Effie was cuddled up on Haymitch’s sofa with a cup of tea. She had her shoes off, her feet curled up under her. She felt at home at Haymitch’s place, felt more comfortable there than she did at the Old Man’s house. Ironic, considering the Old Man’s house was supposed to be her own house, and yet she felt like she was walking on eggshells the whole time she was there.
She turned to look over as Haymitch came back into the room, watching his body move with obvious affection and desire. “Hi there”
Haymitch had to admit that his place felt more like a home since Effie had taken to coming over more often. He liked how comfortable she was around him and his things and it felt right that she was there.
Smiling as he came back, his own tea and a selection of biscuits in his hands he put them on the table before sitting down next to her and pulling her to him to snuggle with her. “Hey” he said kissing her softly, “You okay?” he asked when they parted.
They were probably not being smart about this whole thing. Her car was out in front of his place. She wasn’t trying to hide that she was here by any stretch of the imagination. She had excuses, but they were flimsy and often times she didn’t even bother. The Old Man didn’t know or didn’t see because he didn’t want to. That must be it.
She moved when he pulled her against him, and snuggled close. She returned the kiss, feeling emotion swell within her. “Better now you’re back.”
They weren't being smart at all, ironic since they were both highly intelligent people. But with each other they turned into airheads in love it seemed. Not that either of them minded.
"Getting all soft and sappy on me?" He teased her, hands keeping her close.
Effie broke into a grin, moving just a hair closer to him on the sofa. Any closer, and she’d be in his lap. Not that either of them minded. “Maybe.” She said, playfully. “I can’t help the way I feel.”
"Not complaining sweetheart" he told her before claiming her lips, pulling her onto his lap at the same time because he might as well.
Sometimes it felt like they were teenagers again. Cuddling and making out on the sofa, playfully pawing at each other, sneaking around because they had to. It was exciting and illicit, and he made her insides twist with desire and excitement. She kissed him in return, hands tangling in his hair.
It was exciting and daring and yet Haymitch knew there was a deeper undercurrent between them. It was a dangerous feeling and he was refusing to acknowledge it right now. His hands slid over her body as they kissed, loving the feel of her under his hands even through the clothing barrier.
They really should talk about it. Effie knew they needed to. She’d been thinking about him more and more and almost letting things slip that shouldn’t have. It was getting even more dangerous. Finally, she broke her mouth from his to breathe, nuzzling her nose into his cheek. “...you make me feel things I thought I’d never feel again.”
Haymitch knew the talk needed to happen. Effie was married to a client of his for goodness sake. But he didn’t want to. If they let reality in there was a chance they’d need to end it and Haymitch didn’t want to let her go. “I know exactly what you mean” he told her nuzzling her back playfully, “You do the same to me”
Effie was grinning so brightly it made her cheeks hurt. She shrugged her shoulders. “All in a day’s work, I suppose.” And then she drew out her cell phone to check the time. “I have to be getting back soon. He’ll be arriving home.”
Haymitch wanted to see her that happy all the time, she was so beautiful and kind and deserved happiness. He nodded, “I wish you didn’t have to go” he told her before he could stop himself.
“I wish I didn’t have to, either, but… I do.” She said, turning to look at him with eyes that begged for him to give her a reason to stay.
His hands tightened around her, “Stay. Tell him you’ve been with friends. Tell him anything but stay with me”
Effie leaned in and kissed him again, brief but with fierce passion. Then she pulled back. “I will. But… this won’t last forever.”
“It could” Haymitch told her, “If you didn’t ever go back”
“You and I both know that can’t happen.” Effie responded, softly. Though she wished it could.
“I don’t know that” Haymitch said, “We could be together always” he looked at her seriously.
“I’m married to another man,” Effie said, stating the obvious. That was what was keeping them apart.
"You don't have to be" Haymitch pointed out, marriage wasn't a permanent thing.
Effie frowned a little. “Haymitch… I married a wealthy, powerful man. And I signed legally binding documents before our marriage contract. If he finds out about this--about us--it would be very, very, very bad.”
“And I have lawyers” Haymitch informed her, “We could work it out. I can’t lose this, can’t lose you” He knew it was crazy, knew how powerful her husband was but he didn’t care. He needed Effie.
“I don’t think we can afford the kind of lawyers that it would take to get me out of this,” Effie said, softly. She lifted a hand to trail her fingers down his cheek, then leaned in and kissed him again. “We just have to… be careful.”
It was frustrating but he couldn’t and wouldn’t push the issue. Maybe part of her didn’t want to leave him, who knew. He kissed her back instead and nodded, “Okay. We’ll be careful”
“Unfortunately,” Effie kissed him again. “Careful means I have to go.” She said, and pressed her lips to his once more.
He knew she did, but god he wished she didn’t. He didn’t want her ever going back to that man but right now, he was powerless to stop it. He pulled her close and kissed her deeply with emotion and passion, “Something to remember me by” he said against her lips.
The kiss was beautiful. It was powerful, and emotional, passionate and hungry. It ended before she was ready for it to. “You know I could never forget.” She whispered back.
“I hope so” he whispered in return, holding her close and burying his head in her neck breathing her in.
After a long moment of holding him, breathing him in, running her fingers through his hair, she finally pulled back and climbed away. She had to force herself away. “I’ll see you soon.”
“Very soon” Haymitch insisted forcing himself to let her go. Though his heart was heavier than it had been.
