Ana Lucia pulled up to the address that Mercy had given her, only a bit down the block where she said her garage was. She got out of the car and locked it behind her. Clad in jeans, a cotton t-shirt and the light jacket she used to throw on whenever she left in a pinch, she was ready to sit down and be inconspicuous in a nice, seedy, little bar. This whole network malfunction had been one part embarrassing and two parts curious (as it was forcing her to meet new people, something she needed to do anyway), and made for a great excuse to go out drinking.
Mercy was sitting on the hood of a project car out front, waiting for Ana. They'd talked a couple times, and Mercy had enjoyed the fact they looked almost identical, she'd have to remember that if she ever got a boyfriend, stupid humor was sometimes the best. She'd wave to Ana, it was startling to see her in public, but Mercy grinned. "They say every person has someone in the world they look like,I think we take that a step further?" She'd laugh softly. "Nice to finally meet you face to face. Damn if it's not like looking in a mirror." She'd hop off the car.
Ana Lucia had suspected they looked similar judging from the Valar message boards, but she hadn’t exactly been prepared for what seemed like a long lost twin. She halted her easy stride for a moment, brow furrowed for a second as she thought she was seeing things. Then she broke out into a grin that was similar to Mercy’s. “Damn, you’re not kidding.” she chuckled and stuck out a hand to shake. The difference in their voices were unique, however - Ana had a heavy New York accent, while Mercy’s was decidedly different. It was softer, midwest by the sounds of it, tempered by California.
Mercy smirked at Ana’s reaction, she’d been expecting it. “Nope. Not in the least. Awesome though right?” she smiled. Mercy had been born in Montana, then moved to the OC when she was a teenager, that midwestern flair to her voice had never left her though. It clung like a spiders web, tenacious and well, all her. “It’s almost disconcerting isn’t it?” she laughed again and took Ana’s hand. Hers was worn, there was oil that was never ever going away, but she had a firm shake.
"Almost," Ana laughed, shaking her hand just as firmly. Hers were not as worn, despite years as a police officer and as a soldier handling weapons and going to war.
"This one of your cars?" She nodded to the vehicle behind her face twin. She wondered briefly if Mercy would be up for a trip to New York one day just to mess with her mom. It would be hilarious to watch her stern faced mother get completely flummoxed.
"A project car, actually. Restore, sell, repeat. It keeps me out of trouble." She grinned at her. "I tend to have a couple at a time. Even though it's just me and my assistant here, some days I just can't focus on a customer's car and need something else to do."
Mercy would be up for such a trip. She's find it amusing and would love to see other people's reactions. After all, too, she might not even share the same heritage! Made it better. Funnier some how.
"That's a helluva hobby," Ana Lucia smirked. "Looks good." Not that she was much of a judge of classic cars. In New York City and even when they'd lived in New Jersey, owning a car wasn't much of a necessity with all the public transportation around. Ana didn't get her driving experience until she'd become a cop, really.
"So, wanna get our drink on?" She jerked her head towards the bar.
She laughed a bit. "It helps pay the bills, honestly" mercy shook her head and nodded. "Let's get our drink on. This city is turning us all into alcoholics" She pulled her hair off her shoulder and grinned at her friend and near!twin. It was pretty awesome in the long run.
Mercy grinned and headed off towards the dive bar she'd talked about. It was definitely one of those kinds of places, tough crowd. But that was okay. The place was dark, had booths, tables and a bar, there was music playing, and people drinking, all rough looking types.
When they entered the bar, Ana got the impression of a place that was a cross between the Star Wars Cantina and a Wild West saloon. It was rough types, but also some city types dressed down to be inconspicuous. But she could pick them out all the same by what they were drinking. Seemed like a good place to just lay low and chit chat about all the crazy without anyone giving a damn about what they might overhear.
Ana ordered herself a Sam Adams and waited for Mercy to get her drink.
Mercy ordered herself a jack and coke and nodded towards an empty booth. “Sit?” she’d ask over the din of the place. She smiled, though, when she said it. This place wasn’t awful, it was just a place to disappear for a little while.
And the dreams were certainly crazy, no one would even notice here.
