Myrcella was getting busier with her college course but she was still working for Tessa at the bookshop. She really enjoyed it and didn’t want to give it up if she could help it but she was starting to think she needed to have set days, especially now she knew which were her long days at college.
Entering the shop she smiled at Tessa and waved the Baxter Bakery take away cups in her hand, “I thought some pumpkin spice drinks would be a good idea” she said.
Tessa heard the doorbell tinkle and looked up to see Myrcella entering. She smiled up at the girl and closed the book she had been writing in. Tessa had started writing down her own experiences of the odd goings on in Orange County, to see if it might be worthwhile reading. She hadn’t shown anyone yet, but maybe when she’d finished one or two she might ask Myrcella to read it for her. Before letting Will read it and tease her about it for the following weeks or months. “Myrcella, good morning,” she smiled and set the book aside. “How are you?”
“Morning” she smiled, moving forward and placing the cups on the desk, “I’m great thanks. Busy but it’s nice. How are you? Are your boys okay now?” she asked interestedly.
“My...my boys?” Tessa stammered, her cheeks heating at the question. “I don’t know what you mean,” she gave a nervous laugh and fiddled with some papers on the desk.
“Jem and Will” Myrcella told her with amusement, her eyes sparkling, “It’s obvious they both adore you” she said simply with a shrug. She wasn’t telling the other girl anything she didn’t already know, she thought.
“Oh come now Myrcella,” Tessa felt her face flush again. “They do not, they’re just very nice, kind boys. Even Will,” she couldn’t help but add with an amused smile. In her Dreams he was much more...brusque, here he was a charmer more than willing to try his luck. “They’re both very dear friends to me and neither of them look at me in that light anyway,” she told her friend, clearing a space for Myrcella’s goodies.
"They are nice, kind boys" Myrcella agreed, and yes Will was a massive flirt but she got the feeling that was more just his personality than any real interest. "But I'm telling you there is definite interest there. From both of them. You're a lucky woman" she added with a wink.
"That's enough now Myrcella," Tessa told her. "Neither of them have shown much interest in me and why should they? They're both attractive young men with better prospects out there than me," she sighed. She'd all but convinced herself that whatever happened after the sleeping spell was pure co-incidence. She must have just gotten lucky and they had woken up on their own at the same time as she kissed them. That was all, it was a logical explanation, not some faerie tale of waking someone with True Love's Kiss.
Myrcella frowned, “Don’t say that” she said almost sternly, “You’re a wonderful person Tessa, whoever wins your heart is incredibly lucky. I’m sorry if I upset you but don’t sell yourself short. You’re amazing and you deserve someone as amazing” Tessa was incredible and Myrcella respected her a lot, looked up to her.
Tessa closed her eyes and sighed, putting a hand to her head. “Forgive me Myrcella, I’ve been out of sorts lately,” she told the girl softly. “I’m sorry I spoke so harshly just now, it’s just…” she shook her head and looked up at the girl apologetically. “There’s no excuse, I’m sorry.”
“Is it your dreams?” Myrcella asked softly, sitting on the edge of the desk near Tessa and looking at her sympathetically, “Or something closer to home?” Tessa had been so sweet to her, Myrcella wanted to help if she could.
“I...I suppose it’s a combination,” Tessa admitted. She looked up at her friend, biting her lip between her teeth as she considered the merits of telling her secret. Tessa didn’t have many female friends, in fact Myrcella might be her only one. “Can I tell you a secret?” she asked.
Myrcella could see Tessa was struggling with something and her heart went out to the older woman. “Of course you can. I promise I won’t tell a soul” she swore, crossing her heart with her finger.
Tessa smiled at Myrcella. She was a sweet girl and Tessa appreciated her candor. Clearing her throat and licking her lips, she took a deep breath. “You remember during the sleeping...bug that was going around I asked you to look after the shop while I checked on Jem and Will? Did you hear anyone mentioning how they were woken up?”
