Tony was in his office. The outer office, the one farthest away from the lab. The one at the end of the hallway. He was sitting at the computer, not sure where either of his personal assistants were, and was working on some code on the computer screen. It was boring work, he had a lot of it to do, too, if he was going to re-create the AI from his dreams. The Jarvis program. He sighed in frustration, then deleted a row of code to re-write it.

Elizabeth had headed straight up to the offices where she had taken lunch with Pepper the week before, but she hadn’t found her. So she moved to the next office and knocked hoping her friend would answer. She waited for a second, then knocked again before she saw someone move from behind a computer screen, spot her and answer the door. That someone just so happened to be Tony Stark. She smiled at him through the glass.

Tony lifted his eyes from the screen and saw the brunette through the glass. He raised an eyebrow. This was one of Pepper’s friends, right? He was sure he’d seen her before. He tapped a couple of buttons on a keypad next to his desk, and the door swung open to admit her into the office.

Elizabeth entered the room as the door swung open. “Good afternoon Mr Stark,” she smiled politely. “How are you? I’m Elizabeth Weir a friend of Pepper’s,” she introduced herself, holding out a hand to shake his.

“Oh, that’s right. Elizabeth.” Tony stood up from his desk to shake her hand, then motioned for her to have a seat. “I can send Pep a note and let her know you’re here,” he offered, and slipped back down into his own chair. “Was she expecting you today?”

“Please to meet you,” Elizabeth smiled. “That would be great, I was hoping to steal her away for a lunch date if that’s alright?” she asked, sitting down where Tony suggested.

“Sure, sure. I don’t necessarily need her today for lunch,” Tony teased. It was awesome they worked in the same building. They got to see each other every day. For Tony, it meant a pleasant distraction, but comfort and support. He hoped that it meant the same for Pepper.

He clicked a few things on his computer and sent her a message. “I’m not sure where she is at the moment, but that should catch her attention.”

“Wherever she is, she’ll be working too hard, you can guarantee that,” Elizabeth joked, knowing what Pepper was like. “She’ll see it and reply, I’ve no doubt. The woman is nothing if not capable of multi-tasking,” she laughed, running a hand through her hair. “So, Pepper’s told me a lot about you. Do I need to give you the ‘hurt her and you’ll regret it’ speech or are we beyond that?” she teased gently with a little smile. From what she’d heard, Tony was dedicated to Pepper and Pepper loved him, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have a little play.

Tony chuckled softly. “There’s no need.” No need for the speech for a couple of reasons. One, Tony would rather give his life than hurt Pepper. And two, Elizabeth wasn’t in a position to make threats. It was sweet, though, to hear that Pepper had a friend who cared so much about her. “How long have you known Pep?”

“Well good then, I guess we can be friends,” Elizabeth laughed, sitting back in her chair. “We met at college actually. Kept in touch sporadically over the years and then earlier this year we found out we were both living in this fair city. Yourself?” she asked curiously.

“She’s always been there.” Tony said. “Even when I didn’t know she was there, she was there. In here.” He tapped his chest, right over the arc reactor.

"That...is incredibly sappy," Elizabeth grinned. "But nice to hear, but seriously, how did you two first meet?"

Tony laughed. “Yeah, I guess it is. It’s not as if I get sappy over a lot of things, so… I think I’m allowed this one. You should ask her. She knows all the details better than I do.” He added, grinning. “I don’t remember any of it, really.”

Elizabeth nodded, pressing her lips together slightly. Interesting he didn't remember how they met. She knew Tony had a reputation for being a ladies man and maybe he had been in the throes of it when he met Pepper and she changed him. Regardless, she'd ask Pepper when she saw her next. "She's worth being sappy about. She's smart, extremely capable and dedicated. Always has been and it's paid off for her professionally, but she deserves to have it pay off personally too," she smiled at him kindly, knowing that Pepper felt that way about him right now. "She could do with some more free time for lunch though," she winked at him. "Let's face it though, she'd never take it," she laughed.

“Hey, it’s not my fault that she’s a work-aholic,” Tony said, breaking into a grin. “I try to get her out more. I really do.”

“You make me sound worse than you and you know that’s really not possible, Tony” Pepper said, entering the office with a smile teasing at the edges of her lips. “Having fun talking about me?” she asked them both pointedly.

"Always," Elizabeth smiled back as she got up. "We were comparing how you were in college against how you are now, it was a short comparison," she joked and cast a wink in Pepper's direction. "I've come to steal you away for lunch. I even got the boss' permission," she tilted her head in Tony's direction.

Tony jumped up out of his seat to move around the office and greet his girlfriend--his better half, really--with a kiss and a one-armed squeeze. Nothing too big, just a little something to show her how he’d missed her. He grinned a cheeky grin. “I always like talking about you. And giving you permission to go out to lunch, of course.” Ha--as if she needed permission.

Pepper rolled her eyes at her friends joke before returning Tony’s kiss, “Aww how sweet” she said to Tony before looking at Elizabeth, “It’s good to let him think he’s the one who runs this place” she winked before grinning at Tony and kissing his nose cheekily.

“It’s the best way,” Elizabeth winked back, picking up her handbag and putting it on her shoulder. “Otherwise it just gets messy and we end up sorting it out anyway,” she grinned. It was lovely to see Pepper so happy and obviously loved. “You sure I’m not whisking you away from anything too important?”

She was so adorable that Tony could spit. He had to do something about that. His hand moved down to her backside and gave a pinch. “Nah, nothing too important.” He said, giving her a wink. “Go on. Have fun with your girl friends.”

Pepper couldn’t stop the squeak at the pinch and swatted Tony’s arm but she was smiling so he knew he wasn’t really in trouble. “Nothing at all” she assured Elizabeth, “Being whisked away sounds great”

“Alright love birds, enough of that,” Elizabeth rolled her eyes and stepped forward to take Pepper’s arm. She headed to the door with a grin on her face. “I’ll have her back before curfew,” she called over her shoulder as she dragged her friend out of the room.

Tony released his grip on his girlfriend, giving her backside a gentle pat as she was drawn from his arms. “Thank you, Elizabeth. I will hold you accountable if something happens to her.” He said, and tossed the girls a wink before turning back to his desk.
