Clary had been gazing at a particular painting in the gallery for a few minutes, with people milling about and talking around her. She hadn’t brought Jace to the show, wasn’t sure he would appreciate it when he could have been making out with her at home instead. The painting she was looking at right now however drew her attention because something was off about it but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. There were aspects that were pleasing to the eye but there were others that just...weren’t. It intrigued her. She was so engrossed in trying to figure it out that she didn’t notice the girl walk up to stand beside her.
Davina had heard about this particular art gallery from someone in one of her art classes and had convinced Marcel to come with her. Marcel also enjoyed good art so it hadn’t really been that difficult to get him to take her and stay with her. They’d been wandering around, looking at all the paintings and other pieces of art for sometime before Marcel told her he was going to look for the restroom and that he’d text her when he came back in case she’d wandered to another room. While she waited, she did in fact wander around some more until she came to stand beside another girl with red hair who was looking at one painting in particular.
Clary caught movement in her peripheral vision and jumped slightly as the girl stood next to her. Putting her hand to her chest and letting out a nervous laugh, she said to the girl, “Oh god, you made me jump.”
Davina glanced over at the girl as she jumped, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” Sometimes Davina didn’t realize how quiet she was. “I didn’t disturb you, did I? I can go look at something else if you wanted to be alone.”
“No, no, it’s fine,” Clary smiled at her. “Sorry, I just got carried away. I’m Clary. Clary Fray,” she smiled as she turned and held out her hand to the other girl by way of introduction.
Davina was relieved that she hadn’t upset the other girl and took her hand, shaking it, “Davina Claire.” She returned the smile easily, “Are you an artist too?” Of course not everyone who came to an art exhibit needed to be an artist, but she found that a lot of the people who attended them dabbled in art now and then.
“Yeah, I am,” Clary answered with a smile. “Although I like to sketch more than anything else, pencils are my friend,” she shrugged. “I envy anyone who has this much mastery of watercolours,” she referred to the painting in front of them. “How about you?”
Davina nodded, “Yeah, I’m an artist too. I use various mediums.” Davina enjoyed trying new things when it came to art and was currently trying to master sculpting. She’d had a few disasters in the beginning, but was starting to get better at it, “My favorite is painting though. I did a painting for our dining room at home.” It had been Marcel’s Father’s Day gift.
“Really? So you work on big pieces then? I’ve always found them, I don’t know...a bit intimidating I guess,” Clary shrugged. She liked her sketchpad, it felt like the right size for her to work with. She supposed she needed to get braver with that sort of thing though. She’d tried different mediums as an experiment, she should probably try and experiment with size too.
“Nothing this big.” Davina gestured towards the painting they were currently standing in front of, “But yeah. I’ve done a few biggish pieces.” The mural she’d done for Marcel was probably the biggest one she’d done so far, “Do you primarily just use sketchpads?” Davina had sketchpads that she’d carry around with her in case inspiration struck, but she liked using various mediums instead of sticking to just one.
“Mostly. It’s what I’m used to I guess,” Clary shrugged. “I try to be adventurous from time to time but it’s nice to go back to what you’re familiar with. I like using chalks too, but that gets messy and my mom complains about having to wash my clothes enough as it is,” she joked.
“I’ve never tried chalks. Do you use regular paper or something different?” She took a quick look around to see if Marcel had come back from the restroom and when she didn’t see him, she turned her attention back to Clary, “And is it regular chalk or like art chalk?” She might have to look into chalk at some point or ask one of her art teachers.
“You should, they’re a lot of fun. I use a thicker gauge of paper with them and its textured too which is nice to work with,” Clary smiled, hoping she was being helpful. “Do you paint with oils or watercolours? Any tips?”
Davina made a mental note to look for textured paper and chalks the next time she went to the art supply store, “Both. Depends on when I’m doing.” She tried to think of any tips that she could give the other girl, “Um...nothing I can think of off the top of my head. I usually just put on some music and paint what comes to me. I don’t usually try to paint something particular unless I’m in class and it’s an assignment.”
“Music, ok, I’ll try that, thanks,” Clary nodded with a bright grin. “I gotta get going, but it’s been great to meet someone who enjoys art as much as I do,” she told her. “Are you on the Valarnet?”
Davina nodded just as she saw Marcel come back and began walking towards her, “Yeah, I am. So, I’ll probably talk to you again then. See you later,” She was actually looking forward to talking to the other girl again and hoped that they could talk about art again soon. Giving Clary a small wave, she turned towards Marcel.