Thinking Myrcella remembered people talking, “Well I know people woke up on their own on the Sunday but...oh! True Love’s Kiss some people were saying they were woken up like in the fairytale...” she trailed off and her eyes widened, “Did you wake them up with a kiss? Both of them?” she asked in an excited but hushed tone, despite the shop being currently empty.
Tessa nodded slowly, eyes closed as Myrcella figured it out. “Yes…both of them,” she confirmed. “Please Myrcella, you can’t utter a word to anyone about this. I have no idea what to do!” she reached forward and took Myrcella’s hand in hers as she looked across the desk at the girl.
“Of course I won’t” she promised once again, squeezing Tessa’s hands as she did so, “I think it sounds like you need to talk to them. Do they know how you woke them?” she asked seriously.
“No!, God, how could I tell them something like that?” Tessa put her hand over her mouth. “I...in the Faerie Tales True Love’s Kiss is with your one true love...but I woke both of them up. What does that mean? Can you be in love with two people at once?”
“Maybe you can” she replied, “Maybe that is what it means. Would it have worked if they didn’t love you back? Maybe you guys are just lucky and you’ve all found each other. There’s nothing to say you couldn’t all do this together”
“I…” Tessa looked up at Myrcella in amazement. “I couldn’t...could I? How would I...talk to them about it?” her mind was racing so much, she couldn’t think. Could it be possible that both of them felt the same way about her as she did about them? Could they live and love together?
“It’s the 21st century I’m sure there are far more unusual situations around the world. At least you’d all be happy. They must love you, otherwise I don’t think the kiss would have worked so you should take a chance” Myrcella told her with an encouraging smile.
Tessa blinked and looked off to the distance as she considered what Myrcella was saying. “Say it’s true, how should I...bring it up? I imagine James would be frightfully embarrassed and Will...well, I’m not entirely sure how he would react,” she shook her head.
"Maybe tell them about how you woke them up and ask them, honestly, what they think about it" Myrcella suggested, "I don't know them as well as you but they do adore you Tessa, I think they'd overcome embarrassment for you"
“So...sit them down, make them tea….” Tessa paused, considering. “Perhaps something stronger. Then tell them how I woke them up and see what they say in response. I can do that,” she nodded, more to convince herself than anything else.
Myrcella nodded, “I think that’s a good idea” she said, “You can do it Tessa, I know you can and I think you’ll all be happier once everything is out in the open”
Tessa took a deep breath, casting a still partially skeptical look at her friend. Just talking about it made her nervous. She felt sick at the thought of them possibly refusing her after she told them the truth. "Pass me that latte, I think I'm going to need it," she reached out for the cup her friend had put on the table.
Myrcella passed the drink over squeezing Tessa’s arm as she did so, “Coffee courage” she said with a small smile, “It will all work out fine Tessa. I’ll soon be warning them about taking good care of you”
Tessa blushed at that and lifted the latte so she could take a long deep inhale of the beverage. After taking a quick sip, she turned back to Myrcella. “Anyway, how are you?”
“Oh I’m not too bad. Busy, like really busy. I’m really enjoying my course” Myrcella admitted, “But I do have a favour to ask”
“A favour? What sort of favour?” Tessa asked, tucking some hair behind her ear as she put her drink down.
“Well it’s just I know now that Tuesday and Thursdays are my long days at college so would it be possible not to work those days? Having fixed shifts would really help” she requested.
“Oh...well of course,” Tessa smiled at the girl. “I don’t see why that would be a problem. I’m so incredibly grateful for all your help here and you’re such a hard worker, but your future is so important. Just let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help,” she told the girl.
“Thank you so much. I really enjoy working here, it’s really great” Myrcella replied, “And if you really want to help it would be great to call on you when I need to start working on real people for my portfolio” she smiled sweetly at her boss.
Tessa laughed at that. “Oh dear, what have I let myself in for?” she grinned. “Of course Myrcella, just perhaps not during work hours,” she winked at the girl.
Myrcella laughed too, “Not in work hours I promise” she said, before standing, “Speaking of which, time to get to work” smiling as she moved over to the books to be shelved.
