Caroline’s conversation with Rachel the previous night had left her craving a pumpkin spice frappuccino. She had decided to get one before work this morning. It was so worth getting up a bit early for. Besides it would wake her up more anyways. Plus she was looking forward to getting coffee with Rachel. They had talked on the net a few times, but it was about time they actually hung out in person.
Caroline arrived a few minutes before 10. She didn’t spot her companion yet so she decided to go ahead and get in line. Rachel was bound to arrive soon, and at the very least Caroline could hold a table for them after she got her drink.
It was great to meet new friends. Especially when Rachel was feeling the absence of her Equestria friends so painfully lately. She showed up at 10 on the dot, having run a few minutes late this morning trying to figure out what to wear. After all, meeting friends from the internet meant a very specific outfit was necessary.
She stepped into line behind the blonde and glanced around, then leaned over to take a look. “...Caroline?” Rachel asked, breaking into a small, hopeful smile.
When Caroline heard her name she immediately turned around. “Hey” she greeted the girl, immediately recognizing her from her pictures. “It’s about time we did this” she said with her usual warm smile. “Not to mention I have been looking forward to this since we talked last night.” The line moved and Caroline stepped forward, just one more person in front of her, she really was dying for that frappucino.
“It is, indeed.” Rachel’s smile became much more genuine. Relieved, even. She nodded. “Oh, me, too! I think Pumpkin Spice time is my favorite time of year. That and the Cranberry Bliss Bars. Those aren’t out yet, are they? Because I could gain a thousand pounds on those.” There was a little twinkle in her eye.
“Same here. I don’t get why they can’t serve it year round. I swear the fact that it only comes out once a year makes it even more delicious you know? I barely ever order any other flavors in the fall.” At the mention of the Cranberry Bliss Bars, Caroline immediately looked in the case to check. “Doesn’t look like it, unfortunately.”
“Like Girl Scout Cookies!” Rachel agreed with gusto. “I swear they’re even more amazing because they’re only available for a couple weeks during the spring.” She turned to lean around and look for the pastries in the case. “Darn. Well, I guess that could have a silver lining. Less time on the treadmill.” She grinned wickedly. “...You’re going to work at eleven?”
“Oh my god right? That was like the best part about being a Girl Scout back in the day. I always knew when it was time and I made my mom order tons. Although I ended up going through them in like a week. Now I have to be sure to be on the look out outside grocery stores and all that every spring so I don’t miss them” Caroline laughed a bit, she had a tendency to ramble at times. Especially when it was about something she loved.
“Good point, and we have something to look forward to” she added, always one to look on the bright side. “Yeah, unfortunately. But we still have plenty of time and you could always totally stop by my work” she added before stepping up to the cashier to place her order, which was of course the pumpkin spice frappuccino and a piece of coffee cake. She stepped aside waiting for Rachel to place her order as well.
Rachel stepped forward to order her frappuccino and a butter croissant. Not warmed. “Why do they always ask to heat things up?” Rachel asked after they’d paid and were waiting for their drinks at the bar. “I think a warm butter croissant--warmed after the baking, I mean--sounds gross.”
“I have no idea, the only thing I really liked warmed up are cinnamon rolls you know?” cold or room temperature cinnamon rolls just didn’t taste the same. “But anyways, what do you do?” she asked curiously as they waited for their orders.
“I like making those at home. When I’m out I try to get things I wouldn’t make on my own, you know what I mean?” Rachel was actually quite the cook. Unlike her husband, who made scrambled eggs and hot dogs for breakfast. Hot dogs. Seriously.
“Oh, I have my own haute couture fashion line. I sell through my Etsy shop. And I’m working as a buyer for that hot new shoe store, Shoegasm?” Rachel said, breaking into a bright smile at the mention of her jobs. She was one of those few people who was honestly happy about her work.
“Seriously?!” there was no way Caroline could keep the excitement out of her voice. If there was one thing the girl loved it was fashion and shopping. “That is so amazing.” It definitely beat being a waitress, but hey she was still in college after all.
Rachel gave a little laugh. “Yes, seriously. It’s a good life. I’ve got a really good life right now.” She nodded. Of course, it was probably a bad idea to say something like that in Orange County. She was likely to get frozen or turn blue or into a man or something. “What about you? What do you do?”
That was definitely a rare thing to hear in Orange County. “It really does sound amazing. And you are married too?” Caroline remembered her mentioning her husband once or twice, but she hadn’t really asked about him yet. “Nothing exciting. I’m just a waitress. But it pays the bills and the hours are flexible when I have classes” which unfortunately were about to start back up soon.
