Caroline would be lying if she said she wasn’t nervous. It wasn’t that she was scared to meet a wizard or anything like that, but talking about the possibility of her becoming a vampire, that always made her uneasy. As much as she wanted to live in denial, she knew she couldn’t. A lot of her friends from the Dream world had already turned, deep down Caroline knew it was only a matter of time before she did too. The blonde was determined to be prepared for it. The last thing she ever wanted to do was hurt anyone, so whatever items and potions Severus could help her with she was all for.
Caroline took a deep breath, gaining her composure, before knocking on the door. Sure she could have made Damon go with her since he already knew the guy, or even just gotten things through Damon. But, she was a big girl, she could take care of herself and she wanted to do this on her own.
Severus Snape was a helper. This world was very different from his Dream World. There was no Lily Evans here. There was his ex-wife, the mother of his children, and Daisy and David… they made him into a different person than he’d been in the Dreams. A happier one. A healthier one. One who was more than willing to help out. Though, it wasn’t entirely altruistic. He was curious, and that made his motives slightly selfish.
Daisy and David were with their mother today. Severus had the house to himself. He came to the door in his casual clothes; black slacks and a black sweater. His nose was large, his hair long and untidy.
“You must be Caroline.” He said after pulling the door open. “Please, come in.”
When Caroline had first talked to Severus a few days ago, she hadn’t had any symptoms or any reason to believe she was going to become a vampire any time soon. Other than the fact that she had dreams about it, but the previous morning she had woken up with the daylight ring from her dreams on her finger. It was safe to say it freaked her out, from what she was told receiving the ring meant it was only a matter of time before she turned. So this meeting with Severus couldn’t have come at a better time.
“Yup, that’s me” Caroline replied with her usual warm smile. “And you must be Severus” she added as she followed his lead stepping inside the house. “Thank you” she wasn’t one to forget her manners after all. Caroline glanced around, not really sure what to do or say, this was an unusual situation for the girl. “You have a nice home.”
“That I am.” Severus closed the door behind her, and turned to lead the way through the house and to the garage off the kitchen. “Thank you,” he responded. A few of Daisy and David’s toys were littered around, but other than that it was a very nice, neat place. The furniture was sparse but very well maintained. Everything matched. There were some absolutely fantastic smells coming from the oven. “My laboratory is in here.” He said, opening the door to the garage so she could go through.
The garage had been turned into a lab. White walls, bright lights, with tables along each wall and one running the length down the middle. He had several cauldrons with magical equipment along one wall, and modern, Real World equipment along another. A large cabinet was filled nearly to bursting with stoppered test tubes and bottles, all labeled carefully with black writing on white labels.
There were two very comfortable looking chairs, and a coffee table with a tea set. “Would you like some tea?” Severus asked, leading the way across the room.
Caroline followed him into the lab, her eyes taking in all the white and brightness of it all. It was clear this was something that he did often. She had to admit all the tubes and bottles weren’t exactly putting her at ease. Damon had told her she could trust him, and she believed him, but everything about vampires still made her uneasy, especially when it came to her becoming one.
Maybe tea would help. “Yes, please” Caroline replied. “So um, what exactly have you done? Elena mentioned something about a magical cup?”
Severus moved to the tea set and gave a flick of his wand. The teapot lifted itself up and poured two cups of tea. “Just let it know if you want milk and sugar,” he added, and moved across the laboratory to check on a potion brewing against the far wall. The cauldron was giving off gentle, gold sparks.
“...It’s a cup that refills itself with blood after it’s been emptied. Well, nearly emptied. It’s part of Gamp’s Laws of elemental transfiguration. Magic cannot make something from nothing. It can be transfigured, replicated or summoned, but not created. If there is a little blood left in the bottom of the cup, the cup will magically refill itself.” Sev spoke idly, almost bored, as he checked the potion. Mostly, he wanted the girl to feel at ease. He didn’t want her to be nervous or suspicious.
Caroline watched in awe as he moved the teapot with his wand. Sure, she had seen Bonnie do magic in the Dreams plenty of times. But this was her first time seeing it in person. It was definitely something she was not use to.
