Daniel was looking forward to seeing Sam again. With everything that had been happening recently, it seemed like a good idea to just sit down and have some friendly conversation with someone he considered to be a close friend. He had developed a slight headache after dealing with McCoy and Elizabeth but that was cleared up and he was glad that whatever had affected them hadn’t affected him. Like he had told McCoy he probably would have ended up killing whoever he was forced to spend time with, he was just too reliant on his freedom to have someone encroach on it. He did things when he wanted to do them and no-one was going to impact it.
That wasn’t to say he wouldn’t make time for friends though, far from it in fact. That was by choice though which was the difference.
Carrying a bottle of wine, he knocked on Sam’s door and waited for her to open it.
Sam definitely appreciated seeing and talking to friends after being stuck with a stranger for a long weekend. It had especially bugged her that she had been unable to find a reason for their situation. There was some kind of force at work, that much was clear. Similar to a magnetic force though none of the readings she had taken had indicated anything different in the surrounding areas. It was a puzzle and one, she had a feeling, would remain unsolved.
Hearing the knock at the door she closed the notebook she was currently writing in and went to answer it. Seeing Daniel a bright smile crossed her face, “Daniel, it’s so good to see you” she greeted, “Come in, come in” she encouraged.
Daniel was happy to see her and returned the smile. Entering, he moved to give her a warm embrace. “It’s wonderful to see you too,” he told her truthfully. “It’s been too long,” he added. He’d missed their easy going friendship. While it had been odd at first getting to know her here while dreaming about her in the other world, he found in the end it actually made it easier for him. He wasn’t the most sociable person as it was.
“How are you?” he asked as he stood in the hallway. “It is good to see you again too,” he replied. “I thought I’d stop by - I brought some wine?” he added holding up the bottle that he had brought with him.
“It has. This place has a way of throwing things at you which take up a lot of time” Sam replied, she’d missed him too. While it had been an odd situation at first it actually helped knowing him from the dreams, they were both fairly similar and had a good rapport.
“I’m okay” she said beckoning him into the house, “Actually this is perfect timing because I have a frozen lasagne for two that I need help eating if you care to join me?” she offered, leading them to the kitchen to retrieve some glasses.
“That’s true but then life in general has a habit of doing that,” he admitted. He had always been the type of person who delved fully into his work and let it consume him no matter where he was in the world. In fact he was slightly less consumed by his work here but given how busy he was that probably didn’t say all that much.
“Sounds excellent with me,” he told her with a smile, following her into the kitchen. “How have you been?” he asked as he leant against the kitchen counter.
“Now that is very true” Sam agreed, she too had a habit of letting work take over. It was something John had commented on only recently actually, Lizzie too.
She retrieved the lasagne and put the oven on, “Oh not too bad. Glad not to be attached to anybody by an invisible force I couldn’t explain” she smiled, “How about you?”
“I can imagine. I’m glad I didn’t get hit by that. It seems Leonard was too, it must have been awfully awkward at times. Did you at least get someone nice though?” he asked curiously. “Otherwise I’m alright, just busy with work and at least trying to meet a few more people,” he admitted with a shrug.
“Yeah, I’m not sure Lizzie was too keen. But then she’s used to being mindful of security and everything” Her UN position meant safety was a big thing. “I did actually, as much of a workaholic as me but he was a nice guy” She tilted her head as she straightened from the oven where their dinner was now cooking, “Oh? Met anybody interesting?”
“No I got that impression too,” he admitted. “I tried to distract her as much as I could though,” he explained. “Security in both your house, work and in your life in general is always an important thing,” he agreed with a nod. “That’s something. Anyone that I know? I doubt it though,” he admitted with a shrug. “Audrey at the bakery is rather nice and I met someone called Clint who seemed interesting. Otherwise just a few random encounters here and there,” he shrugged again. “You know the ones, in the supermarket and so forth.”
“Me too” Sam said, though she knew Lizzie tended to obsess over things. “Elijah Mikaelson. He’s a lawyer, seems like a pretty good one too” she informed him. “I know Audrey, her bakery is incredible. I’m glad you’re getting out and about though”
“Doesn’t sound too bad,” he agreed. “Have you kept in contact?” he asked curiously. “Or a bit too soon for that?” he half teased his friend. “It is lovely and she at least makes sure I eat regularly which is probably a good thing,” he shrugged. “I’m trying to do more. McCoy said something similar recently actually when I went by to see him.” He sometimes wondered if they were ganging up on him but he knew his friends just meant well so he didn’t mind.
“Not so far. I mean if I see him around I’ll say Hi but other than that no big plans” Sam said, they were after all both busy people. “Oh don’t worry, Leonard and Lizzie have said the same thing to me too. Apparently I’m not good at socialising without prompting” she grinned.
“Makes sense,” he said with a nod and then laughed. “I don’t think any of us are good at socializing unless we’re forced to do so for the most part,” he replied. “Liz is probably the best out of it when it comes down to it. Here’s to friendship with people we have to force ourselves to see,” he said half joking. All of them did work far too hard though with Liz in a relationship that seemed serious she didn’t work as much as she used too - though McCoy seemed to work a lot so he just fit straight in.
They were essentially a group of workaholics, but Sam figured at the end of the day they at least had each other to ensure they didn’t become complete hermits so she thought that was a win. Sam laughed, “We’re terrible” she said, “But I like to think we’re just dedicated” she added.
“To us workaholics,” he said with a grin. “Let us never change.”