Caroline heard her name called, she walked over to the counter grabbing her drink, just then Rachel’s name was called too so Caroline grabbed her drink for her as well. “Here you go” she said handing it to Rachel before the two headed towards an empty table.
“Hey, thanks.” Rach gave Caroline a smile, and moved to a nearby table with her. “Yep. Kevin and I tied the not… oh, gosh. In the spring? It feels kinda like we’ve been married for years, though. Eloping didn’t change much. Just a piece of paper and a name change for me. We’re still living together, still doing all the things we did beforehand.” She sat down and gave a little sigh. “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with being a waitress. It’s a completely respectable career. Not everyone can do it, you know.”
“That is still pretty awesome though. How did you guys meet?” Caroline may not believe in having a relationship of her own, but she still liked hearing about others. “Thanks. I like it for the most part, just not so much when I have difficult customers” she laughed before taking a sip of her frappucino. “So good.”
“It feels like forever ago,” Rachel recounted, leaning back in her chair and lifting the frappuccino to sip from the straw. “We were both living in Vegas, and a mutual friend suggested that we go thrift store shopping together. Like a blind date? Anyway, turns out we have similar tastes in certain things, and we started hanging out more after that. One thing led to another, and we moved in, moved to New York, came out here… and here we are.” That may have been an over-simplification of the relationship, but she wanted more sips of coffee. “I think you’ve got the perfect temperament.” She said, then grinned before sipping again. “I know, right? It’s amazing.”
“That’s a lot of moving” she commented taking another sip of her drink. “I have barely been out of California. I lived in Huntington Beach like my whole life and when I moved away for college I didn’t even go far or for long. Just to San Francisco for a semester” she shrugged pulling her coffee cake out of the small bag they had given her. “I have only been out of the state once. My friend took me to Vegas a few weeks ago, but really it must be so exciting to have lived different places especially with someone you love” she gave Rachel a small smile before breaking off a piece of coffee cake to eat.
“Wait, you’ve only left the state once?” Rachel asked, looking astonished. “Seriously? Well, we might have to do something about that some day. Take a trip somewhere just for fun.” She lifted her coffee for another sip. “Kev and I moved around a bunch, so my friends are scattered all over the place. That’s the only hard part about moving so much. I don’t have as really close of friends as I have in my Dreams.”
“Yup” Caroline admitted sheepishly taking another sip of her drink. “Pretty pathetic huh? I’ve always wanted to travel too” her eyes brightened at Rachel’s suggestion. “Oh my god seriously? I would love that” she took another sip of her coffee before speaking again. “Oh yeah, that must be tough. That’s why when I tried to move away, I ended up coming right back here. I mean I did make friends and all, but I missed my friends here too much, and my mom.”
Rachel laughed. “Yeah! Wouldn’t that be tons of fun?” She asked, growing excited about the idea. “I mean, we don’t have to go anywhere exotic. Just pick a city to go explore. There are museums and art galleries pretty much everywhere. And food. Really good restaurants.” Rachel suggested. She wondered when it would be okay for her to take a few days off from her new job.
“We definitely have to do this now, maybe like a weekend trip? You know classes” she really hated the end of summer, even if it did mean pumpkin spice was back in season. That was probably the only good thing. “I don’t have any classes on Fridays though so we could go somewhere for like three days?”
“Weekend trips are the best. Where do you want to go? We should pick somewhere that not a lot of people go. Not a big, touristy location. Like, Montana. Or something. What’s a big city in Montana?” Rachel asked, grinning. It would probably be cheap to go visit Montana.
“Ummmm” Caroline took a sip of her drink while she thought about that. “I honestly do not know Montana geography like at all” she said with a small laugh. “Thank god for google” she added pulling out her Iphone and googling Montana. “There’s some placed called Billings? Oh here is a place called Great Falls, that sounds interesting. Like there might be waterfalls there.”
Rachel laughed. “Me neither.” She said, grinning. “Ooh, hey.” And then Rachel leaned over to take a look at Caroline’s phone. “Billings. Great Falls. Oh, I love waterfalls!” Rachel clapped her hands together. “That’s a plan, then! We’ll go to Great Falls, Montana for a long weekend.”
“Yes! Let’s just hope the name isn’t misleading. But either way it will be fun to explore someplace new” Caroline couldn’t keep the excitement out of her voice. “But really, why haven’t we done this sooner? I think this is the start to a great friendship.”
Rachel let out another playful bark of laughter. “Can you imagine? Great Falls, but they have no falls. I might sue for false advertising.” Rach said, grinning brightly. “Yes! This is perfect! I’ll definitely drink to that.” She said, and held up her coffee cup so they could toast and clink.
Caroline laughed along with Rachel tapping her coffee cup against the brunette’s. “To the start of a great friendship” she repeated again before taking a sip.
