Ever since they’d taken a look around the house near the beach, the day he had first lured D’Artagnan into the ocean, it had been on Athos’ mind. D’Artagnan had loved it and in all honesty so had Athos. So a few days later he had made enquiries and somehow they now owned it. He’d taken a chance and hoped that D’Artagnan would be okay with it, he was about to find out.
He’d picked his boyfriend up and told him they were going to look at a house. He just hadn’t mentioned that it was their new house. He pulled up outside and the ‘For Sale’ sign now had a ‘Sold’ sticker on it, turning to D’Artagnan he held out his hand which had a key in it and he dropped it into his palm when he held out his hand. Smiling he said simply, “Welcome Home”
D’Artagnan was trying to maintain a more upbeat outlook about home hunting. It’d taken patience, it wasn’t a thing the boy was well versed in-but he was trying. They would find their home one day.
He just wasn’t aware that day was today. He’d expected another pretty thing they couldn’t have, he sure as hell knew the beach house they’d looked at a while back was way out of his own budget so he was half expecting another one of those. When Athos placed the key in his hand he looked up at him in confusion for a momen. “Are you serious?” When did Athos ever really make jokes about this sort of thing though? Still...
Athos smiled, “I’m very serious” he assured D’Artagnan, “You just seemed to fall in love with the place when we went round it before and I love it too. It seemed like the perfect fit for us so I took the initiative and now, it’s ours. If you want it to be” he added, because he really did want D’Artagnan to be happy, that was the most important thing.
“I did I just..” He paused as he looked around the place. He loved it the same as he did before, but he worried. “There’s no way I can afford this. Not unless we resort to cup of noodle for the next three years.” He laughed a little, thumbing at the key. It was just as warm and inviting as he remembered it, and so close they could walk down to the beach now if they wanted. Of course that meant he really didn’t have any excuses not to learn how to swim, but he’d worry about that when they got to it. For now he was still wrapped up in the beauty of it all. He couldn’t help but wander further inside in spite of his initial hesitation.
“It’s ours D’Artagnan. Bought and paid for. Everything is taken care of” Athos replied softly, he didn’t want D’Artagnan’s worries getting in the way of his enjoyment of their new home. He slipped an arm around his boyfriend's waist as they walked further inside. “Our home” he said with a smile, it felt right and he only hoped D’Artagnan thought so too. It was the perfect location as well as the perfect design. Spacious but not overly big and the pool would be the perfect swimming lesson starting point.
He had a million questions, but for the time being all of them were silenced as he walked alongside Athos. Worries seemed to melt away. “I can’t believe you.” D’Artagnan was in awe. “I had no idea. “ So many different emotions swirled in head. “When did you even do this?” His eyes filled with a soft warmth as he turned to face Athos. He leaned toward him to kiss him gently. “You are amazing you know that?”
“It’s been on my mind since we first came to look around. So I made some enquiries and then a few days later it was ours” Athos smiled into the kiss, “I’m glad you think so” he replied, relieved, “I was worried you wouldn’t like not being involved but it all happened really quickly”
“It’s perfect. “ He wasn’t upset in the least, quite the opposite actually. He really didn’t have any clue how real estate worked, but he didn’t care much either. They had a home again. A place to call their own, and no longer feel like guests in. He took Athos’ hand affectionately and laced their fingers. “It’s more than perfect. It’s ours.” He couldn’t stop smiling just then. “I am happy. All of it’s to do with you. Don’t doubt it for a second.”
Athos was very happy to see D’Artagnan so happy. His boyfriend should always be smiling, and Athos would try and make it so. He raised their joined hands to kiss D’Artagnan’s, “I won’t” he promised, “You make me happy too, you know that right? Now let’s go explore again, see if we missed anything. And we can decide if we want to redecorate”
Trying to get him to sit around to sign papers and wait for people to do things on the real estate side would have been a pain in the ass for everyone. So really it was better that Athos had taken care of it for all their sakes. He couldn’t help but smile at him. “I’m glad.” He squeezed his hand as his was drawn upward and let Athos decide what came next. “Lead the way love. “ While he didn’t have any real powerful decorating ambitions, he was starting to see ways they could make it theirs. Maybe add some places to display weaponry the dreams gifted them. “We should tell the others soon.” He knew Aramis and Porthos worried too, they would be pleased to hear their news. Maybe they could even do the whole domesticated house warming party thing. He grinned at the idea. “Though you know, there won’t be any convincing me now that you aren’t a count.” He would always tease him about that now. Especially since he’d been able to do all this in such a short time.
