Martha was excited. Mickey had been away on a job for about a week and he would be home tonight. Before they had started dating, Martha hadn't realized that computer programmers actually went away for some jobs, but Mickey did that every so often. It wasn't a big deal when his trips coincided with her long shifts at the hospital, but when she was working normal hours and Mickey was away, she had a tendency to get bored, which was when she spent the most time at Torchwood with Jack.
Martha had made sure she would have the night off, so she had gone to Mickey's apartment to make dinner to surprise him when he got home.
Mickey was expecting to come home to an empty apartment. He had mixed feelings about that, because after a week away, the first thing he actually wanted to do was see his girlfriend, but it was always nice to be home, in his own place, after a little time away from the place. Even if he didn't plan to linger long before he went to see Martha.
Instead, though, he was greeted by the smell of something delicious cooking as he let himself into the apartment. Sniffing the air, Mickey followed his nose and was very surprised by what he found in his kitchen. "Well, this is a nice surprise," he said, grinning broadly at the site of his girlfriend. Getting to see her right away was nice enough, but the fact that she was apparently cooking for him? Even better.
At the sound of the door, Martha finished stirring the sauce she was cooking and wiped her hands on a dish towel as Mickey entered the kitchen. “Are you talking about me or dinner?” A smile crossed Martha’s lips as she moved towards her boyfriend, her arms going around his neck as she reached him and before he could answer her question, she kissed him. He’d only been away for a couple of days and they talked on the phone and texted during those days, but Martha had still missed him like crazy and was very glad that he was back now.
Mickey started to answer, but his words were lost against Martha's lips and that was just fine with him. He was going to say both, of course, but kissing her seemed like a much better way to demonstrate how much he's missed her than words, anyway. Besides, it was really nice to be able to do this after a few days away. Texts and phone calls were nice, but those things definitely couldn't measure up to having his girlfriend right here in his arms.
Martha was grinning as she pulled away and took a moment to look Mickey over before speaking, “Did you really think I could let you come home to an empty apartment where you’d have to order take out for dinner?” She quirked a brow at him, “I mean honestly, Mickey. It’s like you don’t know me at all.” She couldn’t resist teasing him a bit before pressing a kiss to his lips again, “I’m glad you’re back.”
"Hey, you say that like I can't actually cook," he protested, affecting a look of mock indignation. He was actually a decent cook when he wanted to go to the effort and he probably had enough perishables that he could have thrown together a decent meal. This was definitely better, though, because he not only got a good meal, but he got some time with the girlfriend he'd been missing.
"Mm, I'm a fan of being back, myself, but if this is the reception I get, I should definitely take more remote jobs," he teased as he stole another kiss.
“I’m not saying you can’t cook, but after a week of being away, you didn’t have much here that wasn’t spoiling.” Martha said, reluctantly pulling herself away from her boyfriend to check on the sauce and pasta, “Wouldn’t want you to get food poisoning. I mean, I want to see you often, but that doesn’t mean I want you to wind up in the ER.” She smirked at him over her shoulder as she went back to stirring the sauce then quirked a brow, “No, you shouldn’t take more remote trips. In fact, you shouldn’t take as many trips.”
“Hey, I had some stuff.” He wasn’t really complaining, obviously. He liked having Martha here and it was actually nice not having to cook so soon after he’d just gotten home from a day of traveling.
He laughed when she said he shouldn’t take as many trips. “No? I don’t know, I kind of like this whole being welcomed home thing,” he teased back. “Can I do anything to help, though?”
“Yeah, well I kind of like you being home more often.” It wasn’t so bad if Martha had long shifts during the times that Mickey was away, but then there were the times he was away and she had a regular schedule and he wasn’t around. “No, I think it’s almost done.” She went to test the pasta and satisfied that it was done, she removed the pan from the heat and brought it over to the sink where she had a strainer ready to get rid of the water, “Actually, you could get bowls and silverware. That would be helpful.”
“You do, huh?” Mickey grinned at that. He liked being home, too, but it was nice to hear her say it. It was nice to know that his girlfriend had missed him while he was gone. If you asked him, this was the best thing about these trips. He didn’t like being away from Martha, but it did feel pretty good coming home to her.
“Yes, ma’am,” he answered, walking over to the cupboard to pull down some bowls. From there, he walked over to the drawer where he kept the silverware and carried everything over to the kitchen table.
After draining the water, Marha brought the pan back to the stove, added some sauce so they wouldn't stick together then transported half the pan into a serving bowl before bringing it over to the table where Mickey was setting the place settings. "I hope your next work trip isn't for awhile." She said retrieving two glasses and the wine she'd bought.
Mickey finished setting the bowls and silverware on the table and then went to grab some napkins. “I’ll see what I can do about that,” he promised. Despite his teasing, he wasn’t anxious to go out of town for awhile. Mickey enjoyed traveling, but there was definitely something to be said for staying home, too.
