Who: Hiccup and Astrid What: Hiccup brings over caffeinated beverages so he can get into her bed. When: First night of the sleeping curse. Where: Astrid's apartment. Rating/Warnings: Medium, awkward talks about losing virginities. Status: Complete!
The two of them finally acting on the mutual attraction had drastically changed the dynamic of their entire friendship. If you asked Hiccup then he would say it made it a million times better and he hoped that Astrid felt the same way. He wouldn’t go so far as to say that they were dating because he had quickly realized you don’t tell Astrid what to do and what labels they were because if anything she had to make the decision. But for now he was just going to say they were good friends and there was nothing wrong with that.
So he readily agreed to go get coffee for her and felt guilty that the barista put her number on one of the cups, but he did make sure to take a photo of it just in case. Could you blame him? He was just a teenage guy and he would probably never use it. Once the coffee was procured he was able to make his way over to her apartment and shifted his weight to his actual leg before ringing the buzzer and waited for her to respond.
It took a good minute before she opened the door. She was about to say hi - but it was interrupted by a gaping yawn and instead, she motioned him over into her home.
"You're the beeeest," Astrid said sincerely, her voice thick of sleep, and made grabby hands at the coffee. "Dozed off again, and when I woke up I could have sworn my carpet turned into a forest."
“I seriously think you accidentally took some acid or something,” Hiccup couldn’t help but point out as she made her grabby hands. Not wanting to be injured over coffee he held out her cup and stepped into the apartment. It had to be something on the network that was causing it because he saw a lot of posts about it, “Maybe it’s the water. A lot of people are talking about this kind of thing.”
“Water, airbourne virus, random phenomenon, whatever. I’m so over it.” She let out a heavy sigh and slumped, like all air was sucked out of her body and she was deflating. Astrid took a large gulp and swallowed, looking a little pained. “Wow. That’s strong. Good job. You’re the--” then she saw the phone number on the cup. “--best? Ugh, you weren’t kidding. Really? Who does that anymore?”
“Of course I wasn’t kidding. This girl apparently needed to make sure that she passed it along. I was slightly impressed by the fact that she put it on the cup with your name on it and not the one with mine on it,” he pointed out with a bit of a shrug as he went over to her and looped an arm around her so he could get her out of the doorway and towards something soft, “Maybe it was more of a ‘you may have a girlfriend but here’s my number anyway because I’m a homewrecker’ type of thing.”
“Are we going to the bed or the couch? You look like you’re going to just melt into a sleepy puddle in any second.”
Oh, Hiccup. Such a way with words. Astrid rolled her eyes to try and make it seem like he was being annoying, but that little smile her lips did said otherwise. “Couch. Couch. No bed. I’ll fall asleep. I can’t take these nightmares. I’m tempted to start an IV drip of caffeine.” She admittedly looked a little rough - messy hair, droopy eyes. Her wardrobe consisted of sweat pants and an old t-shirt.
She took another sip of coffee, and then stared at him strangely. “Hey. Why aren’t you having sleep issues like everyone else?”
Despite looking rough Hiccup still thought she was the most beautiful girl ever. And he would never ever tell her that. When asked why he wasn’t falling asleep she gave a little shrug of his shoulders as he helped her make her way towards the bedroom, “No idea. I get to be one of the lucky unaffected ones? And I’m not letting you start an IV drip of caffeine. You would die.”
When they finally reached her bedroom he helped her get onto the bed before joining her. He reached out a hand to tuck some hair behind her ear and leaned over to kiss her cheek, “No falling asleep on me, okay? But I guess if you do then I’ll just have to suck it up. You got Jurassic Park 3 running around somewhere?”
One eye closed at the kiss, and feeling the bed and him on it suddenly made her feel way too comfortable. More than she normally should, but she chalked it up to the whole sleep situation. The last thing Astrid really wanted to do was fall asleep and get sucked into those nightmares again. It hardly felt like she’d been getting any sleep because of them.
“It’s next to the TV, in the DVD case,” she pointed over, sitting upright and holding onto her coffee tightly. “You’re my favorite.”
Exhausted, delirious ramble. That’s what that was. Maybe.
“I better be,” he commented as he got up to go grab the dvd and placed it in the player. He grabbed all the remotes in the area and brought them back to the bed with him. If she fell asleep then this would be his only savior and he wasn’t going to leave one of them hanging out by the tv in case it was important.
Once back on the bed he moved close to her and looped an arm around her, “I kind of like this whole super sleepy look on you. Makes you a lot more like a kitten. You’re more likely to be cute and soft instead of hard and scary like when you’re awake. Although I think you’re done being hard and scary around me now.” It was true. She was acting more warmly towards him now and he was certainly pleased by that turn of events and now he was starting to ramble with her.
“Hey, I’m not hard and scary!” Astrid huffed, almost a little insulted, but then she thought about it. She wasn’t always the nicest one, and she had a habit of sometimes - and only sometimes - being cold. But she wasn’t that bad, was she?
But damn, even after saying that, she still decided it was a good idea to cuddle up against him. He felt warm and soft and maybe, just maybe having him by her would drive the nightmares away.