Part of Athos’ reasonings had been that he was sparing D’Artagnan the boredom of paperwork and, of course, he had also wanted to surprise him. Keeping hold of D’Artagnan’s hand he led them inside the house. In all honesty the decorating was pretty damn good. But, like D’Artagnan was thinking, there were little changes they could make which would give it more of a homely feel. Little stamps of their own to make it more their home. “We will, and we’ll invite them over for dinner or something. Remy too, Sharon, Anna” he listed, it would end up being more of a party no doubt. He laughed, “I’m not a count, I promise. Do they even exist anymore?” he asked thoughtfully.
D’Artagnan was grateful for both. Walking through that house and holding Athos’ hand he felt a sense of fulfilment. Like he could live there the rest of his life and be happy. He was surprisingly unafraid of just how domestic it was even with Remy’s teasing before about dogs and fences. He didn’t care much. “That would be perfect. Remy might mock though.” He shook his head with a faint amusement at the idea. “I don’t know. Maybe?” If they did exist, Athos was certainly one of them. It wasn’t every day someone just went to buy a beach house. “It’s beautiful. I don’t even hate the decorations.” And when they passed by one of the small window nooks he’d been wanting in the beginning, that smile only widened. “I don’t think it’s possible for this place to be anymore perfect.”
Athos felt the same. Walking through the house, their new home, felt right and it already felt to him like their forever home. He didn’t mind the domesticity of it all, in fact he rather liked that aspect of it. Athos shrugged, “I don’t care what anybody says as long as you’re happy” he said honestly. It was true that most people couldn’t simply buy a beach house but Athos wasn’t most people. He wasn’t a count but he was good with money and he came from a good family. “It has been decorated well” he agreed, “I think it’ll feel like ours just by moving our stuff in” he smiled.
“Just no picket fence.” He laughed at the comment. He could get behind it all except the American dream look. He really didn’t want to be seen as a little housewife on the prairie or something. Though, a dog might be nice at some point. He wouldn’t mind a dog. “I am happy though.” He couldn’t not be happy with a man like Athos even if he was a bit of a mystery at times. “Look.” He’d stopped in front of one of the little window nook places and smiled, tugging Athos a little closer to it. “It has everything I wanted.” He released his hand to touch the small cushion that he might have to replace later with a newer one, but really everything else about it was perfect. He sat down on it for a moment and drew Athos down with him to look at the view of the beach from it.
“You couldn’t spoil this house with a picket fence” Athos told him with a smile, though he also wouldn’t mind a pet at some point. Maybe one they could take to work so that it wouldn’t be alone all day while they were out. That might be nice. “I’m glad you are” Athos said, letting himself be tugged down as he took D’Artagnan into his arms to look out at the view, “This is kind of perfect you know. Snuggling here at the end of the day might be the best way to unwind” he said softly into D’Artagnan’s ear. He could see many happy days and nights spent in this house. This home. Their home.
He laughed at that and agreed. The fence thing was just a step too far for him. The corners of his lips curved into a smile at Athos words and his arm body against his own. He leaned back against him and rested his hands on top of Athos's own. "Know what we could do?" a mischievous tone to his voice. "Now that the place is ours..." His voice trailed off as his fingertips teased Athos's thigh.
“I really hope we’re thinking in the same direction” Athos replied with a grin as he lifted his hand to trail over D’Artagnan’s cheek to his neck holding him there as he leaned in to kiss him deeply. “It could take a while to christen every room in this place” he said once they parted.
He shifted to face Athos, that mischievous look reaching his eyes now as he leaned into that kiss. Amusement touching his tone as it parted. "We've got time. " He kissed him again, his hand pressed against Athos's chest for support. The warm sun felt good gently warning them through the glass windows. It was almost like something out of a ridiculous book. Everything for once was just going right. They had a home now, Aramis was on the mend, things were finally settling right into place.