Ana nodded and followed Mercy to the booth. She slid into the fake leather seating with a sigh. She glanced around from their vantage point in a dim side of the room. No one would bother two "twins" if they couldn't see them. All the better. She turned to Mercy and smirked. "To the OC. And all the crazy she brings." She lifted her glass in toast.
Mercy lifted her glass and laughed. "To the OC!" She'd gently clink her glass to Anas and take a swig. "What about your dreams that is bugging you the most?" She'd ask, watching Ana was like looking into a mirror, if she didn't know better she'd think they really were twins it was a little eerie.
"What doesn't bug me?" Ana said wryly, smirking. She sighed and left a hand around the ice cold beer as she thought about it. "I dunno. The fact I'm batshit crazy doesn't help. And that we can't figure out who these people are that are kidnapping my people."
Mercy leaned on a hand and listened. “Well batshit crazy never helps. Like, ever so that’s excusable.” she laughed softly. “But the fact people are being kidnapped almost perfectly, by the sounds of it, sounds like a massive migraine. I’d hate those, I think, I’d drive myself nuts in the here and now trying to figure it out.”
"That's pretty much what I've been going through," she admitted. "I want to know. The cop in me wants to get the bad guys and make ''em pay." Part of the dreams revealed that she had. It had been traumatizing to wake up to, for certain.
She took a swig of her beer and looked at Mercy. "What about you?" The resemblance was uncanny and she looked away at the glass before it got a little weird.
"Oh so far I've learned I was raised in a werewolf pack, that I've got a vampire friend, an alpha werewolf that was my first love as a housemate, a fae who sold me his garage and that if there's trouble I seem to be in the middle of it." She'd laugh a bit and take a sip of her drink. "The staff came from the fae, it's old and apparently had a mind of it's own and likes me"
Ana's look of bemusement must have been hysterically funny. "Wait...are you...a werewolf?" Her brow was furrowed as she tried to absorb all that. "And I thought vampires and werewolves didn't get along."
“I am not a werewolf. And generally they don’t get along but it seems I have a standing friendship with this one, and the rest tolerate me because he’ll kill them if I die. It’s.. confusing.” she ran her fingers through her hair. “Unlike the Werewolves, which came originally from Europe, I’m purely a Native creation. The closest word is Walker, unlike werewolves I’m not tied to the phases of the moon. I can change between one breath and the next, unlike them. But I don’t get their nifty healing or anything either. I uh, get to wander around like your typical coyote.” she grinned. “Coyote brings change and chaos, can you imagine something like that being raised in the middle of the biggest werewolf pack, which is all about hierarchy and rules and shit.” She sipped her drink. “I’m only okay with this because the dreams seem to keep hammering in the point I’m different than them and despite people not wanting to like me, like Vampires, they can’t help it.”
Ana Lucia stared at her facetwin in absolute shock. She was trying to process the idea of a Skinwalker being real. She'd heard the stories way back in school when they'd studied American History which of course included Native Americans. She just hadn't heard the term since then.
"So wait...you're Indian? And a skinwalker?" She regarded her and then broke into an impressed smile. "That is so badass." She chuckled. "I can just imagine the werewolves shitting a brick every time you upend things." She sipped at her beer, eyes shining with curiosity. "Can you do that now? Change? Did the dreams give you that power?"
“Yep, half Indian here and there, actually.” she’d laugh a bit. “And it’s not really skinwalker, they’re evil and take the skin of the animal they change into. They bring death and disease wherever they go. Walker is probably a better term, Avatar maybe even better. But yeah, god, it appeared I loved wrecking their merry little world.” she sipped her beer and looked up at her facetwin with a smile. “Yep. That was a joy to figure out. I sneezed while thinking about the dream that came with and uh next thing I knew, I had four legs and fur.” she laughed. “I can show you sometime.”
Whoops. Ana had clearly remembered some of her Native American history and mythology wrong. It made her wonder if somewhere back in her lineage there wasn’t Indian too, considering how she and Mercy looked to alike.
Ana laughed as Mercy described her first change. “Damn. That’s a helluva thing to have happen! What’d you do? I mean, what’d it feel like and how’d you change back? Does it hurt?” She was suddenly full of questions like a kid.
Mercy smiled a bit. "Took me a bit to remember from my dreams how to get back. It's kind of just thinking about it with the intent works. No pain, a few tingles but it's almost effortless. It felt... neat. Had to learn to use my nose and four legs, I'm still working on it." She laughed a bit.
