Tessa was worried about Will and Jem. She hadn’t heard from them for more than a day, neither of them replying to her phone calls, text messages or email. Saturday lunch she decided to take a trip over to their house to check whether they were ok. Approaching the door and sliding her key into the lock, she couldn’t help but feel the anxiety rising in her chest. Turning the key, she pushed the door open to find Church sat just inside, as if he was waiting for her to arrive.
“Hello Church, where are they?” she asked, stepping into the apartment and shutting the door behind her. The cat meowed at her, loudly, a rarity for Church, so she knew something was wrong. She watched the cat as he brushed against her legs and moved off towards the bedrooms at the back of the house. Frowning, she followed him, calling out as she went. “James? Will? Are you there?”
Church came to a stop outside the door she knew lead to Jem’s bedroom. He turned to look at her and sat at the threshold as if waiting for her to go inside. She put her hand against the door and pushed the slightly ajar door wider open. “Jem!” she gasped, rushing to where the boy lay sprawled on the bed and sat by his side. Leaning over him, she took his face in her hands and tilted his head on the pillow to look at her. His skin was cool and clammy. He must have been like this for a while and not had his Yin Fen. “Jem? Can you hear me?” she called urgently, fingers brushing against his cheeks. “Jem?!” She gently brushed some hair off his forehead and out of his eyes. “What happened to you?” she asked herself. “Where’s Wi…”
She looked up suddenly. Where was Will? He would die before letting Jem get into a state like this. “I’ll be back in a minute James, I’m just going to find Will, ok?” she told him, even though she knew he probably couldn't hear her. She rested a hand on his chest before she got up and headed back to the hallway. She looked down at Church who was still sat by the doorway, seemingly watching what had been happening in the bedroom. He looked up at her, tail flicking on the floor behind him. “Stay with him while I find Will,” she told the cat. Ridiculous for most cats, but she had no doubt that cat understood everything she had said.
Tessa hurried off to the other bedroom which she knew belonged to Will, bursting into the room without knocking. “Will?” she called, pausing for a second as she took in the state Will was in. He was similarly tangled in his bed sheets and spread over the bed. She moved to Will’s bedside and sat down next to him. Putting a hand against his cheek, she felt his slight stubble beneath her them as she stroked it back and forth. He was cooler but not as cold as Jem and not clammy. There was no blood on either of them and the front door had been locked when she got there so no-one had broken in.
She’d heard talk on the Network of people having trouble sleeping, nightmares, others who had fallen into a sleep and not been able to be awoken. Gazing at Will, she remembered someone had mentioned that they had felt magic was responsible. Perhaps it was old magic, like in faerie tales.
But in the faeries tales, the Prince kissed the Princess awake, not the other way around. Then again, he never had two Princesses. If she’d learnt anything living in the OC these last few months it was that anything was possible and to expect the unexpected. This was modern times for crying out loud, girl power and empowerment and al that. She could be the one to save the Princes...couldn’t she? Wasn’t it true love’s kiss that was supposed to wake the Princess? Could you be in true love with two people? What if one woke up but the other didn’t? What if neither of them did? She knew she loved them both dearly but she didn't know how they felt about her.
Sighing, she looked up at the ceiling and shook her head. It was a stupid idea, but it was the best she had right now. Looking back down at Will’s chiselled features, she took a deep breath and leaned down to press her lips to his. She closed her eyes against the gentle pressure, desperately hoping to feel his lips press back, his breathing speed up beneath her and see his beautiful eyes staring up at her when she pulled back.
Will hadn’t even realised what was going on, he just simply hadn’t woken on Thursday morning. Not that he’d know of course, when he woke he’d just assume everything was normal. Well with the exception of the horrid nightmares he’d experienced. Nightmares of those he loved dying and it being his fault, Jem and Tessa featured prominently.
Slowly as though a veil had been lifted he dragged in a breath and his eyes fluttered open coming to rest on Tessa leaning over him. “Tessa?” he said, finding his throat raspy, as if it hadn’t been used recently. “What’s wrong?” he frowned in confusion.
“Oh Will,” Tessa half sobbed, half grinned in relief. She put a hand over her mouth in surprise. She felt tears springing to her eyes as Will frowned and looked up at her. “Wait here,” she told him, patting his chest as she got up and hurried to Jem’s room.
