Who: Vala/Faye When: Mid September Where: Beach What: Catching Up Rating/Warnings: Low/None Status: Complete
Faye and Vala had decided they needed a change of pace so they’d both taken the day off and decided to top up their tans. It was a lovely day and thanks to people being back at school and work it was practically empty.
“We should do this more often” Faye said, she was laying on her back her eyes closed and the sun warming her body. “Spa days too when it’s not beach weather” she smiled.
"Oooo, spa day!" Vala grinned. "Yes please! It's been far too long since we've had some proper pampering," she sighed, feeling the warm sun sinking into her skin. "Summer was a bit of a downer in the end what with Merle and Nolan leaving, we deserve a treat...or six," she said, not without sadness. She had really liked Nolan, he was a great lay, fantastic bod and the right amount of attachment (or lack thereof).
“Mmm that’s what I was thinking” Faye agreed turning her head to look at her best friend, “We should know by now not to trust men. At least we still have each other” she said, reaching out to squeeze Vala’s hand. “Us against the world girl, as it should be”
“Too right,” Vala agreed, squeezing Faye’s hand in return. “Men are good for one thing,” she paused and contemplated that thought. “Well, maybe two,” she grinned cheekily over her glasses at her friend. “Never get attached. We both forgot about that as a rule,” she settled back down in her recliner.
Faye laughed, “A few things but never commitment” she nodded, “We’ll just have to remind each other in future”
"With a stern talking to? Or a slap in the face?" Vala asked cheekily.
“Why hold back? Both, one of them is bound to work” she grinned.
Vala threw her head back and chuckled at that. "Ok, both," she agreed. "Followed closely by a stiff drink, " she added. "I wonder how his kid's getting on," she said. "All that moving about can't be good for a kid."
“It’s not good” Faye said, “Kids need stability, that’s why I stopped moving around. Glimmer needed it and now her and John have their own little set up”
“That’s so cute,” Vala grinned, thinking about Faye’s little sister. “Does it ever like, weird you out? Thinking that she’s all grown up and doing...adult things?”
Faye shrugged, “Not really. She’s always had the more sensible head on her shoulders. She knows what she wants and she’s found it with John”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it,” Vala looked over her sunglasses at her friend with a knowing cheeky look.
“I know exactly what you meant” Faye replied with an amused twist to her lips.
Vala laughed at that. “Minx,” she replied with a big grin. “How’s she doing these days? What’s she upto?”
Faye winked, “She’s doing all kinds of photography jobs. Weddings, graduations, even a few modelling shoots. And John has started up his computer business, they’re doing wonderfully well” her tone was a little wistful. She missed her sister and John.
“Cool, sounds like they’re really settled. Any talk of you becoming an auntie anytime soon?” Vala asked curiously.
“They are. I need to go out there to visit them soon” Faye replied before shaking her head, “A few years yet I think. Glim wants to establish herself first and not rush it all. I told you, she’s a sensible girl”
“Where ever did she get that from I wonder?” Vala teased. “But a few years...well, that’s enough time for me to source some people who knit so I can get them to make lots of pressies for me to give,” she laughed, even though she was serious. Vala liked the concept of handmade gifts but she lacked the skills to be able to do it herself. However, what skills she lacked, she more than made up for in payment. “You’re thinking of going out there then? For how long?”
“Not from me” Faye replied with a wink, “Plenty of time to source incredible gifts” she grinned. Faye wasn’t particularly gifted herself, unless you counted being able to count cards and con people. So she too would be buying presents. “Just for a visit, couple of weeks maybe. Three weeks tops. You wanna come along?”
“Good good, you know I don’t like to be outdone,” Vala grinned. “I’d love to come! Not sure I could stay the full three weeks though. I’ve got quite a few autumn weddings and corporate Halloween parties I need to keep on top of, that be a problem?"
“Not at all. As long as you like, honey” Faye said easily, “I probably shouldn’t leave the bar that long but it’s been a while since I’ve seen them. I’m planning on spending Christmas there but New Year is too big for the club really”
“That’ll be nice, I could maybe come for a week then? You got dates in mind?” Vala asked, settling back against the deck chair. “I’d offer to help at New Years but I’ve got three people already asking about planning parties for that night, so I’m going to have to be mobile, sorry,” she apologised.
“Maybe 27th October which means I’d be back for November 15th” she mused, something like that. Glimmer and John had mentioned a Halloween party they were holding that they’d like her at. “Oh no, that’s fine. I rather like working on New Years Eve, it’s always good fun”
“Ok, well I should be able to make it up after Halloween, maybe the 2nd of November? Things should have settled down by then,” Vala sighed. “And quite frankly I could do with a break, these Dreams have been really getting to me lately,” she confided in her friend.
“Sure, sounds good” Faye nodded before frowning at her friend, “That doesn’t sound good. What’s happened?” she asked curiously. Neither of them talked about their dreams much though she wasn’t sure why.
“Oh I just…” Vala sighed heavily, readjusting her position on the chair. “I had a weird Dream that I had a child. That was intent on destroying the world. It was unsettling,” she explained.
“Bloody hell” Faye breathed, “That sounds a bit intense. And kind of a demon child too. I mean that’s a pretty big aspiration for a baby”
“Yeah, it was weird,” Vala frowned, turning her head to Faye. “And she grew up in like...a day. A day and she got genocidal tendencies!”
“A day?” Faye said incredulously, “Jeez Vala, that is freaky and worrying”
“I know, right?” Vala sighed. “This is why I’m never having kids. Pretty much anything that’s related to me ends up crazy,” she laughed, even though she pretty much believed it regardless. Look at her parents; couldn’t stand each other while her mum was alive, couldn’t stand her, all but abandoned her and now her dad was constantly looking out for zany get rich quick schemes. “I just hope she doesn’t turn up here because god knows this place doesn’t need anymore weird shit going down!”
“Good job your bestie is already crazy” Faye joked, patting her hand. “Not everything from the dreams comes true here” she pointed out, “But if she does turn up we’ll handle it, she won’t even remember to begin with though. It seems to take a while for the dreams to start”
"Damn, you caught onto the reason I picked you as a friend," Vala grinned over at her, before thinking about Adria again. "It's not so much her I'm worried about. She was created by these...maleficent aliens who wanted everyone to worship them. Religious zealots the lot of them," she told her friend.
“Ah religious zealots, just what every set of real feeling dreams needs” Faye replied, “We have enough of those for real in this world, we’ll make sure they don’t take over here. Alien or not”
“Yeah, they’re determined in my Dreams so I hope to god they don’t appear here,” Vala grimaced. “What about your Dreams? We’ve never really talked about them,” she looked across at Faye.
“Well you know they’re set in space, intersteller con artist and bounty hunter. So you can imagine the fun that comes with that” Faye shrugged, “I can’t really remember my past in them, kind of like here I guess”
"You think that's why we were drawn to be friends? We both have similar backgrounds in the Dreams," Vala considered. "Have you ever wanted to look into remembering? Hypnosis or anything?"
“Maybe. Or maybe it’s just cos here we’re incredibly hot, strong women who are just too awesome not to be friends” Faye suggested, before shaking her head, “Not really. The dreams are enough, I don’t need them when I’m not asleep too”
“Well, there’s that I suppose,” Vala grinned. “You know what, we’re just too awesome for words, who needs Dreams,” she joked.
“When they have a Faye” she added laughing, “We keep each other on track. What more do we need?”
