It was still really weird being back in the OC, and Lisa was really missing Austin every single day, but things were different here now. She had some friends here still, and her family was here in the OC, so she was making it work. The one thing she was terrified of was running into Dean. He was the last person she wanted to see, and so far she’d been pretty lucky. Over all she knew how to avoid him, and she hadn’t heard Amelia say anything about Ellie’s older brother yet… So there was at least that too. She always thought it was weird that their little sisters were good friends. When she and Dean were together she used to love that. Now, she just found it kind of awkward. Really awkward. She was happy they were still friends, but that didn't mean that Lisa didn't worry about it. Besides, she thought most people who knew her really well could probably guess who the father was.
“Yes, we can get some ice cream today. And you can even pick two flavors.” She said as Kyle pulled on her shirt with his free hand. His other hand was firmly grabbing Lisa’s friend Emma's hand. Emma was a girl she had known in high school and they’d actually stayed in touch. Which had been kind of rare for Lisa, after she had Kyle she really cut most ties with the OC other than her family. It was easier that way, and given that she hadn’t told Dean about Kyle… Well that made things just a little bit easier.
Emma next to her smiled and the two launched into a pretty normal catching up session. Lisa was really happy to have Emma around. Sure it was weird and Emma had guessed on who Kyle’s father was, but Lisa had never outright admitted it to anyone. Luckily right now they were talking about some of the weird things that were happening here in the OC lately.
“I know I moved back just in time for all of this to sta-” Lisa was saying when she caught sight of a man not even half a block away from them. She knew him too well, he looked good. She mentally started to mentally beat herself up for even thinking that when she started to panic a second later. She wasn’t sure what to do for a second. Looking over at Emma her eyes were really wide. She’d known that Dean probably knew that Emma didn’t have a son seeing as she had never left the OC, but who knew right?
Shit. He’d seen her. Shit. How was this going to work? Shit. “Hey Kait, can you take Kyle to get some ice cream. Whatever he wants.” If it wasn’t clear already to Emma that Dean was the father… nothing else would be. Emma nodded to her and reached her free hand out and squeezed one of Lisa's as if trying to tell her that it would be okay. Lisa was too freaked out to really figure that part out though.
She watched carefully as Kyle and Emma started to walk away. Her eyes on Kyle worried, but she knew Emma would take good care of him. She was just more worried about how this would play out with Dean...
“Dean.” She said. “Didn’t think I’d run into you so soon.” Lisa tried to smile but she was still really freaked out. Honestly she didn't know if she should hug him, give him a kiss on the cheek or what. There were so many emotions in her... she could barely figure out what to do.
Dean had just met up with his good friend Luke for a bite to eat and a beer. An hour or two spent bullshitting and reminiscing over the trouble they used to get into back in high school. Luke was one of the few people who Dean talked to about things. Except Lisa. He didn't talk about Lisa at all. To anyone. He had made it clear that he didn't want to hear how she was doing. If she really wanted him to know then she would contact him. Otherwise it would only lead to thinking about her, wondering what she was doing. By now though it was years and either people really believed he was over his ex-girlfriend or they figured out it was in their best interests to avoid talking to him about Lisa. Either way was fine by him.
"Tell the old ball and chain I said hi," Dean told Luke, pulling out cash and tossing it on the table. They walked out, talking about maybe playing a game of ball next weekend before going their separate ways. "Later man," he said, turning right out of the establishment as Luke went left.
So far there wasn't anything to complain about. The sun was out and the weather was warm. He just had a bacon cheeseburger from the best place in the OC. It was a nice relaxing day away from the shop. And after the bacon cheeseburger there were only two other things Dean could want. Beer and pie. Luckily the bakery wasn't that far away and Dean headed off towards Baxter’s Bakery. The employees who worked in there knew him by name. It was his first choice place to get his pie. He was almost there. It was just a little bit past the ice cream shop. Which also sounded really good. Nothing went together better than apple pie and vanilla ice cream. They were a very well matched set.
He glanced around, his eyes never resting on one place too long. Not until his eyes landed on a familiar face. Lisa Braeden. Their eyes met and then he was stuck. It was too late to duck across the street or turn and head off in the other direction. The last time they had seen each other they hadn't been doing much talking and there had been alcohol involved.
But he could do this. He could walk up to Lisa and Emma and whoever the little boy was and pretend this wasn't at all awkward. He was an adult. And that's what adults did. Before he even reached the table Emma disappeared inside with the boy. Dean didn't think much about the little boy. He'd never heard that Lisa had a kid. Then again he never wanted to hear about her. It could be hers or a cousin or even someone related to Emma. His brain was more focused on getting through that first awkward run in with an ex-girlfriend.
"Hey Lisa," Dean greeted with a friendly smile as he approached the table. He slowed down and stopped so they could do their obligatory small talk. Then hopefully she'd be heading out again soon or at the very least this would alleviate the awkwardness the next time they ran into one another. “Isn’t that always how it works,” he joked.
He looked good. That was a bad thing. Lisa was not supposed to think about the fact that he looked good. He wasn’t supposed to look good. That was not the point of ex’s. They were supposed to get fat and annoying, not better looking with age. Really her ex that was the father of… shit she was going to have to tell him wasn’t she?
Eyes darting towards where her son and Emma went she looked confused for just a second before she did everything in her power to pull it together again. She tried to smile a little bit more than she had already, but it really just came off as awkward and complicated.
“Yeah, I guess that is how it normally works.” Lisa said as she shrugged and a tilt of her head. “So, out getting pie?” Lisa guessed. Even though it’d been a long time since they’d seen each other, she still knew him. This was painfully awkward.
