Itād taken a bit, but Nik finally adjusted to the time change. Being awake while everyone else was awake now was a good feeling, and now that heād returned in a more permanent sense, he was still making his rounds with his siblings in regards to them catching up. It was what happened when your parents decided to pop one out one after the other - and that was the one thing good they ever did. His siblings were his entire family if nothing else.
He met Finn for lunch at a little pub opened during the day; the rustic kind serving greasy and delicious bar-type foods. Nik grabbed a seat while he waited and ordered himself a beer. It was after 12pm, thus perfectly acceptable in his eyes.
Over the last few weeks, Finn had been trying to come to terms with the whole vampire thing and while he was handling it a little better now, he still wasnāt exactly thrilled with the way his life was turning out. Heād finally allowed himself to compel someone at the closest hospital to allow him inside the blood bank so he could swipe some bags and of course he had the new cup that Damon had had a wizard make, which magically supplied fresh blood when he needed it, but even with all of that, he still had to fight the urge for actual fresh blood when he was out. He had the white oak stake hidden away so as not to tempt him and he actually planned to ask Henrik to hold onto it for him, because he had a feeling it would be safest with his youngest brother. No one but Kol knew of the thoughts heād had to use it on himself after heād first turned and he didnāt want to worry Rebekah about it and of course he wasnāt going to tell Klaus and Elijah just yet.
Speaking of Klaus, when his younger brother had contacted him to have lunch, heād agreed, having not seen Niklaus in quite sometime, aside from the dreams. Heād missed his brother and hadnāt really gotten a chance to really talk to him between the time that he had returned to Orange County and Klaus had left, so Finn wasnāt going to pass up this chance.
Reaching the pub, Finn went inside and after taking a quick glance around, he spotted his brother and made his way over to him, sliding into the seat across from him, āItās good to see you, Niklaus.ā
Nik loved his siblings, but Finn in particular had always brought up their parents in conversation. He was aware they existed. And was very much aware that they loved putting their input in their lives. But their parents had been one of the reasons Nik had fled to Europe and he still hadnāt bothered making the time to go see them.
Mostly Mother, anyway.
āItās been a long time, dear brother,ā Nik said as a greeting, leaning across the table with the chilled beer in his hands. āHowāve you been holding up?ā
Finn had always had a somewhat complicated relationship with their parents as a result of his being one of the oldest. Until Klaus had been born, Finn had been the youngest and then Kol, Rebekah and Henrik had followed and that left Finn craving attention that his younger siblings were then getting. To make matters worse, when it came out that Mikael was not Klausā father, most of the attention was on his younger brother and Finn had turned to drugs, which had definitely gotten Mikaelās attention, but not for the right reasons. So now that he was clean and on the right track, with the exception of being a vampire, Finn couldnāt help but still crave that attention.
Then there was his relationship with their parents in the dreams, mostly their mother, but Klaus didnāt know about any of that. He didnāt know what Finn had been prepared to do for their mother.
Trying to put all of that out of his mind for the moment, he smiled at Klaus and nodded, āIt has. Iāve been alright.ā If anyone else had asked, he would have answered differently, but Klaus didnāt know about the whole vampire thing yet. āAnd how have you been?ā
āBeen well, actually. Been with Bekah and Stefan until I get back on my feet. Sent out a few resumes for some teaching positions and am waiting to hear back. Iām dipping my toes into University level classes.ā Worst case scenario heād fall back into high school teaching, but he wanted something a little different than hanging around hormonal teenagers and their MTV inspired drama. Nik sipped his beer, the favor still crisp and cold with a very thin layer of foam on top. āAnd Iāve been spending time with Bekahās tiny clone version of herself. I canāt really get enough of the little one. Itās been far too long.ā
Finn would have offered his extra bedroom to Klaus, but his younger brother didnāt know that he was a vampire yet and finding blood bags in Finnās fridge would surely freak Klaus out and that was the last thing that Finn wanted. āRebekah seems extremely happy to have everyone together again. I remember how happy she was last year when I came back.ā Finn had spent so much time away from Orange County after his overdose that it was strange to think that he had already been back in Orange County for a year. āI know what you mean. I felt awful, not being here when she was born, but I wasnāt ready to come back then.ā
Rebekah wasnāt the only happy one about it, either. Life was a bit more tolerable when they were all reunited, even if they were a dysfunctional bunch. The waitress came over for their orders and he put his in for a burger and an overflowing side of curly fries. āNo one wanted to force you to come back, either. How has it been going? In that aspect.ā
Finn ordered the same, medium rare and a diet coke. While alcohol had never been Finnās problem, ever since the night he and Kol had gotten drunk and bit that woman, Finn hadnāt drank one drop of alcohol for fear of losing control again. āItās been...itās been going well.ā He may not have fallen off the wagon, but it felt like it with how dependent he was on blood now. Heād worked so hard to get off the drugs and now it felt like all of that work was for naught, because now there was a little voice in the back of his mind suggesting that he see what sort of affect drugs might have on him now.