The blonde honestly had no idea what he was even saying when he talked about laws and how the cup worked and all that, but she simply nodded her head like she understood. “Well that’s useful. A lot better than stealing blood bags” or biting someone, but she didn’t say that part out loud. “Do you think you could make me one?” she was still a bit uncomfortable talking about the whole vampire thing, but she knew she needed to accept it and start dealing, which was precisely what she was trying to do. Caroline walked over to the tea picking it up and taking a sip. “I mean if it’s not too much trouble” she added.
“Yes.” Severus said, turning back around to face her. “Of course I can. It wouldn’t be a problem.” He moved back across the room to pick up his own tea and take a seat. “Those are the main concerns, are they not? Blood and the sun?” He wondered if there was anything else he should be concerned with. Anywhere else he could help.
“Really? Thank you” Damon had mentioned getting her a cup, but this was just easier, going straight to the source. Instead of waiting around for Damon. Plus she was sure Severus actually wanted to know the people he was making things for. “Yeah I think so. I actually got a daylight ring, showed up in my room yesterday” Caroline held up her hand so he could see the ring. He was the first person she had told, she didn’t like advertising that her time was coming. “So I guess I have the whole sun thing covered” she added taking the other seat next to him. “I’m not really sure what else I would need? I don’t like thinking about it too much, honestly.”
“I don’t blame you. Large life changes like these--most especially the ones that are out of our control--are daunting. But you will be prepared.” He nodded once. “May I take a look at your ring?” He asked, holding a hand out expectantly. She was welcome to say no, but he was merely curious as to its magical properties and if it was the same as the one he’d replicated for Damon already.
“Sure” Caroline slowly removed the ring from her finger. For some reason she felt like she was doing something wrong. Like she would burn the second it was off, but that was silly. She wasn’t a vampire yet. She had nothing to worry about. “Here you go” she added once it was finally off and she dropped it into his hand. Nothing bad happened she was not on fire. Everything was okay.
She was inside, too. She was perfectly safe in Severus Snape’s garage. He accepted the ring and took a close look at it, almost as if he was inspecting it. Then he drew out his wand and muttered a soft incantation. The ring glowed for a moment, and spun around on his palm, then came to rest again. “Fascinating.” He said, then reluctantly held it back out to her. “I would love to study it further.”
Caroline’s eyes widened as she watched Severus say some kind of spell or something, and then her ring glowed. “What’s fascinating?” she couldn’t help but ask as she slipped the ring on her finger. “Oh, um sure” it was the least she could do since he was helping her out and everything. “It’s just, I don’t know when I am going to need it. Hopefully not for awhile though, so I guess I could let you study it for a few days?”
“Whenever we meet again. I don’t need to study it for long. I can always make myself a duplicate.” Severus said, nonchalantly. “And it’s fascinating the types of magic used. Unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It’s much more… natural? if that makes any sense.” Severus wasn’t sure what he was saying, so he was fairly certain it wouldn’t make sense to Caroline, either. “
“Oh yeah. I can definitely do that” she felt better about having him study it while she was around. She didn’t really want it out of her sight, just in case. “Kind of, I think Bonnie, the witch from the dreams that made it, anyways I think she gets her power from nature?” Caroline said it morse as a question, taking another sip of tea. She didn’t fully quite understand it all herself.
“I would like to meet this Bonnie.” Severus said, thoughtfully. “Is she here in this world?” He asked, then took a sip from his own teacup. He was interested in magic from all the different worlds, and learning as much as he could from the other witches and wizards in this one. It could only improve his own magical skills.
“Not that I know of” Caroline shook her head. “It would be nice if she was though. She’s one of my best friends in the Dreams, and a witch. She helps us all with magic. At least we have you here though. Seriously, it is so nice of you to help us” Caroline wasn’t sure how many times she had said that now, but she didn’t think she would ever truly be able to express her gratitude.
“It’s not a problem. I have to admit that I do it selfishly. It’s keeping my magical skills in practice, and I’m learning quite a few new things as well.” Severus admitted. “I do wish your friend will show up here, though.” He could learn so many things talking to a real magic user from their dream world.
“Well I’m glad it works both ways then” she took another sip of her tea. “You and me both” Caroline said lightly with a small laugh. “If she ever does show up here I will let you know. Promise.”