He should probably be fat with all the pie he eats. And all the other food he consumes. The greasier the food, the better it tastes. Dean worked out a little bit and tried to play pick up games after work but he still didn't work out as much as he probably should. But at least they were on a level playing field. She wasn't any less attractive than the last time he had seen her. In fact, it if was possible, she was more attractive.
"I must be getting predictable in my old age." Dean was doing his best to use humor to lighten the mood and try and break the awkwardness. "All I know is they better not be out of pecan. Or apple." He couldn't even say they were his favorite flavors. Choosing a favorite flavor of pie was just not possible for him. He had yet to come across a pie flavor that he disliked entirely.
"So…are you home on break?" he asked, trying to make small talk. He wasn't sure if he was supposed to continue the conversation or excuse himself and leave her to it.
“When it comes to pie, you’ve always been predictable.” Lisa said shrugging just a little bit. God, she was shrugging a lot, which meant she was really unsure of herself in that moment. Normally she was a much more put together and sure of herself kind of girl. But here she was… There he was, and shit, this was going to be… He didn’t need to know did he? She could just pretend that Kyle was someone else’s. Of course Dean had no idea how much was going on in her head.
As she tried to run through all of the ways she thought he might react if she told him, she decided to just try and not think about it. That not thinking thing made her nearly miss what he’d asked her.
“Oh. No.” She said quickly. “I moved back.” Lisa said getting a little bit more to her confident self. “Just about 10 days ago.” Lisa felt like maybe she should have told him before moving here, well that she was moving back… No. They didn’t talk, at all.
There was no argument there. She was one hundred percent right about that. Anyone who knew him knew about his love for pie. "You've got me there."
If Dean knew what was going through her head he'd throw in his two cents. He would tell her that she should tell him. That she should have told him a long time before that. But the decision was solely hers.
"Oh." He paused for a moment as that information settled in. "Well, that's great," Dean added. "Your parents must be excited."
It was so hard not to want reach forward and hug him. It felt strange the wall that was sitting between them, one that she knew was only going to get worse, and it probably was never going to get any better. Lisa looked down with a small smile.
“Yeah, I think they are.” She said looking up. There was a moment where she was about to say something else, but Kyle came running out of the ice cream shop with Emma right behind him.
“Mommy! Mommy! I got your favrit!” He said holding it up to her, he struggled with that word.
Lisa’s eyes went insanely big, well if he hadn’t guess that Lisa was the mother.. now he knew for sure. “That’s great Kyle, thank you.” Lisa said taking it just as Emma came up and gave her a sorry look and managed to get Kyle to go with her again.
“Mint Chocolate Chip.” She said, even though she knew that he knew that.
Before he could say something the little boy was out the shop door and running over to them. Dean was stunned for a moment as he watched their interaction.
Mommy? Now there were several questions and thoughts colliding around in her head. He immediately looked to her hands searching for a wedding band. Relief washed over him when, at least as far as he could tell, she wasn't married.
It has been a long time since Dean has been around kids. He was trying to guess how old the kid was which wasn't easy. He finally decided somewhere between two…no three and four. He started to do the math but dismissed it. Lisa would have told him. He was certain of it. Besides it was one night. What were the odds?
"I could never forget that," he murmured without thinking. As soon as the words were out he thought that maybe he shouldn't have admitted that.
"So…he's…he's yours." It wasn't a question exactly. He just…if he said anything else he might start asking questions about who she may or may not be dating.
It really almost broke her heart when he said that he could never forget it. She looked at him with a sad look in her eyes, almost as though she knew whatever mild kindness was here was going to be gone. If this could even be called friendly, it was strange.
Lisa had thought about talking to him about Kyle, but she never did because every time she asked about him she heard about his string of girls, and she didn’t want that for Kyle or for herself. There was a missing piece of trust between them.
“Yeah, he’s mine. His name is Kyle.” She said.
There was about to be more than a missing piece of trust between them when he found out about Kyle. Yeah, he cheated on her like eight years ago. It was a douche move on his part. But she kept his child from him.
"He's a good looking kid," Dean said. He didn't know the right way to find out if there was someone else in the picture. Feelings of jealousy flared up inside him at the thought of her being with someone but he pushed them away.
"Just like his mom," he added, meaning every word of it.
“Of course he is.” She said before he added the part of being just like his Mom. Bad timing for that. Really bad timing for that. She sort of froze for a second and got overly awkward. Even though they hadn’t seen each other in a long time… She knew very well that Dean still knew her.
“So…” She said feeling like no matter what she did or said would be wrong or awkward.
“Um…” she started again failing to find words.
“I don’t want to keep you from your pie. I know how important it is.” The way she said it probably came off as her saying that pie was always more important than anything else, but really she said it because it was hard to know what else to say.
"Right. Well..I guess I'll see you around," Dean responded. At least they would be done with this awkward sort-of-pretending-to-be-friends conversation. Besides she was right. He did have pie to get.
Okay, so that really sucked. Was the first thing that she thought of when he said that. It was horrible knowing that she never told him about Kyle, but really why would she? She just needed to figure out what to do. Right now though it didn't look like there was anything that she could do or needed to do.
"Right. Okay." Lisa said as she half rolled her eyes. "Good seeing you too I guess." She said a little bit of an edge to her voice, and with that she turned to go find Emma and her son. A part of her was really glad he didn't ask who the father was right at that moment…
Dean might have if he'd really thought about it. Or asked how old the kid was. But his brain didn't seem to be able to comprehend more than the situation right in front of him. He was far too focused on the fact that Lisa was here and she was back.
"See you around," Dean said, waving to her as he started in to the bakery.
