What: Veronica is making herself scarce for Sharon and Remy’s date
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Veronica had decided to take Tom up on his offer of a guest room. Sharon had a date with Remy and although they were going out she had a feeling they would end up back at the apartment. Veronica may not like the guy, but she wasn’t about to be a cock block either.
After work she had stopped back at the apartment to grab a few things and talk to her friend for a bit. Then she was off to Tom’s. Of course since he was letting her crash at his place for the night, the least she could do was bring some dinner, so she picked them both up some Chinese food on the way over.
The blonde rang the doorbell, with a bag of Chinese food and her overnight bag in hand as she waited for Tom to come to the door.
Tom was in some pajamas. A white undershirt over some flannel pants. And don’t forget the slippers. He was wearing some moccasin-like slippers. This was casual wear. The kind of thing he wore when he wasn’t trying to impress. He had his silk pajamas, he had some other things, too, but tonight he was going for comfort more than anything. He wasn’t planning on going out anywhere. Just having Veronica over and ordering pizza. Maybe a movie. Hopefully some flirting. Possibly … more? Though, Tom had written her off. For the most part. She was becoming a friend. Dreaded friend zone.
He answered the door and broke into a grin at the sight of the bag of Chinese food. “Hey pretty lady. Lookin for a place to crash?”
Veronica was still in her work clothes, her pajamas were in her overnight bag, as well as her toiletries and a change of clothes. That was pretty much all she had brought with her other than the Chinese food. “I found one” Veronica replied making her way inside, not bothering to wait for Tom’s actual invitation in. “Unless you changed your mind about your offer. I’m sure I can find another gentlemen more than willing to take me in. Likely even better looking than you” she winked at him over her shoulder as she made her way into the kitchen.
“So are you going to show me the guest room before we eat? Or do I have to carry this around all night?” she gestured to her overnight bag still in hand.
God, that was hot. Veronica was hot. Coming in without being invited? Even though it was a formality, and she was welcome without him having to say so… it was still hot. Tom wanted her to make herself at home in his place. He gave a little chuckle. “Please come in.” He said to her back before closing the door behind her.
“Oh, of course. Here.” He took the bag of Chinese from her arms and set it on the kitchen counter. Then he motioned for her to follow him. “It’s down this way.” The guest bedroom was on the same side of the condo as his office. His master bedroom was opposite, with the living room and kitchen sort of between. Like an oreo--if the bedrooms were cookie and the kitchen was white, creamy filling.
The Guest bedroom had been professionally designed. It wasn’t used often. But it was cleaned regularly, and the bedding was practically brand new. Tom motioned for her to head in, then leaned against the doorframe and watched her.
“You know, you don’t have to spend the night all alone in the guest bedroom. There’s plenty of room where I sleep.” Smirk.
Veronica followed him through the condo, before she had only really seen the kitchen and dining area. She had no clue what the other rooms were, but the guest bedroom looked nice enough. It was obvious that it wasn’t used often. Everything looked new, she wondered if any of it had been used before. She had a feeling most people stayed in his bedroom, his next comment only confirmed her suspicion.
“I think I can handle it” Veronica replied setting her bag down at the foot of the bed. “I’m not scared of monsters under the bed” she teased. “I prefer them to men who want in my pants, no matter how charming they are” she had no problem calling him out on it. Wasn’t like he was trying to hide it anyways.
She made her way out of the room, brushing past him in the doorway. “We should eat the Chinese food before it gets cold.”
Tom held up both his hands in surrender. “Hey, just letting you know that options there.” He admitted, grinning. “And, can you blame me? They’re really nice pants.” That was all he said on the matter, though. He turned to head back into the kitchen, following after her. “Sure. Plates in the cupboard, silverware in the drawer.” Though he had a feeling she’d just root around until she found what she was looking for, anyway.
He liked that in a woman.
Tom was right, Veronica had already started looking for plates and silverware before Tom even told her. It wasn’t like he even told her which cupboard or drawer either, but it didn’t take Veronica to find it all. She handed Tom his plate and silverware. “Help yourself” she took some of the cartoons out of the bag setting them on the counter.
Veronica dished herself up some chow mein, fried rice, beef with broccoli (had to get some vegetables in) and pot stickers. She helped herself to a bottle of water from the fridge and sat down at the table, waiting for Tom to join her.
Tom pretty much just dished up the same as she did. Loads of carbs. He’d have to work it all off tomorrow. But worth it. Oh, so worth it. He moved to the table, and sat down with her to eat. A few minutes into the meal he got up to grab a water for himself. “So… Sharon and Remy, right?” He asked, sitting back down again. “...giving them some space?”
“Yeah. I’m not about to be a cock block” Veronica dug into her food. She wasn’t the type of girl to worry about calories and all that. “Oh wait” she said between bites. “I’m probably doing that for you. Sorry” she shrugged. She didn’t feel as bad about it with him. He probably needed to take a break now and then anyways.
