” He gave her a salute, then headed out the door.
