Jem hadn’t expected to be doing anything for Halloween other than study, but Will had had other ideas. He’d decided to invite Tessa over to watch movies and had insisted that they all dress up even though they weren’t going anywhere. Jem had no idea what Will or Tessa were dressing up as, but he had gone out and gotten a cloak and half mask, deciding to be the Phantom of the Opera. He was currently in his room, mask and cloak already on and he was playing the violin as they waited for Tessa to show up.
There was no way Will was going to let his best friend study on Halloween, he figured going out might be too much especially since the streets would be filled with kids and parties were likely to be crowded. And, in all honesty, Will wanted some time just with Jem and Tessa. He hadn’t expected them to agree when he’d suggested dressing up, part of him had expected to be in his Prince Charming costume while Jem and Tessa were in their jeans. Not that he would have minded of course.
Hearing Jem playing the violin he quietly entered his parabatai’s room and flopped down on his bed to listen.
Jem was so caught up in his playing that he hadn’t realized that Will had come into the room. Not only were his eyes closed, but his back was facing the majority of his room as he usually stood near the window when he was playing the violin. He played for a few more minutes, although, as far as he knew, it could have been half an hour, before he finally stopped and turned to put the violin back into its case. That was when he noticed his Parabatai, stretched out on his bed, “Oh, I didn’t hear you come in.” His white-silver eyes took in Will’s outfit, “A prince?”
Will loved to watch Jem play like this, when his best friend was unaware of being watched and looked so lost in the music. Jem was beautiful and it was moments like that which made Will's heart ache. He smiled that sweet slightly flirty smile when he was eventually noticed, "I know" he said simply before nodding and standing up, "It rather suits me don't you think?" he said turning, "Maybe it can be the prince who lures the phantom from his lair?" Will said holding out his hand. Magnus had suggested more obvious flirting and what better chance than with them both tonight.
Jem’s brows rose as Will held out his hand and he stared at Will for a moment before, reluctantly taking Will’s hand. Will flirted. It was the way that he was, so Jem wasn’t aware of the fact that Will was flirting with him. “If Christine could only just barely lure the Phantom out, what makes the prince think that he’ll be any different? You can’t even sing.”
“Slander” Will said with a laugh, “I might be able to sing. I could surprise you” he said linking their fingers as he tugged Jem out to the living room. He’d decorated it in a very Halloween style, cobwebs and decorations were hung up and things were littered around too. Pumpkin shaped bowls with snacks in and a pile of DVDs by the television. “And I’ll have you know that the Prince can be incredibly charming, honestly the Phantom doesn’t stand a chance. Everybody loves the Prince” he grinned.
Tessa had butterflies in her stomach. After her talk with Magnus and Myrcella, she had resolved to sit them both down together and try and explain how she had woken them up from the curse. However she'd taken her own advice and had a glass of wine when getting ready for some Dutch courage. Which may have multiplied into being the whole bottle in the end. Taking a deep breath and brushing down her clothes, she reached up and knocked on the door.
“I won’t hold my breath,” Jem had seen only the beginnings of the living room decorating when he’d come home a few hours earlier, before going into his room, but he was quite impressed at what Will had done since then. “I’m sure there are people who can resist the prince’s charms.” Jem was trying to do just that at that moment. It had been a few weeks since he’d talked to Jubilee about his feelings for Will and Tessa and he’d been trying to do as she said would be safest and get over his feelings, but Will wasn’t making it very easy.
At the the sound of the knock, Jem pulled his hand from Will’s, “That must be Tessa. I’ll let her in,” Turning away from Will, he headed towards the door, smiling when he opened it, “Happy Halloween, Tessa.”
Will nodded and let his hand slip from Jem’s albeit somewhat reluctantly but he followed his parabatai to the door, “Happy Halloween” Will echoed, looking around Jem.
Tessa looked up in surprise as both Will and Jem answered the door to her, staring like a deer in headlights. She licked her lips nervously as she looked between the two of them, suddenly finding herself at a loss for words. She could feel herself gaping like a fish at the two beautiful boys who held her heart, but everything she had planned to say to them.
As Tessa stared at them, Jem's smile faltered slightly, unsure about her reaction, "Tessa, are you alright?" He reached out for her arm in case something was wrong. It wasn't as if either of their costumes were scary so he didn't know why she would have had a reaction quite like this upon them opening the door.
Will moved to take her other arm, “I know we’re handsome but honestly Tessa are you swooning?” he teased lightly though anybody who knew him well could sense the tension under the words, he was worried too.
Tessa swallowed as she felt Jem’s hand touch her arm and heard Will’s cocky retort. The undertone of worry didn’t escape her notice and she realised she must have been presenting quite the sight to them both. “Wine,” she managed to say through suddenly dry lips. “Please,” she added, reaching for Will and letting them both draw her out of the hallway.
