Helping David pick out a new microwave had actually been fun, but Mary Margaret was pretty sure that had more to do with the fact that it was David she was spending the afternoon with and less about what exactly they were doing. Despite the fact that they still didn’t know each other very well outside of the dreams, Mary Margaret enjoyed spending time with David, regardless of what they were doing. That and they had yet to actually talk about her most recent dream and what it meant for them in real life. In the dreams, the curse had been broken in Storybrooke, which meant they knew who each was and were together again. As a result of the dreams her feelings, which she’d already started feeling even before she’d started dreaming, were even stronger.
Not only that, but she had yet to tell David about her encounter with Regina. She had figured it was better to talk about all of these things in person than over the phone or texts. So, after they had bought David’s microwave, they had decided to get lunch.
David had enjoyed it. He enjoyed spending time with Mary Margaret no matter what, really, but there had been something that bordered on domestic when it came to microwave shopping, and he liked that. While he wasn’t sure if it was a genuine attraction he had toward her, or the influence of the dreams, he didn’t think it mattered much. The point was that it was there, and it seemed like she had a mutual feeling.
He made sure to pull out her chair for her before sitting down at their table for lunch, then he gave her a smile. “Thanks for coming along this morning.”
“You’re welcome, David. Thank you for asking me to come with you,” Okay, so other women probably would have found it extremely boring or lame to be asked out to help buy a microwave, but Mary Margaret wasn’t like other women and she enjoyed spending time with David, no matter what they did. She didn’t know if David was thinking of this as a date, but if he was then Mary Margaret wouldn’t argue that.
In his mind, it could be a date. It was a pretty terrible date, probably, but at least now they were having lunch? That could probably salvage it. “I guess I just like spending time with you,” he admitted, giving her a bit of an embarrassed-but-honest smile. “And I’m glad you didn’t have to hit me on the head with a rock for me to figure that out.”
David’s admission that he liked spending time with her caused Mary Margaret’s cheeks to flush slightly and she ducked her head a little before looking back up at him, a small smile upon her lips, “I like spending time with you too.” She laughed at his comment and shrugged a little, “I’m sure there are other reasons I could hit you in the head with a rock.” Not that she’d actually do that of course.
He laughed. “Let’s hope they don’t come up. You seemed to be pretty good at it. Thinking about it makes my head hurt.” David waited until they ordered their lunch, then he spent a few moments searching for the right words to say. “So. You wanted to talk about … Us.”
Mary Margaret laughed at his comment and nodded, “I was pretty good at it, wasn’t I?” She was still smiling even as the waitress came and they placed their orders. However, her smile faded slightly as he brought up the other reason she had wanted to come out with him. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to talk about this, but she wasn’t sure how to start this particular conversation. She’d been practicing what she would say earlier, but now they were together and it was time for the conversation to be real, “Yes. I just….well…” She laughed softly, “I’ve never done this before. Not like this.”
“What, you mean you’ve never had a dream about a guy being your prince charming, then met him in real life and went to go buy microwaves together?” David gave her a grin, but let it fade into a softer smile. “It is sort of crazy, isn’t it? At first I wasn’t really sure if … Whatever this is, if I just felt obliged because of the dreams. If that makes sense.”
This was just one reason she liked David as much as she did. He was able to take a moment that might have been extremely awkward and diffused it, making her smile, “That’s exactly it. I’ve never gone shopping with anyone I’ve dreamt about before.” She felt the urge to reach across the table and take his hand, but she resisted for now, “No, it makes complete sense. I started to wonder the same thing, but I’m pretty sure that my feelings started before the dreams. When we met that first time I came into the shelter.” She felt her cheeks flush slightly as she spoke.
Her words made him smile more, and he thought he might blush a bit, too. “It’s a lot of pressure. Living up to the true love, fairy tale romance.” David paused. “Not that I’m saying you and I need to do that. We should … If you want to, I mean, we should take it slow. Normal people slow.”
Mary Margaret’s smile widened at that and she nodded, “Yeah. Yeah, I’d like that. I mean, if you want to do that.” She didn’t want David to feel obligated, but it was clear that he did have feelings for her, so she didn’t think she had to worry too much about that.
“Oh. Well, good.” David flashed her an amused look. “I promise our next date will be more exciting than appliance shopping.”
