Aurora chose a red dress to wear for her first really official, actually-going-out-somewhere date with Maleficent. She was excited. And just a little nervous, and hoping that no one decided to pop out at them with cameras just yet. Aurora wanted a things to be perfect.
Waiting to be picked up for a date was a lot harder than just driving to Maleficent’s, but it added to the excitement. Still, she kept looking out the viewing hole in her door every few minutes.
Mal went with something a little darker, that showed off her neck and shoulder. She drove up in a completely different car than the last one she’d driven with Aurora in, then slipped out to make her way to the door. She knocked, and smirked.
Aurora swung the door open, grinning. Her breath caught for a moment when she took in Maleficent’s dress. “You look...amazing,” she said, after a moment of just looking. This was really happening, and Maleficent was going to make people’s jaws drop. “I am such a lucky girl.”
“Thank you.” Maleficent’s eyes roamed up Aurora’s body, and then met the blonde’s gaze while inwardly finding herself bouncing. She was gorgeous. Maleficent wanted to lean in and kiss her, but that would smudge her makeup. Instead, she touched Aurora’s arm. “And nay, I am the lucky one.”
Aurora smiled and ducked her head for a moment. She took Maleficent's hand and gave it a squeeze before raising it to her lips for a feather soft kiss. "Lead the way," she said.
Her heart skipped a beat, but she led Aurora out to the car. It was small and sporty, just the sort of thing you’d expect a rich CEO to drive on a date with a much younger woman. She held the door for Aurora, then got in herself. “I hope you have exquisite taste.”
It was definitely a fun-looking, impressive car. Aurora smiled as Maleficent held the door for her. She climbed in and settled into her seat--it was comfortable, too, truly a luxury car. “I think it is, though probably not as exercised as yours. My boarding school often had various events and functions, but those tended to be chaperoned.” Aurora’s eyes twinkled. “This will be so much better.”
“Good, because what I intend would make any chaperone have a minor heart attack.” She winked, and took off.
The restaurant she’d chosen was in Los Angeles, so it was a bit of a drive, but it was the kind of place that starlets and movie stars went too. It was fairly high profile.
Aurora liked the sound of that, and she enjoyed the drive. It really was a fun car to be in. She was a little amazed when she saw where they were going. She’d heard of the place, sure, but never dreamed of going.
Maleficent was certain this would make the tabloids, but she didn't really care. It would come out sooner or later, and she'd rather enjoy the time in the spotlight before it all came crashing down. All part of her image, she supposed. And it would distract the competition.
Nothing to do with showing off her lovely date. Not at all. She guided Aurora inside, her arm looped through the blonde's. "They have stellar reviews."
Aurora nodded. “I’ve heard the food is amazing, not to mention the decor…” She trailed off as the entered and indeed, the place was a wonder to behold. “Wow…”
Her arm snaked around Aurora's waist for the rest of the walk to their table. She pulled the chair out for her, then seated herself. "I recommend the fish."
Aurora took her seat, grinning. “I’ll have to try it, then,” she said. “And I’m glad to hear any other recommendations you might have.” She paused for a moment. “Though I think I’ll pass on the wine while we’re here...just in case people notice and then figure out my age.” She didn’t want to get Maleficent in trouble, after all.
"That would probably be for the best," she agreed, though there was a mysterious smile on her face. She leaned forward, resting her chin on the tips of two fingers. "How have your classes been?" She looked genuinely interested.
“Well, things have just started back, but I think they’re going to really good,” Aurora said. “And I really like the campus, too.”
"Good. I could help you find another school, if we had to, but I'm glad that it's one that makes you happy." Like she could somehow twist arms to get Aurora moved.
She probably could.
Aurora smiled. “Thank you. And I’m sure you could.” It was nice to know for future reference. Like
if she decided to go to look into grad school somewhere else down the line.
"I can name a few off the top of my head, but that's neither here nor there." She smiled, knowing she was bragging, but not really caring. She still didn't understand what drew Aurora to her. Or why Aurora's goodness was like a light that she constantly yearned for. It is what it is, and Maleficent was trying to accept it.
About that time the waiter came to take their orders. Aurora ordered the fish and glanced at Maleficent for any other suggestions.
“For dessert, you must try the flan.” There was a choice of several items off of the dessert course. Mal wasn’t picky. She really wanted to just devour Aurora.
“Then I will.” Aurora grinned at Maleficent and finished ordering. Once the waiter left, she glanced around. It really was an amazing place. “Have you been here often?”
“Twice. Once was a business meeting and the other was sort of a date.” Maleficent smiled, though the expression was tight. It hadn’t been Stefan, of course, and it had been entirely for making a contact, but she hadn’t enjoyed it.
