Audrey was really feeling the pregnancy today. She was leaning against the pastry case, looking out into the cafe with nearly glazed-over eyes. The day was going by super slowly. Audrey couldn’t wait to go home and sleep. Making another person was really exhausting work. Thankfully, Audrey was a very personable person, happy and optimistic, even when she was exhausted! She smiled at another customer, and moved to the register to take an order.
“Just the usual please, Audrey,” he said with a smile. “You alright?” he asked a moment later when he noticed the slightly glazed-over look in her eyes. He knew that sometimes the pregnancy took a toll on her but he could tell she was trying her hardest to be personable despite it all which he appreciated. Not many people could be said to be able to do that on hard days.
“Oh, yes, I’m fine.” Audrey was tired, but smiling warmly. “Thank you for asking. Just… making another person. It’s hard work, you know.” Audrey teased. It was how she rolled, really. She was glad to be there even though her feet were swollen and her lower back hurt. She wrote Daniel’s order on a cup and passed it to the barista. “Are you hungry this morning? We’ve got Pumpkin fever around these parts.”
“I… I would say I understand but I suppose I really don’t given I’ve never been in your situation or ever will be but I do understand theoretically what you mean,” he said with a grin. “That I’ve noticed. I think everyone in town does with Halloween coming up. I suppose I might as well grab something to eat given I haven’t eaten since last night. Or was it lunch. I don’t remember,” he said with a shrug. Sad thing was, that was perfectly normal for him.
Audrey laughed. “Theoretically is fine,” she said, nodding. “...jeez, Daniel, why aren’t you eating?” She added, moving to the case to pull out some food for her regular. “I don’t like that. You need to keep up your strength! You’ve got important business to do.”
“Theoretically it is then,” he said with a smile. “I just forget. I mean to eat but you know me. I get so involved with my work that it just takes over and before I know it hours have passed and sleep sounded better than food by that point,” he admitted. It was something he was trying not to do but it was hard to break habits, especially the bad ones.
“I’ll have to start texting you, then, to remind you to eat.” Audrey threatened playfully. “It sounds like you need something to distract you from work, not just remind you to eat.”
“Probably call me. Multiple times in a row then I might answer,” he said with a grin. “Could work. My co-workers usually drag me out of my office for lunch at least when they can,” he said with a shrug.
Audrey chuckled. “Man. You’re such a silly guy. I can’t imagine forgetting to eat. It’s all too often that I remember to eat more than I should!” She held the plate out to him with a breakfast sandwich on it for him.
“It’s why you liked me though,” he grinned. “Thank you I do appreciate it,” he said taking the sandwich. I suppose I should let you get back to work?” he asked realising that there were still people waiting to be served. “When you’re not so busy I’ll take you out for lunch, how is that? That way you can make sure I’m eating.”
“Hey, I can’t say no to free lunch.” Audrey said, giving him a bright smile. “Yeah, let me serve more customers. You send me a note when you’re ready to hang out, okay? I take my lunch breaks a little early, but I can adjust the time.” She moved back to the register. “I’ll talk to you soon!” Then she turned to the next customer to take her order.
“Sounds good and I’ll let you know,” he said before turning to go letting her get back to work.