Jem nodded and went to the kitchen to get a bottle of wine. Neither he or Will were twenty-one yet, but while he had been living with Jubilee, she’d often drag him out to bars regardless and at some point he’d acquired a fake ID. He didn’t use it often, but for this evening, Jem had decided to get a bottle. Pouring a glass for Tessa, he brought it back out, along with the bottle and held the wine glass out to her, “Tessa, are you alright?” He was concerned, because he’d never seen her like this aside from the morning they’d woken up from the sleeping curse.
Will watched her closely in concern while Jem went to fetch the wine. He often forgot that the legal drinking age was different here, but he also had a fake ID since he enjoyed the occasional beer. He kept hold of her simply because he was afraid she’d fall over if he didn’t, “Maybe you should come and sit down” he said.
Tessa took the glass from Jem and took a large swallow of the wine it contained. Will had thankfully led her into their front room and she was glad for the hand on her arm for she felt she might fall over it not for it. Closing her eyes and savouring it, she took a deep breath and sighed. “Ok,” she said, looking at the two of them and setting the wine glass down on the coffee table. “Come, sit,” she took both of their hands and pulled them in the direction of the couch before indicating they should sit. “We all need to talk,” she told them, stepping back from the couch and looking down at them both.
Jem frowned slightly as Tessa spoke those five words. Five words were enough to cause Jem to worry about what exactly Tessa needed to talk to them about. Glancing at Will, Jem removed his Phantom mask and took a seat on the couch where Tessa had led them, “Is everything alright, Tessa?”
Will shrugged as Jem looked at him, he didn’t have a clue either, then he returned his gaze to the nervous looking girl in front of them, “You know you can tell us anything Tess” he added in what he hoped was reassurance.
Tessa opened her mouth to speak but found she couldn't with them both looking at her so expectantly. Closing her eyes, Tessa took a deep breath and all but blurted out to them "I love you." She couldn't believe she'd said it. She could feel what was remaining remaining of her colour drain from her face and she reached down to finish the wine Jem had given her, knocking it back in one go as she waited for them to laugh at her for being and silly girl or some such.
As Tessa spoke, Jem wasn't entirely sure he'd heard her correctly. Not only that, but which of them was she referring to? Surely she didn't mean both of them. Sure, they'd gone out on a date a few months earlier, but as far as he knew, there was nothing between her and Will. After a moment, he opened his mouth to say something in response, but nothing came out.
Will however was a little less silent in his confusion, “Uh which you are you talking about?” he asked her, “Because this could get really awkward quite soon”
"Both of you! If it were just one of you, don't you think I'd be a little more tactful about announcing it?" Tessa explained in a rush before taking a breath. "I don't expect either of you to...reciprocate, but after what happened when you were both asleep I did much soul searching and took counsel from dear friends. I could only come to this conclusion and I resolved to tell you both how I felt about you," she looked up at them after a breath brief pause. "So...begin your taunting; the girl who fell in love with two people at the same time and had to drink a bottle of wine to be brave enough to tell them," she gave a shy little shrug as she toyed with the wine glass in her fingers.
Both of them? She loved both of them? One would think that would help Jem with his own predicament, but it only made him more confused. No matter, before he could do anything else, like have a glass of wine of his own; why hadn't he brought out more glasses? He needed to reassure her, "I....Tessa, I'm not going to taunt you." He gazed at her with his silvery eyes not really sure what else to say. He didn't want to make things any more awkward than they already were.
“It would hardly be fair to taunt you when I’m in the same boat” Will told her, a rare flush appearing on his own face. “In fact you’re far braver than I am, I’m not sure I’d have had the courage to say it first even with a whole bottle of wine” There was little going on in Will’s mind except that perhaps he was dreaming or the OC was doing something crazy once more.
Tessa smiled gently at Jem as he spoke to her. She hadn't truly thought either of them would tease her...well, maybe Will a little bit. However, she hadn't been expecting Will to say that . Her head whipped around to look at him. "Wha...what did you say?" She asked quietly, sure she'd not heard him correctly.
That was the last thing Jem had expected Will to say and all he could do was stare at his Parabatai, silver eyes wide. Of course he felt the same way, but this was like a dream or something. To hear both of the people he liked admit that they liked him too and each other was not something Jem had ever expected. He wanted to say something in response, but again, the words wouldn't come.
Will, who never ever blushed, felt the colour flooding his face as both Jem and Tessa looked at him. “I, uh, I love you too. Both of you” he said, his hand rising to rub the back of his neck.
Tessa could feel a slow grin spreading across her face as she watched Will getting nervous and flustered with his admission. Will like this was terribly endearing and she was relieved to discover that she wasn’t the only one in love with two people at the same time. However, the other part of their triangle had yet to say anything regarding their admissions. Biting her lip, she chanced a glance at Jem. “James? Are you all right?”