Aurora nodded thoughtfully. She didn’t press Maleficent for more information; it seemed like she wouldn’t share more, and anyway, it wasn’t really Aurora’s business. “I’m glad you’ve been here. That way you know what’s good.” She grinned.
"I caution you that it's been about a year. As long as they still have that amazing chef, though, it should be fine." The restaurant's food wasn't as good as it's reputation, but was still much better than most places. At least as far as Maleficent was concerned.
“I see. Let’s hope the chef is the same!” Aurora took Maleficent’s hand across the table and gave it a squeeze. “Whether the food is as amazing as it could be or not, at least the company is amazing.”
“I know I am amazing.” She flashed her trademark smile at Aurora, lifting her hand up and kissing Aurora’s fingers lightly. “the paparazzi are going to love this.”
Aurora flushed slightly. “You think they’ll show tonight?” Considering where they were, it was very likely. It wasn’t like her father would actually notice, anyway. He rarely took an interest in her life, after all.
"I think they already have, they've just gotten very good at hiding." She wondered if Stefan would see and a part of her wanted him to. Like she was driving the knife straight through to his heart. She'd relish that.
Aurora had to fight the urge to look around. It was definitely a good thing that she’d decided to skip the wine this time. She took a long sip of her water. That’s one thing that she hadn’t missed out on with her father rarely being involved in her life. The reporters hadn’t had much reason to be interested in her. Yet.
"Please, relax. There is nothing to be worried about, and I can have my assistant issue a statement if something comes up." She didn't think it would, but it was best to be safe.
“Okay.” Aurora took a deep breath. “I’m with you. That’s what matters.”
Maleficent appeared concerned for a moment, then let the subject drop. She realized she didn’t know as much about this girl as she would have liked. Her favorite color, her favorite movie. Things she should know, she supposed, if they were going to carry on like this.
She smiled. “What sort of movies do you like?”
“I like period dramas,” Aurora said. “I like the costuming, for one. And it’s sort of like looking back in time. Or into other versions of time, with the ones bend things a bit more.” Aurora tilted her head at Maleficent thoughtfully. This was actually a really good sort of thing to talk about. “What sort of things do you like to watch?”
"Is that what you want to do with your life?" Her smile only grew wider. "I've always been fond of fairytales. Surprising, I know, all things considered. I'm usually so practical." She'd always felt a kinship for the misunderstood.
“It’s fun. I don’t think I’d actually want to go back in time, though. Too many things could go wrong.” Aurora grinned at Maleficent’s admission of liking fairy tales. That seemed...fitting, somehow.
“I mean, do you wish to do costuming? Or even acting?” She thought that it could go either way. She tried to imagine Aurora in some grand period dress and it was an appealing image. “Or do you just like watching?”
“Oh! Well, I do think the costumes are lovely. I don’t know I’d actually want to make them, though, not professionally, at least.” Aurora smiled thoughtfully. “I don’t think I’d want to act, though.”
“You should chose the thing you want, not that which your father has chosen for you. Whether you like it or not, he has attempted to guide you into what he wants. Not what you want.”
Aurora had to admit there was...some truth in that. She nodded slowly. “I think I’ll...work on figuring things out as I go through college. There are so many electives, and money’s not issue, so I can take basically anything I want to.”
"When you find what you love, seize onto it and never let go." There was genuine passion in Maleficent's voice, as though there'd been something long ago that she'd let go. She couldn't even remember what it was, only that she'd lost it.
There was something in Maleficent’s voice that made Aurora pause. Maybe in this world, too, Maleficent’s “wings” had been taken. That thought made her want to find something for herself that was just hers, not her father’s. It also made her more determined to make things work with Maleficent, paparazzi and other problems be damned.
“Aurora?” Maleficent forced herself to calm down. She looked worried. “Did I frighten you?”
Aurora shook her head. “You didn’t frighten me. It’s good advice.” She took Maleficent’s hand and brought it to her lips.
“I worry, that when you find out how ruthless I can be in certain ways, that you will be disappointed.” It took a lot for Maleficent to admit that. It took everything.
“You’re a woman in a field where there aren’t always many women. Some of it’s survival. That doesn’t mean I’ll like it, but that also doesn’t mean I wouldn’t help you think of alternatives that might work just as well.” Aurora sighed. “And I’m eighteen and still figuring out who I am and who I want to be. And you could have your pick of anyone, I know that. But somehow...I know it, but I’m not afraid of that, not really. I just don’t want you to ever decide you need to push me away ‘for my own good,’ all right?”
Maleficent was silent for a moment, her eyes studying the blonde. It seemed as though her face was cast in shadow. "There's no one I've ever wanted more."
Aurora smiled. Three words came to mind as a response to that, but again Aurora wasn’t sure if the moment was right, even if it was an amazing moment. So she settled for something else that was also true. “I’m really glad.”