There she found Church sat on Jem’s bedside table, a paw resting on the box containing his master’s medicine. Quickly sitting next to Jem, she stroked back his hair from his forehead and placed her hand against his cheek before leaning in to kiss him. She felt hopeful this would work. Pulling back, she watched for a similar reaction as she had seen with Will.
Like Will, Jem had been having nightmares as well. In his, Yanluo had come back and made Jem watch as he tortured Will and Tessa, leaving Jem completely helpless to try and help them. It had been worse than listening to his parents being tortured in the dreams, because in his nightmares, it was happening in Orange County. It was happening for real. So of course, he was relieved when he finally opened his eyes, squinting slightly at the sudden onslaught of light and took a moment to focus on Tessa’s face. “What…” Before he could ask what was going on, he started coughing, his mind and body catching up to each other to tell him that he had missed his medication. He didn’t remember skipping it, but the coughs that racked his body and the flecks of blood that he coughed up confirmed that he had in fact missed a dose or two, but he wasn’t sure which it was.
Tessa all but sobbed as Jem came round and she closed her eyes in relief and covered her mouth with her hand. When he started coughing, she gasped and suddenly remembered about his Yin Fen. "Where is it James?" She asked him, trying not to focus on the blood speckling the pale skin of his hand. "James?" She put a hand on his arm as he coughed. "Will? Will, please! I need your help!" She called over her shoulder to the other bedroom before starting to look around for the Yin Fen.
Will had been on his feet when he’d heard Jem coughing, by the time Tessa called he was practically in the bedroom. Taking in the situation he moved to Jem’s bedside, pushing Church out of the way so he could get to the box. He helped Jem sit up before opening the box, “Come on Jem, you’ll be okay” he said as he helped him take the drug. He glanced at Tessa, “How long were we asleep?” he asked a frown appearing on his face as he took in Jem’s state, his hand stroking his friends hair while the other supported his shoulder as he lay back down.
"I'm not sure, I last heard from you on Thursday," Tessa told him, calming down somewhat now Jem had taken some medicine. She could still feel the tears in her eyes, but they were from relief at seeing both her boys awake. "How are you both feeling? I don't suppose you remember anything that happened, do you?" She asked, looking between them both.
Jem didn’t want anyone fussing over him, but at that moment he knew that he needed the help and allowed Will and Tessa to assist him in taking the Yin Fen. Once he’d taken a proper dose, he laid back down, his skin slightly clammy, “I’m alright. Better.” It wasn’t completely a lie, but he definitely wasn’t planning on getting out of bed for the rest of the day, unless he had to. “Thursday? What day is it today?” How long had he actually gone without the Yin Fen? Jem wondered if he should see a doctor, but what would a regular doctor be able to do?
"Saturday afternoon," Tessa told him. "I think you've been asleep for nearly three days," she shook her head as another thought popped into her head. "You must be parched, I'll be right back," she told him them heading off to fetch two glasses of water from the kitchen.
Will focused on Jem, worried when Tessa had said they’d been asleep for so long, he looked at his parabatai in concern laying a hand on his forehead, “Sure you’re okay? Do you need more?” he indicated the yin fen as he spoke softly.
Jem couldn’t believe that he and Will had been asleep for over two days, but it made sense with how hungry he was at the moment, but he didn’t want either of them fretting over him too much, “I’m fine. I could go for some tea though.” He would take the water Tessa had left to get, but tea would help as well.
Tessa hurried to the kitchen and took two glasses out of the cupboard, filling them both after letting the water run for a few seconds. The water hadn’t been run for a few days so it would probably be cloudy with chemicals. Come to think of it, the boys hadn’t been up and awake for days. They were probably starving. She quickly returned to the room with that thought in mind. “I was thinking, you two must be so hungry,” she handed over the two glasses to them before stepping back and wiping her hands on her skirt. “I’ll make you lunch while you freshen up. Any requests?”
Will nodded, though his eyes still looked over his parabatai in concern, this was all very strange. “Sandwiches?” he suggested at Tessa’s question when she re-entered the room, “Nothing too heavy if we’ve been out of it for so long. Then you can tell us exactly what’s been happening around here”
Tessa smiled nervously. How was she supposed to tell them that she woke them both up with true love's kiss? "Sandwiches it is," she nodded and gave a little anxious laugh before heading back out to the kitchen to try and think quickly about how she was going to explain today.
