Halloween was coming up quick and Justin and Billy had yet to decide what they were going to dress up as. There was a party being held by one of Justin's artist friends at a gallery soon and he was sure that there would be other parties to follow, so getting a costume was a definite priority. They had decided to swing by the mall and check out the costume store, in the hopes that they would find something.

"Anything yet?" Justin asked as he turned into the aisle that he had last left Billy in. He'd taken a quick look at the next aisle, but hadn't seen anything of interest.

Billy had been sadly lacking any inspiration this Halloween, beyond wearing his costume from the dreams and that didn’t feel right to him. He wasn’t sure why. So here they were at the mall looking for suitable costumes.

“Pirates and creepy clowns down here” Billy called back with a bit of a grumpy face. “I think this is going to be harder than I thought”

“Somehow I don’t think I could really pull off a menacing pirate.” Justin said, glancing at the costume choices around them, “As a kid this was always so much easier.” He reached out to move aside a few costumes to see what was behind them, “And it’s hard to believe that with so many options, it’s so hard to choose.”

“As a kid we mostly got put in whatever our parents wanted didn’t we?” Billy said with a smile, “And we had more interests that easily translated into costumes. I remember being a teenage ninja turtle one year because I was obsessed with them”

Justin laughed, nodding, “That’s true.” He glanced over at Billy, smirking, “You must have been a cute Ninja turtle.” He went back to looking through the costumes and pulled out two bags then held them out for Billy to see, “Maybe we could be The Scarecrow and Tin Man from Wizard of Oz.”

Billy blushed, “Well my mom thought so” he replied before moving closer to look at the costumes. “That could be fun, they’re pretty cool characters to be” he said thoughtfully, better than anything he’d seen so far anyway.

“We’d definitely be the versions that you didn’t see in the movie.” Justin smirked, holding onto the costumes once he’d checked the sizes. It was a start and he didn’t want to lose them if they didn’t find anything else, “Lets move down a little. See if anything else catches our eye.”

Laughing Billy nodded, "Definitely a more interesting version" he agreed with a laugh. The next aisle held the vampire, devil and, randomly, Roman gladiator costumes.

Justin laughed as they moved to the next section, “Hmm, not really feeling the whole vampire thing. Especially since they’re apparently real now.” The novelty of certain things was completely gone now, because of Valarnet, “I wonder who decided that gladiator stuff went well with vampires and devils.” Justin never understood how these stores were put together.

“Mmm” Billy hummed his agreement, “Definitely no vampires or werewolves” he nodded before chuckling, “I know right? I mean there’s no connection whatsoever. Unless they wanted some kind of backup plan in case the costumes come to life. Maybe a gladiator could take on vampires and devils and win” he grinned.

“Hmm, I don’t know if gladiators could win against devils. Vampires maybe, but only if they knew how to kill them.” Justin was greatly amused by the conversation that they were currently having, “What’s next? I don’t think I’ve got the legs for one of those leather skirts.” Or the abs to be a gladiator, but he didn’t add that part, because he knew that Billy would tell him that he was perfect just the way he was and while Justin had no problem with the way he looked at all, it was just best not to start that conversation in the middle of a store where there were children, because it always led to mentioning other body parts.

“I guess it depends on what powers the devil used” Billy said thoughtfully with a smile. “I think you’ve got great legs, just so you know” he informed his boyfriend, because for Billy he did think Justin looked perfect. “Umm next aisle, more superheroes”

"Let's not get into that conversation. It'll only lead to non PG discussions." Justin smirked at Billy as they entered the next aisle, "I'm not really feeling wearing a bunch of padding and spandex." He eyed the costumes, most of which had extra padding to make it look like they had muscles. "So far the Tin Man and Scarecrow are looking like they're winning. Too bad we don't know anyone who could be Dorothy."

“Yeah, I kind of have enough of the superhero stuff in my dreams anyway” Billy said with a small smile, “I think that sounds like fun. We can always try and find a Dorothy, between us we must know a few girls right?”

Justin thought for a moment or two as they continued moving around the store, “You would think that we would. Too bad my friend Daphne already has plans.” If they had come up with this idea earlier, Justin was sure that he could have gotten Daphne to dress up with them, but it was too late now. “Can you think of anyone?”

Billy thought too as they wandered, “All the girls I know at the studio already have their costumes planned” most of them working in hair and makeup so it wasn’t really a surprise. “I could ask Clary maybe” he mused, “But I can’t think of anybody else”

“How do we not have more female friends? We’re gay, aren’t most of our friends supposed to be women?” Justin smirked, knowing that that wasn’t particularly true, but now that he thought of it, he really didn’t have many close female friends anymore. He spent so much time at work, doing art or with Billy that he didn’t really get out much to meet new people. He’d have to remedy that soon.

“I know right? We should have a whole gaggle of them” Billy smiled though he was actually thinking along the same lines as his boyfriend. More friends wouldn’t hurt them.

“After Halloween we should start going out more. Or talk to more people on Valarnet or something.” Justin said, heading towards the cashier. They’d wandered around the store a couple of times now and the Scarecrow and Tin Man seemed to be the costumes that won out.

Billy nodded, “That’s a good idea. Build up our friend base for the next time a costume need arises” he grinned but he knew Justin was right. They tended to keep to themselves more than they should and he knew Justin used to go to clubs more regularly.

Justin laughed as he nodded, “Exactly. Just in case another costume party creeps up.” He reached for Billy’s hand with his free one as they reached the line, “I mean, what other reason would people have friends for?” He gave Billy a little smirk.