“Feel free to finish your tea,” Severus said, standing. “I have to check on some potions while we’re in here.” If she had questions or if she wanted to follow him around, she was welcome to. But he had timers set up around the room, and was slowly making his way around, turning them off. Each was sitting by a cauldron, and after turning each timer off, Severus would add ingredients or stir or poke at the bunsen burner under the cauldron with his wand.
Caroline continued to sip her tea while she watched Severus tend to all his potions, feeling a bit out of place. “Are those all for vampires?” she finally asked letting her curiosity get the better of her. She wasn’t even sure how many things vampires needed, but she didn’t think it was that much.
“No.” Severus said, turning to look over at her. “This is wolfsbane. It’s for Werewolves. And this is a luck potion.” He motioned to the one emitting gold sparks. “And over here is Amortentia. This is the most powerful love potion that I dare brew.”
“Oh yeah. We have that in my Dreams too, none of the werewolves from my Dreams are here though. At least I don’t think so” she hoped Tyler wasn’t around or going to show up anytime soon. It was weird enough having Klaus around. “Love potion? Do those really work? Isn’t that kind of wrong? To like force someone to fall in love?” there she went again with her rambling.
“Very much so.” Severus nodded. “It’s a terrible thing to do. Magically induced love is hollow. Empty. Cannot replace the real thing. But the potion is intricate, difficult, and a good way to stretch my Potion-Making skills. And an efficient way to test whether specific ingredients can be exchanged for non-magical ones from this world.”
“Well I guess that makes sense. From a technique standpoint. What do you do with it when it is made though? Since you don’t want to create magically induced love?” Caroline was definitely curious about the whole thing and just how magic worked in general.
“I can use some of it in other draughts and experiments. The rest I put into the soil. It helps my garden grow beautifully.” Severus explained. “I should market it as plant food. Highly toxic, do not consume.”
Caroline couldn’t help but laugh at that. “That’s a good idea actually. I’m sure my mom would buy it.” She gave him another smile before sipping her tea, finishing off the rest of her cup.
“Your mother has a garden? As soon as I’ve finished this batch, I’ll put some into a bottle for you.” He offered, reaching out to accept the empty cup from her if she was finished. “Just make sure that she doesn’t drink it, no matter what it smells like.”
“Oh yeah. She is super proud of all her flowers” she replied handing him the cup. “You don’t have to do that. You are already doing so much for me. But I will definitely warn her. I don’t want her falling in fake love with some random person.”
“It’s really not a problem. I’ll work on the artifact--the cup that refills itself--and the bottle of Amortentia.” He made a mental list. “I should have them both ready for you in less than a week. But you’ll let me know if you need a rush on the order, will you?”
“I will” hopefully she wouldn’t need a rush order though. “How much will I owe you?” she hadn’t come prepared to pay him today, but she could probably get the money together by the time the items were ready.
“Owe?” Severus turned from the potion in the cauldron to the blonde girl again. “You don’t owe me anything, Caroline.” He insisted. “I do these things because I want to--because I can help. Money means nothing to a Wizard, anyway.”
“Really? Thanks. I mean I don’t really know what the standard is I guess. You are the first Wizard I have actually met, like in real life. Or in the Dreams too. I only met witches there” she admitted not really sure if it was different or not. “So I can give you my number for when everything is ready.”
“All right.” Severus drew his wand and conjured a notebook and pen for her to write down her information, and levitated the teacup back to sit with his own. “Sorry, technology doesn’t work well around all the magic,” he waved his hand toward the row of cauldrons giving off sparks. “You can write your phone number here.”
Watching him move all the objects with his wand was still weird for her. She wasn’t sure she would ever get use to it. Although she had only seen it for the first time a few moments ago so maybe she would get use to it at some point. “Okay” she said before taking the notebook and paper. She scribbled down her number handing him back the notebook and paper. “Here you go. I should probably get yours as well in case I do need it to be rushed.”
“Ah, yes. Of course.” Severus ripped a page from the notebook, and scribbled down his cell phone and work phone numbers. “Here.” He added, holding it back out to her. Then he set the notebook aside. “Please keep me informed should your needs change.”
“Thanks. I will” she said taking the paper and putting it in her purse. “Well I should get going, let you get back to all this” she gestured to the room and all the potions. “Thanks again.”
