Aurora slammed the door of her car once she was inside. She locked the doors and put the keys in the ignition, hands shaking. She sped off as fast as she dared to go and dialed Maleficent’s number on her cell. “Pick up, pick up, pick up,” she murmured frantically. She didn’t want to look in her rear view mirror. She was afraid she’d be followed. And she didn’t want to see her face just now.
“Pick up, Mal, pick up…”
“Beastie,” Maleficent said, putting her phone on speaker. “I was just thinking about you. How would you like to go to Rio for brunch?”
That was not exactly what Aurora expected to hear, but it didn’t exactly sound bad, either. Still, she went with the detail she was most interested in at the moment. “Where are you?” There was an urgency in her voice, and a slight tremor.
“At the office. Putting in some extra work while we close a deal. Are you all right?” She’d heard that tremor in Aurora’s voice. “It’s not the paparazzi, is it?”
“He’s here...I think he trashed my apartment, someone did, anyway.” Aurora turned her car toward the office and glanced in her side mirrors. Nothing seemed to be following. “And he’s so, so mad…”
"He. Your father?" Mal stood, picking her phone up. "Take the private elevator, you know the code. No one can get into the building without a card or a prior appointment, you'll be safe here. I'll call the police to investigate your apartment." She actually swore under her breath. "What right does that man think he has?"
Aurora took a shaky breath. “Okay. I’m nearly there.”
Mal peeked out her office door, "Diaval, you---right. Damn it. Mary, take the rest of the night off.."
Her secretary rolled her eyes, but gave her a teasing smile. "Of course, Miss Tamsin." A torrid office affair, she was kind of jealous.
Once her secretary was gone, Maleficent started to pace impatiently in front of the elevator.
Aurora made it into the parking deck and parked, then ran for the private elevator. She punched in the access code and stepped inside. She wrapped her arms around herself, keeping her back to the door.
"Aurora..." Maleficent whispered her name, stepping into the elevator and wrapping her arms around her from behind. She kissed the side of her neck.
Aurora tensed for a moment, then leaned back into the embrace. She closed her eyes for a moment, gathering her confidence. Then she turned around to face Maleficent. Aurora’s lower lip was split and swollen, and there were two growing bruises on her right cheek, surrounding two abrasions that looked suspicious like the imprint of a ring. She met Maleficent’s eyes for a moment before closing them as they teared up.
Her breath caught in her throat, and her eyes flashed almost neon green. She touched Aurora's face, gently, exploringly. She wasn't just going to kill Stefan. No, she was going to ruin him. Crush him under her heel. She was going to destroy his life, take his fortune and all that he had worked for, and rub it in his face. Maleficent wouldn't be satisfied until Stefan Irons was living on the streets sucking cock to pay for his heroin addiction.
Though her voice was gentle, that angery undertone was still present. "You're staying with me tonight."
Aurora nodded and wrapped her arms around Maleficent, resting the uninjured side of her face against the faery’s shoulder. “He was waiting outside when I came out after seeing that my apartment had been trashed. He…” Her jaw clenched. “...you can probably guess what he had to say about us...about me.” Any doubts Aurora had about how little her father actually cared about her had been put to rest. Loudly. Punctuated with backhanded slaps that had left her feeling like her head might fall off.
“I pushed him into the pool and ran.”
"If he drowned I'll take care of it." She pressed her face into Aurora's hair, sqeezing her tightly enough to be painful. She was having a hard time not hyperventilating, herself. She thought they could add homophobia to the list of things that Stefan was a terrible person over.
“I think it would just slow him down a bit.” Aurora had no idea if he could swim or not, but she expected he was too stubborn to die that conveniently.
"Pity." Maleficent lifted Aurora up with her magic and floated her out of the elevator, and towards her private lounge. She laid her down, and produced a first aid kit. She stayed close enough for comfort.
Aurora relaxed on the couch, watching as Maleficent got the first aid kit. “Should probably...take a picture,” she said. “For documentation of what he did.” She didn’t like it, but it was a good idea.
Maleficent frowned, then sighed and got out her phone. She made sure the date would be preserved, then took a dozen pictures from every angle she could think of. "I wish I could say I couldn't believe that he'd do this...but he is much like the man from my dreams. Ambitious and selfish."
