Summer was over. Another school year was starting. Although Caroline hated the end of summer she did like the first week of classes. There was never too much homework plus she got to meet new people. Caroline was a pretty outgoing person. She absolutely loved meeting new people and making new friends.
The blonde walked into her computer science class a few minutes early. She absolutely hated being late for anything. Especially class or work. Her eyes skimmed over the classroom. There weren’t too many people there yet, but one guy caught her eye. He was typing away on his laptop, but Caroline decided to approach him anyways. She walked right up, and plopped down in the seat next to him. Setting her books down she turned her attention to him. “Hi, I’m Caroline,” she said brightly before noticing what he was looking at on his laptop. “Oh my god you are on Valarnet?”
Stiles was still not used to being in class yet, especially in a class like this where it was a joke he had to even be here. He should, by all rights, have taken it last year as a freshman, but he was really hoping that they would just get rid of the requirement for CS majors.
He was pretty outgoing himself, so when the blonde sat down next to him and introduced herself he smiled back and prepared to introduce himself in return when she’d barreled on about the Valarnet screen.
“...uh, yeah,” he said, surprised. “You know Valarnet?” He looked her over, squinting a little behind his glasses. “I’m Stiles, by the way.”
“Yeah I do” Caroline replied. “It’s like the place to talk about dreams” if he was on Valarnet he obviously had to know about the dreams right? Pretty much everyone on there had them. So even if he hadn’t had them himself yet, he had to at least of seen some posts about them.
“Nice to meet you, Stiles” she added, her smile still plastered on her face.
“So you’re a dreamer,” Stiles guessed, fingers tapping idly on the laptop plastic next to the touchpad. “What’s your username? Have we talked before? I am pretty useless at matching usernames to faces.”
“Yeah, I think everyone on there is,” she offered, but she most definitely was one. Her eyes fell to her finger for a second, onto the daylight ring she had received a week ago, before focusing back on Stiles. “Um I’m not sure actually. miss-mystic. What’s yours?”
“Uh...hyperactivespaz,” Stiles replied, the name did click, though, and he beamed at her. “We have totally talked. I put up that post last week asking about demon possession.”
“That was you?” Yup. They had totally talked before. “Well it’s definitely nice to actually meet you then,” she replied smiling right back at him. “Did you ever find out if that means it is possible here too?”
“Jury’s still out,” Stiles admitted. “But I’m taking precautions. There’s a guy here--like a super magical guy who makes potions and stuff--and he said that there is a magical defense against things like that, so...that’s an option. If I can somehow become magical.”
“So wait, you are the one that gets possessed?” Caroline didn’t remember him telling her that part. “That’s good though. I know a wizard too, he has been helping me out with some things.” She had no clue if it was the same one or not. There seemed to be a few on Valarnet so it might not be. “Sorry, we like, just met and are totally talking about the most bizarre things.” Like really what had her life become, that this conversation felt normal to her.
Stiles smiled a little at the rush of words--not that he was any better, sometimes. He’d been known to talk, and to talk about what other people would consider to be inappropriate things right away. He shrugged. “My boyfriend’s a werewolf, so. ‘Normal’ seems kind of relative now.”
“Really, like here?” Caroline asked. “My Dream boyfriend is one. Or well now he is a hybrid, half-werewolf half-vampire.” Caroline had never met an actual werewolf in real life. Vampires and wizards? Sure. But never a werewolf.
“Seriously? That’s a thing?” Stiles stared back at Caroline with equal bemusement. “Wow. But...yeah. He’s a werewolf in my Dreams, too, although he’s not my boyfriend there, and he’s turning into one here, which is both weird and awesome.”
“Yup. It’s a thing.” Her Dream world was very confusing. Well not really, but she knew it sounded like it to others, with original vampires, and hybrids and all that. She probably wouldn’t be able to keep them all straight if she didn’t see it all herself. “Awesome really? You aren’t scared?” She was terrified of what she could become.
Stiles raised his eyebrows in surprise, then narrowed his eyes. “Of what? Him hurting me?” He scoffed, glancing up when the professor walked into the classroom. “Werewolves are capable of controlling themselves, even during the full moon.”
Clearly their Dream werewolves were different. The ones in hers had no control during the full moon, unless they were a hybrid, but that was different. “Not so much in my Dreams” she said with a shrug her eyes falling on the professor as well. “But every Dream world is different.” Like the fact that the vampires in hers weren’t all evil like the one’s in Buffy’s.
“That it is,” Stiles agreed quietly. “Infinite diversity in infinite combinations. Star Trek definitely got that right.” The professor started to speak and he glanced over at Caroline to flash her a smile. “Anyway. Nice to meet the real person behind the avatar. Hopefully this class won’t suck too badly.”
Caroline had no idea what Stiles was talking about. Star Trek was so not her thing. She just smiled and nodded her head. “Definitely nice,” she agreed, turning her attention to the professor.
