Effie was ridiculously excited to be working. This was the first time she’d ever really had her own job. She knew that almost all of the money that she’d gotten from selling off the Old Man’s things was going straight to the Loan Shark, Ganon, but that didn’t mean her life was over. Or that she owed him anything. She’d just have to negotiate. There was no way she could pay off all of the Old Man’s debt. She’d have to declare bankruptcy, or something.
Anyway, she’d picked up work pretty easily at the shop. It was mostly clerical stuff, but she also had a bunch of input in fashion choices and decisions. Sometimes it was good to have a set of untrained eyes on a new project, to make sure it was coming off correctly.
She was working the front desk, answering phones and addressing envelopes for an hour or so today while the front desk girl was on lunch.
Haymitch had told Effie she didn’t need to work, he’d take care of her of course, but since she had been he had noticed a change in her. She seemed more determined and even more cheerful than normal. He was glad for it, she was the sort of person who should always be happy and smiling. It wasn’t right when she was sad or upset.
He’d decided to surprise her at work with lunch and had brought all her favourite things so they could have a little picnic in her little office. He’d been treated to a tour of the shop the first time he’d picked her up and she’d been so happy with the little office. Entering the shop he smiled as he saw her, “There’s my girl hard at work”
Effie looked up and broke into a grin. “Haymitch,” she said, feeling warmth flood her chest at the sight of him. “What are you doing here?” She was at the bottom of the totem pole right now (okay, maybe a step above the front desk girl) but that was okay. She didn’t mind working her way up in the ranks. And hey, she even had her own office.
“Figured I’d bring lunch to my favourite girl” he said stepping forward to press a kiss to her lips, “That okay?” he asked with a smile just for her. Haymitch knew Glinda trusted Effie completely and was letting Effie prove herself simply so Effie could have that belief too.
“Aww.” Effie came out from around the front desk so that she could wrap an arm around his waist and lean in for a kiss. She smiled brightly up at him, lifting a hand to cup his cheek. “That’s absolutely okay. The front desk girl should be back any second, so I’m free.” Her hand found his. “C’mon, let’s go to my office.”
Linking their hands Haymitch followed her, as he always would. “This is cute” he said, as they entered the compact but nice office. “It even feels like you already” he commented noticing little touches that were definitely ‘Effie’.
Effie had done quite a few things. Curtains. Plants. Pictures on the walls. Well, what little walls there were. And the bookshelves held books, of course, but other nick-nacks. Definitely Effie.
She led the way into the room and cleared the desk so they could sit at it. There was enough room for them to sit side by side and still be able to eat. “I’m so glad you came by. It’s not lonely, or anything, but I always like a surprise visit from my favorite man in the world.”
It was cute and sweet and Haymitch couldn’t help but like it. Much like the woman herself.
“Good because I like surprising you” Haymitch said pressing a kiss to her lips before starting to unpack the treats. “How’s everything going? You seem to have everything in order and running nicely” he commented.
“Well, it was running fairly well when I got here. There’s a lovely young lady who does most of the website work. And I sit at the front desk sometimes. Honestly, I think Glinda was taking pity on me when she hired me. I’m not really needed, but I’m sure having a lot of fun. And I think I’m helping.”
“I’m sure she values your input. You’re a lot more capable and smarter than you think you are sweetheart” Haymitch told her, “I’m glad to hear you’re having fun though”
It was sort of ingrained into Effie to think that she was a trophy wife, and that’s the best she could do. She wasn’t sure why, but sometimes that’s what she thought about herself. A lot of the time. She sighed softly. “You’re so sweet. Thank you. Yes, Glinda and Elphaba have been wonderful. I’m having a great time here so far.” She started in on her lunch, thankful that Haymitch brought it so she wouldn’t have to figure out how to do it all on her own.
Haymitch definitely didn’t see her as a trophy wife, he respected her and liked the whole package. And he hoped that came across. “That’s good to know. You’re settling in well anyway, it already feels like you” he said gesturing around her office before starting to eat himself.
It came across. Effie couldn’t believe how lucky she was to have Haymitch in her Real Life. He was absolutely perfect. “You think so?” She asked with a grin. “Thank you. I just wanted to make sure to leave my mark.”
“You’ll do that no matter what you do” he told her, “I’m sure you’ll be running this place easily in no time at all” He could see her doing that and thriving too especially once her confidence got better.
Effie leaned over to steal a quick kiss from his lips. “You know exactly what to say to make me feel better.” Not that she’d been feeling bad. “I’ll figure out some way to repay you for this kindness.” She said, smirking suggestively.
Haymitch smiled into the kiss, “Glad to hear it” he said simply before raising his eyebrows, “Oh really? Well I have to say I’m looking forward to that”
“Maybe when I get home tonight.” Effie said, leaning forward to press a kiss against his scruffy jaw. She lifted a hand to tuck some hair behind his ear. “We’ll have some wine… put on a movie… cuddle up.” It sounded like the perfect evening.
It sounded perfect to Haymitch too. It sometimes surprised him how quickly he’d adapted to and enjoyed having Effie in his life. He wouldn’t have it any other way and couldn’t imagine being without her now.
“Mmm yes. Let’s do that” he nodded, “I’ll grab some wine on the way home” he told her before kissing her with a smile.
Effie grinned softly. She nuzzled her nose into his cheek for a moment, enjoying the scratchy stubble against her skin. Then she sat up with a sigh. “I should really get back to work, though. And last I heard, you have work to do, too?”
Haymitch almost whined but she did have a point, “Yes” he sighed, “I do. Sadly the company won’t run itself” Well it might but he liked being involved in it all if he was honest. “Not long til home time though”
Effie nodded. She felt similarly. Well, not about the company running itself, but more about how much she wanted to stay with him. But they only had a few hours left. Then they could go home and have naked time together. Effie stood. “No. Just a couple of hours. Don’t let your meetings run late, all right?”
Naked time was Haymitch’s favourite time, Effie had made it so ever since the first time they’d been together. “I promise I’ll be home on time, maybe even early, and I’ll have wine” he said leaning in for a kiss.
Effie returned that kiss. “Perfect.”