Tom laughed. “I don’t have a girl over here every night of the week, you know.” He responded. He wasn’t as young as he used to be. He didn’t quite have the stamina for something like that. And, in all honesty, he was getting a little bored of picking up chicks in bars. Don’t tell anyone.
“Noted” she replied with a smirk. “Well now I don’t feel guilty” not that she really did in the first place. After all he had offered her the guest room. Of course she took him up on it. “Sharon and I found a place. We are moving the in December. So hopefully I won’t have to crash here too many more times.”
“Oh yeah?” Tom asked, then swallowed his mouthful. Charming. Seriously. “Where’d you find a place?” He added, before reaching for his water for a sip.
Veronica told him the neighborhood the apartment was in, before taking a few more bites of food. “So soon you won’t have a tiny blonde bugging you for a place to crash anymore. Disappointing I know.”
“It is, actually,” Tom said, completely honestly. “It’s nice having you around.” A girl that he’d pretty much given up on trying to impress. Or trying to bed. He took another bite, letting a comfortable silence fill the room for a moment. “Sharon makes a good roommate?”
“Yeah, she’s the best. Besides it’s not like this is the first time we have roomed together. I lived with her for three years back in college” why she was telling Tom all this she had no idea.
She finished off the food on her plate, going back to the counter for a second helping. “What about you? Ever have a roommate?” she called as she piled her plate with more food. She had a feeling the answer was no.
Hey, Tom was a good guy. He was unassuming, he was easy to talk to. Veronica was a great girl. So far he had nothing but affection and good will toward the blonde. “Oh, you two were roommates, huh?” Tom asked, breaking into a grin. “What happens in a dorm room stays in a dorm room?” He added, playfully.
Then he finished what was on his plate, too. “Yeah.” He didn’t need to get seconds now, though. He’d probably come back for a midnight snack. “Back in college. Lost touch with him, really. But his kid brother Hans is a good friend of mine now.”
Veronica sat back down at the table digging back into her food. “Something like that” she replied with a small smirk. “Sharon and I lost touch for a bit too” she said in between bites. “It happens” the blonde shrugged her shoulders. “But that’s cool you are friends with his brother now. Small world? Or did you already know him?”
“Oh, I knew him. He’s always been a good guy. He’s a whole lot better at keeping in touch than his brother is. Maybe that’s part of it.” Tom shrugged, leaning back a bit in his chair. All four legs stayed down on the ground, though. “I’m not always the best at keeping in touch. I just get… distracted.” He wasn’t sure why he said it like that. He was opening up to this girl. It was a little weird.
“Life happens” she took another bite. “I think the people you are meant to have in your life you will reconnect with, or not lose touch in the first place” but it did happen. People moved, lived across the country. Got busy with their separate lives. It wasn’t the end of the world. She took a few more bites before pushing her plate away. “Okay I am officially stuffed.”
Tom nodded. He liked that. It made it not his fault. Fate, or whatever, was at fault if he lost track of people. And that was less pressure. Less pressure was good. “Me, too.” He climbed up from the table to put the dishes in the sink and the leftovers in the fridge. “Did you want to watch a movie or something? I can leave you alone if you’d rather have some space.”
Veronica followed suit, getting up from the table and putting her own plate in the sink. “Depends. What movies do you got?” it was still early, not exactly bed time, but she could always get caught up on her reading as well.
Tom broke into a huge grin. “Come take a look at my collection,” he said, and ushered her into the living room. There were huge bookcases on either side of (possibly) the world’s largest television. He sat down on the sofa, still carrying his water bottle, and said, “Television on.”
The television came on.
Wasn’t technology effing amazing?
Veronica took a seat beside Tom on the couch. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes as he told the TV to go on and it did. Guys and their gadgets. “Too lazy to pick up a remote?” she teased. “Let’s see this movie collection of yours. See how impressive you really are.”
“That’s not even the best part.” Tom said, draping his arms along the back of the sofa. “Pick a movie.” His collection was extensive. There were a couple hundred movies on the shelves and in the drawers. But the movies themselves were all in the computer attached to the television, not in the boxes. So he could just tell the tv what to play, and it’d come on.
“Just say any movie?” okay that was a little impressive, but still, guys and their gadgets. “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” she said just to see if that would actually work, or if Tom even had it.
The computer attached to the television did its thing, then the movie came on. It was amazing and wonderful. Tom couldn’t stop grinning. “Fast Times at Ridgemont High it is. You just happened to mention a movie starring one of my favorite actors.”
Veronica had to roll her eyes at the ridiculous grin on Tom’s face. He was very proud of his voice responding TV. “Sean Penn?” she guessed settling back into the couch.
Once the movie was over the blonde was exhausted, not to mention in a food coma from all the chinese she had eaten. “Well I should get to bed” she said standing up from the couch, stretching. “The guest bed” she clarified, Tom didn’t need to be getting any ideas in his head.
Tom laughed. “Television off,” he said aloud, and the machines turned off. Then he stood. “Well, my bed’s pretty warm and comfy if you change your mind.” He offered, but had a feeling she wasn’t going to take him up on it.