āYou almost donāt sound very convinced,ā Nik observed, blue eyes practically searing Finn with a mixture of concern and suspicious. Granted, he hadnāt been told of any relapse and heād like to think the others would at least let him know if there was one in his absence, but he heard nothing of the sort.
If Klaus was dreaming or if heād been on Valarnet longer than only a few weeks, Finn might tell him about the whole vampire thing, but right now his younger brother was in the dark about all of that stuff, so he didnāt think it was a good idea to tell him just yet, āNo matter how long Iāve been clean, every day is a struggle, Niklaus.ā
āAnd this is why you need to keep away from the parents,ā Nik advised and finished his beer, pushing the empty glass side. He motioned the waitress for another fill, and soon she came back with another pour in a frosted pint glass. āTheyāll make any of us into addicts. Whether it be alcohol or otherwise.ā
Finn nodded, āYouāre right.ā Of course that wasnāt exactly what was going on here, but he knew Klaus was right in that regard. There enough issues to deal with with their parents in real life and the dreams just added to that and now being a vampire, Finn had enough stress and didnāt need to constantly try and get Mikael and Estherās approval anymore. āIām assuming you havenāt spoken much to them since getting back.ā
āTry not at all,ā he said with pep and a sneer. āAlthough motherās tried calling me once. I conveniently took my time to get my phone and unfortunately, it became a missed call and I seemed to have temporarily forgotten how to return those.ā Nik was being childish, he knew. He could just answer the goddamn phone, humor their maternal figure and be done with it. But he was content in believing that currently, his only blood ties in the area rested with his siblings.
That, and she must have known why heād left and wanted to discuss things. There was nothing she could say that would make him feel better about it. Nothing that he actually wanted to say to her about the topic, either.
He could only dodge her for so long. And could only dodge their father for so long.
āRecently spoke to Elijah, by the way. Heās having a case of dreams that are bothering him all too much.ā
Finn nodded once again as he listened to Klaus. He didnāt know exactly why Klaus had left not long after he, himself, had returned and he didnāt want to pry too much if Klaus didnāt want to talk about it. So much had happened over the last seven years that it could be any number of things. All Finn could do, without pushing, was let Klaus know that he was there for him when he needed him, āDreams? What sort of dreams is he having?ā Klaus wasnāt dreaming and even though he knew it wouldnāt last long, Finn hoped Klaus would stay that way.
āSomething about snapping someoneās neck with his bare hands? Really, I didnāt pay too much intention. Mostly nodded.ā Nik paused. āAnd then smiled, of course, and kept pouring myself a drink. And then discussed him throwing a Halloween party, which is something I definitely want to see happen. Itās Elijah, for godās sake.ā
Finn was more than familiar with those sorts of dreams. Sure, he hadnāt ever snapped anyoneās neck just for the heck of it, but heād seen it happen on more than one occasion from one of his brothers. āYou know that heāll simply wear a suit and try to work something about that. He could wear half a mask and go as the Phantom of the Opera.ā He smirked and took a sip of his drink.
The imagery Finn provided made Nik burst out into a quick laugh. Because it was so fantastically true. āYes, thatāsā¦definitely something Elijah would do. Make a Halloween Party as aggravatingly sophisticated as possible, until Kol and I show up. Although Iām sure Kolās done being a wild child, with him planning to propose to Tatia and all.ā
Finn too had received that text message from Kol and even though he was happy for his younger brother, he was also worried. Kol was a loose cannon in the dreams and now that he was a vampire, it had the potential to be very bad. āSomething tells me that getting married wonāt change Kol too much. I think itās safe to say youāll still have your partner in crime.ā
āOh, but Finn! Everything changes when you have a ball and chain,ā Nik chided, and right then was when the waitress appeared with their orders in hand. āMight be a little good for him, though. Anyone special in the area for you?ā
Finn couldnāt help but chuckle at the waitresses reaction she left, āShe obviously thinks weāre insane.ā He shook his head, smirking as he turned his plate a little, āNo. I had been seeing someone briefly, but it didnāt work out.ā Mostly because Finn had turned into a vampire and the girl heād been seeing was a regular, non-Valarnet person. It would have been much harder to explain and he hadnāt trusted himself around anyone at that time.
āWith our upbringing, we might as well clinically be insane,ā Nik snorted, taking another sip of his brew before digging into his basket of fries. āAnd, well, her loss, then. Us Mikaelsons have to be rather picky with who we decide to pull into our circle.ā Oh, the drama. The dysfunction. The tense family get-togethers and arguments. Mikaelās pretentious judgment. Not for the faint of heart at all. āBut youāre looking good, Finn. Iām glad for that.ā
Finn nodded, a smile creeping across his face, āI feel good, Nik. Really good.ā Aside from the whole vampire thing, Finn did feel good. He still had his fears and doubts, but for the most part he felt good and he was glad that Klaus and Elijah were back so that they were whole again and he hoped nothing messed that up.