That, Aurora thought, did not exactly bode well for any meeting she might have with her father in her dreams. It also meant her aunts in the dreams had lied to her about her being an orphan. If she wasn’t an orphan, why she living in a cottage in the middle of nowhere with three “aunts” who probably weren’t any relation to her? Her face ached too much to think about that much, though. “I didn’t think he’d hit me. Yell, yes, but not...this.”
Oops. Spoiler alert.
She started to treat Aurora with a mixture of magic and regular first aid, not wanting to reduce the wounds so much as to be suspicious. "I forgot how bad his temper was. Even in this world I sometimes feared for myself."
Aurora frowned. “Did he ever hit you? Here, I mean.” The fact that “Mara” was an ex of his had made a brief cameo in his tirade.
"No. He hurt me in other ways." She didn't want to talk about it, instead putting the kit aside and kneeling in front of the sofa. She kissed Aurora's forehead.
Aurora reached up and stroked Maleficent’s cheek. “I’m sorry.” She wondered for a moment wh
at life with Stefan had been like for her mother.
He'd almost cost her her career, but Maleficent shook her head. "Shh. That is long in the past. You have been assaulted by your father. Your family.” She pitied Aurora’s mother. Pitied her.
“He’s never acted like family,” Aurora said softly. It was true. That didn’t make it any less painful. In both the emotional and physical way.
“I only wish…” She shook her head. “Nevermind. We’ll press charges. He’s not going to get away with this, I promise.”
Aurora nodded. “Thank you.” She leaned up to kiss Maleficent, then winced when her split lip reminded her of its existence. “Ow.”
That made the faery smile, but she stroked her fingers down the less bruised side of Aurora’s face. “So much for my plans to have you in the elevator.” her tone was lightly teasing.
Aurora blushed and grinned. “How about a raincheck for whenever this all...gets resolved.”
“The glass is one way,” she pointed out, helpfully.
"Not until I can kiss you really hard without splitting my lip open again," Aurora said firmly. "I like kissing you. I love kissing you. I don't love this busted lip."
“That is fair enough.” She made Aurora sit up so she could sit down, then guided her head back into her lap. “I am not going to kill him…”
Aurora smiled carefully as Maleficent rearranged them on the couch. This was nice. She needed that, because otherwise she was tempted to think of how her father was still out there, somewhere.
"I'd prefer you didn't," Aurora agreed. "And I don't want him to hurt you."
“I doubt he would be able to harm me. And if he tries anything in the business world, I will simply ruin him.” Except she was going to ruin him, she was going to ruin him and then not give him any change when she passed him in the street.
“I still wouldn’t put it past him to try.” Aurora sighed and took one of Maleficent’s hands in hers, lacing their fingers together. “But I feel safe with you.”
“Good, because you’re coming home with me tonight, and then you’re going to rest.” She wasn’t coming to keep her at her place, though. Maleficent would feel safer with Aurora in the same building as her, as much as possible.
“Resting sounds good. I want a break from...everything that’s led up to this...confrontation with my father.” Aurora closed her eyes. “I wish the Moors were here,” she said softly.
Maleficent thought about that. “I wish I could bring them to you, but I do not think my magic is that powerful.” Not without turning half the country into the Mmirs, complete with thorns.
"Mm." Aurora remembered something then and smiled. "I dreamed you told me I could stay with you forever in the Moors without having to wait for my birthday. I am glad I met you here when I was older than that, though." She gave Maleficent as much of a grin as she could manage without hurting her lip.
Maleficent smiled. “Mm. That was a pleasant dream.” Her voice was carefully articulated and toned. She knew what came next. Too soon. Aurora may not even want her protection after her next few dreams. “I’m glad too, otherwise this would be quite illegal.”
“Yeah. This is much better for here.” Aurora brushed her lips gently against Maleficent’s hand as she held it. This was nice. It was peaceful, and she could pretend--for a moment--that everything was alright.
"I...have grown greatly fond of you." She moved her fingers into Aurora's hair, stroking and caressing at the so very soft locks.
Aurora smiled. That, she suspected, was getting fairly close to a certain three word phrase. And it made her happy. “I’m very glad you have.”
“Rest,” Maleficent commanded, though her voice was gentle and her eyes fond. “Rest.”
Aurora relaxed and, in a little while, drifted off to sleep.