Stupid to think, almost. Not like he was a dreamcatcher with legs.
“And don’t forget. Kittens have claws,” she said, smile turning mischievous as her nails raked up his chest; hard enough to make them known, still light to be harmless.
“It’s true, you’re an extremely scary kitten,” He teased as he reached down to take her hand into his and twine their fingers together. It was cute how she was acting right now and he wished that he could hold onto this moment for a long time, “But now we’re going to watch scary dinosaurs and I’m extremely glad you don’t act like any of them.”
The he took a pause and considered it, “Okay, you can be a brontosaurus or whatever it’s called because they’re kinda cute even if they cover you in snot.”
“If my nightmares involve dinosaurs, I’m playing the blame game and pointing fingers at you. And I’d be the dinosaur with sharp teeth. Maybe not T-rex sharp.” Astrid smiled to show her teeth, then let out a small ‘rawr’ and leaned in to what looked like a possible bite to the cheek. Instead it was just a kiss, and then a sleepy giggle against his skin. “This sleep thing sucks so bad. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this point.”
“I’m kind of enjoying this, so go with laughing. I don’t want you to cry,” he admitted with a playful smile as he leaned in and nuzzled at her neck. It was making for some interesting cuddling so far and he wondered how much of the movie she would actually remember once this craziness wore off, “Besides, I’m really resisting the urge to make out with you again because I don’t want you to crash and burn in the middle of it. So now I get to brush up on my cuddling skills.”
“Your cuddling skills seem pretty decent so far, actually.” She bit her lip, fighting the widening of her smile and draped her leg over one of his. “But it’s just the beginning, so, the quality could slip. Not sure.”
Talking seemed to have been keeping her awake. She didn’t look so exhausted now, but she knew if they were lulled into a comfortable silence, her lids were closed and she’d plunge back into the land of really messed up, whacky nightmares.
All joking aside, though, her fingers gave his hand a squeeze and she glanced up at him in all seriousness. “You can stay the night, you know. It’s not like it’s a big deal, right?”
“That’s way harsh, Astrid, I can’t believe you would judge my cuddling skills so harshly. The quality will never slip, it can only go up from this point forward. Especially if you pass out and I’m still here, that gives me automatic points,” he pointed out to her. Okay, he really didn’t know if that was possible or not, but the quality of cuddling couldn’t go down as long as he was there beside her.
He moved slightly so he could tuck her up against him and they were completely pressed against each other. It was far more comfortable and he was resisting the urge to do anything where they were laying down because she would be more likely to pass out in that position. When she squeezed his fingers and said he could spend the night he couldn’t fight the grin on his face, “I didn’t want to assume. And I’m sure it’s not a big deal if our clothing stays on.”
The level of comfortness went up way high, and she did her best to fight a yawn. Of course, she failed, but her grip on him was tight. It was almost as if she had her own personal teddybear to sleep with through the night. Something nice to wake up to if the nightmares startled her awake again. Astrid figured she got a little lucky in the sleep lottery; no hallucinations for her, and she’d rather keep it that way.
“It’s nice to have someone in bed. At night. In the dark,” she murmured, her voice sounding sleepy, and she played with the fabric of his shirt. “In case I wake up from something bad.”
She didn’t even know if what she said was making any sense. The exhaustion was muddling her up a little bit and she rubbed her eyes, trying to stay awake.
“I’ll be here to protect you if you do,” he spoke in a gentle voice, but it was the most sincere she had probably ever heard him be. There were things in the dreams that happened that he didn’t know if she had dreamt yet, but she meant a lot to him in there and it was translating over into this life. Certainly things were different, but his feelings for her were going to stay the same and god help his poor soul if she ever decided to break his heart.
“I can try and google some ways to stay awake if you want,” he offered as he gently knocked against her a few times to try and get her to stay awake.
“Googling things means you have to move,” she replied disapprovingly. Almost with a whine, actually, and her hold on him even tightened just a tad bit more. Astrid wasn’t moving and she was too stubborn to let him go - not after he’d gotten her so comfortable. Not happening. “Don’t google. Google can wait until tomorrow. You’re trapped.”
That earned a laugh from him, “Alright, alright. I won’t do any kind of googling, but we’re going to have to keep you talking or something. Or else you’re just going to fall asleep. I probably shouldn’t have you in a comfortable cuddle either, but I’m not going to complain about that one.” At least he brought her coffee and she could use the caffeine in that to stay awake for a while longer. Good thing he didn’t have access to cocaine because he would probably be tempted to bring that over for her as well, but he was more about being safe than staying awake.
“There are other ways to keep me awake. Where you don’t have to move.” Astrid raised an eyebrow suggestively. “Too much, anyway.” As if she was giving him a hint, a hand crawled up under his shirt to touch bare skin. “Clothes on, and all.”
“I -- er --- what?” he spat out nervously. The touch of her hand on his bare skin had sent a shiver down his spine and he could feel the goosebumps on his arms. Holy hell, was she trying to kill him? Hiccup was certain that she probably was. And given his limited time around girls he wasn’t even sure what she was suggesting just yet. Poor innocent boy.