"It's really nifty, I mean I never thought I'd do it, even after dreaming. Didn't really believe, you know?"
"Yeah, I bet. I mean who would seriously believe they'd be able to transform like that after dreaming? Damn I'm jealous." Ana laughed. "You're definitely going to have to show me."
“I totally will. As long as it’s not around too many people. Im not sure I want too many people to know.” she smiled softly. “It’s something else, honestly.” She drained her drink. “but damn do I wish i had the werewolves abilities.”
Ana Lucia laughed. “I bet. Who doesn’t want Werewolf abilities?” She looked around a moment, then drained her beer. “Hey, what if we tried it now, like out back. No one’s gonna see us.” She was brimming with curiosity now.
“Alright let’s go then.” she finished her drink and got to her feet. “Why not? It won’t hurt to show you.” she smiled.
Ana set down her glass and followed Mercy out. They made their way around the building and to the back, where there wasn’t a soul since the parking was all out front. It was a bit dark, but Ana’s eyes adjusted enough. “All right, girlfriend, show me what you got.” And she laughed.
Ana finished her drink as well. "Yeah healing instantly does sound attractive." She glanced about. "Why don't we try it. Out back. Away from the cars."
Mercy was a touch nervous but smiled. "Sorry, got to strip. Falling over my face because a bras stuck on my legs is no fun." She'd strip, and carefully hand Ana the clothes, before in a blink, going from human to a normal sized coyote. There was a tiny thrum of magic as it happened, no sound just a feeling. She'd shake off the tingles and give Ana a coyote grin. Before changing back, since she couldn't talk. She'd pull her clothes back on. "Soo?"
“Um okay.” Ana hadn’t expected her to strip, and awkwardly averted her eyes. It was weird, because they looked so alike, it was like watching her reflection undress. But when Mercy changed into a coyote, she stared, jaw dropping. “Holy shit...that’s awesome!” She had never seen a coyote in person, and was awestruck. Then Mercy changed back and Ana was startled and the abruptness, looking away and flushing. Really like looking in a mirror.
“Here,” she handed her the clothes, but she was smirking and trying not to laugh at how silly she was being. They were both women, it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. Besides, awesomeness coyote powers. “That was pretty badass. Just don’t do that in front of Sasha otherwise you’ll be her bff and won’t be allowed to change back.” She laughed.
Mercy didn’t have qualms with stripping in front of people. She’d beat up marines who laughed or teased, so people didn’t bug her. Of course she knew it was only for a moment anyways, but she smiled awkwardly at Ana. “Sorry I know that was random, but I figured out pretty quick getting out of clothes as a coyote is a lot harder than one thinks. Pants are easy, bras not so much.” she laughed a bit.
“Isn’t it neat? It took a little while to get used to but now it’s cool.” she smirked. “I’ve got some bonuses over the werewolves, I? am not tied to the moon. I can come and go as I please, or not as I wish. Suckers.” she grinned.
Ana laughed. “Yeah I can just imagine. Maybe you should just walk around free range.” She smirked, teasing. She grinned when Mercy pointed out the benefits of being what she was. “Those are some very good bonuses.” They started to walk back towards the garage. “Do you ever just kinda….wander off into the wild as a coyote? Just because you can? I’d probably try that, at least once.” Then she thought of something. “Wait, do you understand other coyotes if you encounter them?”
“Maybe but out here I’d probably get shot.” she laughed a bit then nodded. “I’d love to just wander off some days, it’d be fun, but I haven’t had the guts to do it yet. Maybe I’ll try it.” she ran her nails through her hair and ignored the fact she was hungry now. “I haven’t encountered any but I would assume so, senses and everything are exactly the same, and I don’t talk, so probably with some practice. I think Dream me doesn’t need to practice, though.”
Ana nodded. As they arrived at her car she smiled. “Thanks for the drink. And the ear. Facetwin.” She stuck a hand out. “We’ll have to do this again sometime.”
“Totally, my pleasure.” she smiled and took the hand. “Not too many people get to walk around and say they have a facetwin, it’s a fun experience. I’ll catch you later!” she smiled then headed for her car.