Jem turned his gaze away from Will to look up at Tessa where she still stood in front of them. He knew that he had to say something now or chance making this situation even more awkward as well as hurt the two people he cared most for, "Um....yeah. I just...I wasn't expecting that. Either of those." He was more shocked about Will's admission. Surely he didn't mean it the way It sounded. Will probably meant that he loved them both as friends. As family. He couldn't have meant actual love. Could he?
Oh god. Had he just admitted his feelings to his parabatai only to find he didn’t feel the same way? “Right well this is awkward” Will said getting up from the couch because he felt that he needed to move, “I guess having two people admit they’re in love with you isn’t an everyday occurrence” he joked, though it came out flat, “But at least it’s done now right? You won’t have to hear it again” Mostly because it was humiliating enough the once.
“Will,” Tessa said quietly in concern as she caught him by the arm to stop his pacing. “Please, calm down. It’s just...a lot to take in, that’s all,” she looked back to Jem. “We all need some time to...to process this information,” she said, trying to sound confident but Jem’s lack of response was worrying her. She didn’t want to lose him as her friend over this, maybe she’d simply read the situation wrong with him. Disappointment rose in her throat, she really did love them both, maybe Jem didn’t believe her. Swallowing, she decided to take another chance. “Do you want to know how I woke you both up during that spell?” she asked, keeping her eyes downcast as she spoke, but keeping a gentle hand on Will’s arm.
Jem watched Will, knowing that he had to say something or risk making things very awkward between them and considering they lived together, it was even more important to fix things. However, Tessa spoke before he could respond and asked if they wanted to know how she'd woken them up. Of course after her announcement of her feelings it was pretty obvious; at least to Jem. "You kissed us. Didn't you?"
Will stopped when Tessa put her hand on his arm, he probably looked a little lost and flushed but he'd never done the whole feelings thing before and he was a little on edge. Much like Tessa must be feeling too. Jem wasn't just not responding to his declaration, he wasn't responding to hers either. He listened to them both, realising only after Jem spoke, "That true loves kiss thing? On us both?" he lay his hand over hers in unspoken reassurance, "And we were both too asleep to enjoy it" he said hoping to make her smile. He didn't want her to be upset or worried.
Tessa nodded, locking eyes with Jem as she wrapped her fingers around Wills. She knew Will was trying to ease the tension for her and she appreciated his attempt, but Jem’s silence on the matter was very concerning. “How does that make you feel?”
Jem stared up at them for a moment, his gaze wandering to their joined hands. He had to say something. He couldn’t stay quiet much longer. Clearing his throat, he brought his gaze back up to them for a moment before dropping it to look down at his hands in his lap, “I...I feel the same way actually.” Jem bit his bottom lip, waiting for a response from them.
“Bloody hell Jem, nothing like making us worry” Will said letting out a long breath before dropping back down to the couch this time close enough to Jem that their sides were touching and using their joined hands he tugged Tess down with him and she ended up gracefully sprawled on top of them both. “Well, now we know we’re all on the same page” he said with a small smile.
Tessa gave a little yelp as Will pulled her down and suddenly she found herself lying across their laps on the couch. Her head near Jem's end and legs near Will's. She giggled at his shenanigans and put a hand over her mouth to cover it up. Looking up at Jem and then Will she sobered a little. "So uh...what...what do we do now? I've never been in this sort of position with one person, let alone two," she gave a little shy smile up at them.
Jem’s heart was racing as Will sat down beside him and pulled Tessa down on top of them both. He had absolutely no idea where they were to go from here. Despite finding out that all this time he’d been worrying for no reason, he was still nervous. Not only did he also wonder where they were to go from this point, but he was extremely confused about Will. However, he would leave that discussion for another time. Right now they had to finish figuring this out, “I don’t know.” He glanced from Will then to Tessa, “I’ve never been in this position either.”
“Don’t look at me. I may be the worlds biggest flirt but this is new to me as well” Will told them, “Maybe we just hang out more? Try some kind of dating? See what happens and where things go?” He suggested, Will was all about going with the flow. He figured these kinds of things didn’t need to be too thought out. Over analyzing had never worked well for him.
Tessa nodded at them. Gazing up at them, she almost couldn't believe it. All three of them in the same boat and now trying to figure out a whole new life for themselves. "How about we continue with tonight, watch movies, eat popcorn and whatever and then tomorrow...we start afresh," she suggested. "This doesn't have to be all things all of all sudden," she smiled, referring to their relationship.
Jem nodded, “That seems like a good idea.” If they tried to think too much about the revelations of the evening then they were likely to think too much into it. “Go on with the evening as planned.” He was going to have to let Jubilee and Caroline know about this turn of events soon. He was sure Jubilee for one would be quite interested.
“That’s all agreed then” Will said relaxing into the couch, he knew he’d have to speak to Magnus and let him know about the turn of events. He was sure the warlock would want to know. And he knew he and Jem needed to talk, he’d seen it on Jem’s face earlier. That, he had a feeling, wouldn’t be as fun as the Magnus conversation.