The nervousness was admittedly cute. Her lips widened into a devious little smile despite sleepy eyes. “Why so confused? What do you think I’m talking about?” Her voice sounded so falsely innocent, all done on purpose of course. She dipped her head up and pressed a soft kiss against his lips. “You’re almost...I dunno. Nervous?”
“I don’t know. Of course I’m nervous,” he squeaked out the last word a bit. Yep, she was definitely getting to him and he was suddenly not as suave as he liked to think he was. However, he did manage to return that kiss upon those devious lips and when it broke he just stared at her. She was finding out that he could talk a big game, but when it came to her and what was happening right now he was a bumbling mess, “Haven’t you seen fault in our stars? There’s that thing about one legged virgins. That’s so me right now.”
“I’m not sure what I want to ask about more right now,” Astrid began, blinking with utter confusion. “You watching Fault in Our Stars, or your virginity.” Actually, come to think of it, it was safe to assume Hiccup was a virgin, unless he found some sort of tribe in the woods and experimented with the chief’s daughter. She shrugged, planting another kiss on his lips, this time a little deeper. “Don’t worry about it. You guys get it easy in the virgin department. Really easy.”
“It was a good movie,” he murmured as his cheeks began to turn pink. He wasn’t doing the best at not completely mucking this up, but she was continuing to kiss him, so he had to be doing something right. His brow furrowed after the kiss and her comment about having it easy. Of course she wasn’t a virgin, it made sense, she was far more worldly than he was - they were in her apartment and he was living with his parents. He pulled away and sat up a little straighter, “Is this seriously happening or am I in a potential nightmare where you turn into a TRex and eat me?”
“What do you mean?” Good job, Hiccup. This was keeping her awake. She propped her head up with a hand and rested her elbow on the pillow, still keeping up close and personal against him. “You admitting you actually liked the movie, or us discussing your virginity?”
“The discussion of virginity is far more important than that stupid movie,” he pointed out to her. He was way more concerned with potentially losing his virginity right now than losing cool points for liking that tear jerker. He reached up to run his hands through his hair, a nervous habit, and he arched an eyebrow at her, “Do you actually want to have sex or are you just being the worst girlfriend ever?”
Oh shit. He didn’t meant to blurt that part out, “Not girlfriend in that sense. You’re a girl who is my friend. A very attractive girl at that. One that I would definitely not mind having sex with. But if you’re just doing this to tease me then just kill me now.” Yes, please. Kill him and his rambling mouth now before he continued to dig his hole deeper.
Well, there were certain words Astrid wasn’t expecting to come out of Hiccup’s mouth. The first one was ‘sex,’ and the second one was ‘girlfriend,’ and both were blurted out in the same sentence. It caught her off guard and if she wasn’t exhausted, she’d actually look pretty surprised.
“You’d have sex with me? Really?” She didn’t know why that part confused her, but it kind of did. “I mean, I’d have sex with you.” Oh my god, exhausted-blurting, coming through. “But...not tonight. Not like this. Not to Jurassic Park 3, and definitely not at a time where I could fall asleep at any moment.”
Imagine falling asleep during sex? That would be Astrid’s luck. And on Hiccup’s first time? That would ruin his self-esteem for the rest of his life.
“Wow, we really are talking about this…uhhhhh.”
“Why wouldn’t I have sex with you? Look at you, you’re amazing,” he blurted out. Why in the world was she so surprised that he would have sex with her. He would have to be some kind of idiot not to see how beautiful she was and he was totally crushing on her (more than crushing). But then he was instantly distracted by the fact that she just said she would have sex with him. This had to be some sort of result of the sleepiness thing that was going around.
“So, we aren’t going to have sex tonight, but you want us to have sex some day in the future?” he wanted to make sure he was getting that right. Because honestly, he could deal with that. Just knowing that she felt this way about him was giving him a great ego boost, “Then what did you want to do tonight? Obviously you want clothes off.”
The more he mentioned sex, the pinker her cheeks got and Astrid wasn’t the type to deal with embarrassment and awkwardness very well. She took in a deep breath and let it out in a single sigh, resting her head back down and pulling him in closer by the tug of his shirt. She kept their legs tangled as an entrapment and leaned in for another kiss, just to kind of ease them back into the comfort they had before this entire conversation.
“Don’t over think things,” she whispered, rubbing the tips of their noses together. “Let’s just...be comfy tonight.” Whether that meant kisses or no kisses, clothes or no clothes. “And for the more serious stuff...if it happens, it happens. Takes all the fun out if you try predicting it.”
He wanted to make a witty retort about how he never overthinks, but he knew that wasn’t true at all. He was out of his element with her and he was second guessing everything. But the moment she pulled him back down and rubbed her nose against his it signaled that he needed to chill out. “Okay, I won’t think about that. Just focus on the sleeping beauty in front of me,” after he spoke he leaned forward and captured her lips with his own for a deep kiss. Yes, it had been a cheesy line, but it was absolutely true.
