Once Pepper had heard that the strange connecting phenomenon was over with she had contacted Rachel and arranged to meet up when the other woman wasn’t working. She was very grateful that she and Tony had been unaffected this time round.
Heading to Baxter’s, where they had agreed they could talk and indulge at the same time, she arrived and got into line to order for them both before Rachel got there.
Rach was excited to meet up with Pep. It felt like the morning after the Vegas trip they were all connected to weird people, and hadn’t had a chance to talk. Of course, that wasn’t exactly the case--there was a little more time between Vegas and tether. But it felt that way.
Rachel had a huge, purple hat on, a glorious white sweater, and large, round sunglasses. She stepped into the line behind Pepper, and gave a playful “boo!”
Pepper did jump a little before laughing, “Hey you” she greeted her friend with a smile, hugging her, “Looking fabulous as always” she commented as she looked at Rachel.
Rach laughed herself, then reached forward to give Pepper a big hug. “Thank you! And you… you’re always so polished. I love your hair!” Rachel pulled her hat and glasses off, and ran her hand over her own hair. “Excited for a coffee?”
“I’m always excited for coffee from here” Pepper smiled, after thanking her friend for the compliment, “I mean it sparkles for a start and even better we get to have a chat while enjoying it”
“Yes! I can’t wait to catch up. I’ve got questions for you, Pepper Potts.” Rachel looped her arm through Pepper’s elbow and stepped up into line. “And we may have to be naughty and get one of those absolutely amazing raspberry croissants, too. To share?”
“Oh my, that sounds ominous. You’ve got me worried” Pepper teased as they moved forward, “That is a perfectly wonderful idea” she nodded then they got served and Pepper insisted on it being her treat this time.
Rachel only argued a little. Then they were sitting, croissant cut in half and sitting between them, a drink in front of each woman. Rachel leaned forward. “You know,” she said, lowering her voice almost conspiratorially, “Kevin thought we were going to Vegas because Tony was going to propose.”
Pepper couldn’t help laughing a little at that revelation, “Oh my goodness. No” she said, “We went because Remy was going and Tony wanted to go too. He didn’t have any ulterior motive”
“What a shame,” Rach said, grinning a little bit. “I think Kev was hoping that Tony would join his ranks. You know. Ball and chain and everything.” She grinned a little more brightly. “What would you say if he did??”
“I’m not sure much would change even if it did happen” Pepper said honestly before blushing a little, “I’d say yes, in a heartbeat” she admitted, “But we’ve just moved in together so I doubt it’s going to happen very soon” she added before Rachel got her hopes up.
Rachel had been getting those hopes up. Her eyes lit up and her face brightened, but then she deflated a bit. “What? Why? Maybe you should ask him instead! Be non-traditional! He loves you, you’re living together, a piece of paper’s just one more thing, right?”
“Maybe but I don’t want to move too quickly. It’s a big change for Tony, commitment and all that” Pepper told her friend, “It’ll happen, I hope but he’ll ask me when he’s ready and I can wait until then”
“That’s so sweet,” Rachel said, breaking into a dreamy sigh. “You two are so perfect for each other. You’ve got enough patience to deal with his … baggage.” She grinned. “And the way he looks at you when you’re not paying attention? It’s as if the whole world disappears.”
“Thank you” Pepper said smiling, “I am one of the few who knows how to handle Tony that much is true” she admitted before blushing, “It’s strange I never thought Tony would look at anybody like that, let alone me”
“I dunno. It seems so natural to me, I don’t know how things were beforehand.” Rachel said. Pepper and Tony had been together pretty much since Kevin and Rachel moved into town. Pretty much since Rachel had met her. “I mean, his playboy stature is legendary, but I’ve never seen anything like it from him. Not personally. Not since I’ve lived here.” She grinned. “You changed him.”
“Apparently so. Or calmed him down a little at least” Pepper said, “He still does crazy things, he just talks me into them now too” she added with a small grin.
Rachel laughed. “I think you made him uninterested in other women.” She agreed. “And hey, if it means random trips to Vegas, I like the crazy things. Kev and I don’t mind at all that he talks you into them, too!”
“In all honesty I don’t either” Pepper laughed, “Things like that are pretty good fun. And it means we both get some time away from the office which is good for us”
“If you two work anything like Kevin does, then a little time away is essential.” Rachel said, nodding her agreement. She lifted her cup for a sip. “...other than no proposals, though, everything is good?”
“It’s important work. The company can’t run itself” she said, but she did know they both had a tendency to overwork. “Everything is good” Pepper confirmed, “Great actually. How about you? Still enjoying married life? And the shoes?” she chuckled.
“Oh my god, Pepper, the shoes!” Rachel exclaimed, then laughed again. She rung her hands. “I think I’ve spent most of my paychecks on those shoes. It’s dangerous having a job at a shoestore when one is so passionate about shoes! Check these out,” she added, turning and lifting one foot so Pepper could see the amazing, purple boots she had on.
Pepper laughed, “I did wonder if you’d essentially end up spending your wages there” she commented before looking at the shoes, “Oh but when you get shoes like that it makes it all worth it” she said, “Those are incredible. I really do need to come pay you a visit”
It wasn’t like she and Kevin needed the income. Rachel liked to have it, it made her feel like she was contributing, but Kevin was like, a gah-zillion-aire, so Rachel didn’t need to work. She could just glomp on. Kevin didn’t seem to mind. They were blissfully happy, and head over heels in love. Neither of them seemed to think she was leeching.
“Right?” Rachel said, breaking into a grin. “What size are you, Pep? I’ll just bring you some at work. I’ve got the perfect black, suede boots in mind for you, too.”
Of course Rachel wasn’t leeching, Pepper wholeheartedly approved of the shoe buying and she had no doubt Kevin did too.
“I’m an eight” Pepper told her with a smile, “That sounds great. Like my own personal show supplier” she added laughing.
“Hey, it’s the least I can do,” Rachel grinned. “I’ve got a fantastic job, I should share the wealth!” She pulled out her phone to make a note, speaking slowly as she typed the words in. “Size eight… Pepper. Got it.”
Pepper grinned, “Well I definitely appreciate it, your fashion help is the best after all” she said once Rachel had typed the information into her phone.
“Hey, it’s really no problem.” Rachel said, grinning at her friend. “So, the Vegas thing was fun, but we should do something again. Closer. The four of us.”
“Absolutely. Maybe after our housewarming?” she suggested, “A meal at our place the week after? I’ll cook something” It would be nice to have an intimate little dinner party.
“That sounds wonderful!” Rachel agreed with a nod. “I’ll bring the wine. I’d love to have a nice night, just the four of us. We can all cuddle up on the sofa and watch a movie, or something. Play board games?”
“That would be lovely” Pepper agreed, “I’m not sure if Tony has any board games at home, I’ll have to check but I think that sounds fun”
“I can always pick something up and bring it over. Or we can raid Kevin’s collection. I think he’s got something at home.” Rachel said. “We don’t play too often. He’s more into video games. But I like the way we can talk when we play a board game. Not so much with the techie stuff.”
“Amen to that” Pepper grinned, “I think it sounds fun. We don’t do enough fun interactive things all together. Let me speak to a couple of my employees and get some suggestions. I think I know of some who might be boardgamers”
“That sounds great!” Rachel said, beaming. “All right, well, I’ll let you get back to work, but I really can’t wait. It’s going to be so much fun!” They really were the perfect pair of couples for double-dating. The guys could geek out together and the girls were great friends, too.
