Rachel was looking for something for Kevin. They had an anniversary coming up (first date, or first kiss, or first… whatever. She couldn’t remember which one this was) and she thought she’d get him something cute. The trouble was, he had pretty much everything already. So Rachel had to find something interesting. Something he hadn’t thought of before.
She headed into the shop she’d heard about on Valarnet, and started looking around. It seemed like the perfect place to find something unique for a man who still used words like “radical”...
It was a pretty slow day in the store, which bummed Peter out. Though at least it gave him a lot of time to think about his super awesome dreams. Seriously, they were pretty rad. But when he saw a potential customer walk in, he snapped out of his thoughts and was relieved that he finally had something to do.
“Hey! Welcome to Star-Lord. I’m Peter, let me know if you need anything.”
Rarity brightened at the sound of the voice and turned to give the guy--Peter--a smile. “Thank you! I… actually, I’m looking for something.” She said, and turned to head in his direction. Another mind on the “problem” might be a faster way to finding a solution. “What do you have for a 1980’s arcade game enthusiast?”
“Oh, man, I have so many things.” That was really right up his alley. He motioned for her to follow him as he wandered off in a direction down an aisle. “Do you have like, a price point or something? Cause I have some pretty affordable things, then I’ve got some stuff that might make your wallet cry.”
“Let’s make my wallet cry.” Rachel broke into a bright smile as she followed him through the store. “It’s for my husband on our anniversary, so it’s worth it.” A dating anniversary? Or the first time they went thrift store shopping back in Vegas? Or maybe when they went to that museum in New York… God, she couldn’t remember. But whatever it was, she wanted something that would make Kevin gasp and laugh.
“Love it.” Peter flashed her a grin over his shoulder, then motioned to a set up of some arcade games and pinball machines. “These are just some I keep in the store, so people can get a look, you know? I have a few more in a storage room to save space. Personally, I love the old pinball machines, but I’m gonna tell you, if I was an arcade enthusiast, this would be the baby I’d want.”
He put his hand proudly on top of a Frogger tabletop game. “Excellent working condition. Oodles of fun, guaranteed.”
Rachel gave a little gasp. “Oh my gosh… Frogger. I’ve heard about Frogger.” She moved over to take a good look at the machine. It was amazing. Like stepping into a 1986 movie. Which would be perfect for Kevin, really. He was into this kind of stuff. Of course, Rachel was a bit too young to remember it all fondly, but she could appreciate the 80’s for the awesomeness that they were.
“Wow. I’m impressed! How much is it? How badly will my wallet be crying? Because I think I have to have it.”
“It’s one hell of an anniversary gift, that’s for sure.” Peter was a bit jealous. Whatever lucky guy had nabbed this girl, he had hit the jackpot there. “Well, let’s see … Everything works great, the condition itself is recently restored … You seem like a nice person, it’s a special occasion and all.” He pauses to consider the market, and what things were going for. In the grand scheme of things, the unit had come to him at a pretty light price and he figured he’d still turn a good profit on it. “How about we say thirteen-hundred?”
Rachel grinned brightly. If the store owner had such high things to say about it...? Well, maybe he was just trying to make a good sale, but Rachel doubted it. She thought he seemed genuine in his excitement for this particular piece. And Kevin would adore it, of that she was certain. It seemed like a pretty good price. And Rachel wasn't the type to haggle. "Thirteen hundred? I can swing that. Does that include delivery? Because I would really appreciate someone bringing it to my house. Not sure I can carry the thing on my own."
“What, you mean you weren’t planning on just lugging it out?” Peter gave her a teasing look. “Yeah, I can totally include delivery on that. I’ve got some guys who do it all for me, so we’ll go ring this sucker up and then you can just fill out the delivery form.”
Rachel gave a soft, embarrassed chuckle. “You’ve got it.” She turned to follow him back to the register. “I thought this was going to take more time and searching. I cleared my whole afternoon.” She was obviously tickled that it’d been so easy to find the perfect present.
“I aim to please,” Peter said, holding out his arms. He led her over to the main counter so he could ring up the purchase, and he slid over the delivery form. “Just fill this out and we’ll take care of the rest. And I’ll give you a copy of my card so if you need to change anything, you can just give me a call.”
Rachel had one of those really impressive, thick, black credit cards. It was Kevin’s account--he was the one with the money, after all--but her name was printed on the card. Rachel Flynn. She slid the card and her state ID across the counter, grinning, then happily accepted the delivery form to fill out. “I’m hoping to have it delivered on October 2nd. That’s the day of our anniversary,” she said, putting down her address.
Fancy. Peter was glad that maybe he’d done well enough to make this one a repeat customer. He swiped the card and had her sign the receipt, then gave her a copy as well as his card. “October 2nd. You got it.”
Rachel actually squeed a little when she got the receipt, the card, the credit card, and shoved it all in her wallet. “Thank you!” This was going to be perfect.
